Long Weekend Random Thoughts

Man what a long weekend it has been.  Thursday rocked because mom went over the top with the food she prepared (you can NEVER top anything mom cooks, right?), Friday was great because I didn't have to work and I put up all my Christmas decorations, Saturday kicked ass because Georgia beat Georgia Tech in one of the most exciting games I've watched all season, and Sunday...yes Atlanta stunk up the place, but I diverted my energy into band stuff.  Trust me, I could go on for HOURS about why Atlanta sucks right now but I won't.  However, one thing I do want to mention is racism.  While I was watching the Fox pre-game show, there was a story on minority coaches and the requirement the NFL has about interviewing minorities for head coaching jobs.  It REALLY pissed me off.  Ok, over the years I have known some people who make racial slurs or whatever, but when it comes to football I think even the most racist person forgets skin color and only wants their team to win.  For anyone to make race a story when it comes to coaches is horrible because just like most "news" on TV does, all they do is try and promote an idea that everyone's a racist and not try to move past it.  Let's see, we have a few black coaches in the NFL - Art Shell, Herman Edwards, Marvin Lewis, Lovie Smith, Dennis Green, Tony Dungy, and Romeo Crennel.  This story on Fox was just making me mad, because the woman (I should know her name but I forget since she's not Bonnie Bernstein or Suzy Kolber) who was talking to the president of the Bears asked why is Lovie Smith the lowest paid coach in the league.  I swear...let's grasp at a few more straws, huh?  The Chicago Bears are NOTORIOUS for being tight with money.  Football is one area where people don't give a crap about race if they're fans...all they want to see is a win.  I truly think pro football has moved WAY past the need for any kind of bs affirmative action plan.  Teams want to win and will bring in the person they think can best help them.  Seriously, should I start a movement to make sure teams try to sign a white dude to play cornerback?  Remember the last starting white cornerback in the NFL?  I'll let you ponder that one and reveal it next time.  I'm so sick of race being an issue when I truly believe the majority of people don't even think about it.  Yes, races are different and people will ALWAYS view people of another race differently.  Does this mean they hate them or think bad about them?  No, it doesn't...they just view them as someone of a different race.  And don't you love it when people take that high road of "oh I never look at the color of someone's skin".  That is such a load of crap.  Everyone does.  In no way does it mean that you look down on someone who is of a different race, but in your mind you do recognize the person is of another race and there is nothing wrong with that.  So what if I hang out with a black dude or a latin dude or a middle-east dude...I'm not going to act surprised if someone points out their race.  "Oh this guy is black???  Wow...I never noticed..."   What a load of crap.  People who act surprised when race is pointed out are trying WAY too hard to act so above it all.  Yes, there are people who are different and there is nothing wrong with recognizing it.  This doesn't mean it's ok to hate people who are different, but just because you do see someone as different does not mean you're a racist.  I wouldn't give a crap if some dude from China coached Atlanta to a Super Bowl win, I just want them to win.  Yes, the "hate-monger bigot" part of me would recognize the coach was Chinese, but I wouldn't care.  Racism won't start to go away until people quit whining about it and making it an issue.

And now some band stuff.  The band I'm in, NoiseCult as if you didn't know, have a KILLER gig on December the 8th.  The show will be at The Rutledge off of 4th Avenue.  Oh man, this place rocks.  I met Don there one night after work last week to check it out and it is awesome.  It's a real stage with lots of monitors and a semi-drum riser.  I have a pretty good feeling this show will kick some ass.  Plus, it's going to benefit the Toys for Tots program, so it's all for a good cause.  Also, our website at www.noisecult.com has 4 new videos on it that were recorded at The Muse a couple of months ago so check them out.

Just a couple of weeks until "Rocky Balboa" and I can't wait.  Any guy who claims to be a man and doesn't like Rocky movies isn't a man at all.  Rocky is the type of character all guys should secretly want to be...a guy who fights on pure heart and determination.  I still get goosebumps when I watch "Rocky II" as the final round is about to start.  Apollo and Rocky meet in the middle of the ring and Apollo says "you're going down" and Rocky answers with "uh-uh...no way".  It's moments like that in life I crave...me against insurmountable odds and not giving up.  Those are the moments in life I cherish...when everything is on the line.  I wish I had more of those because it's times like that you truly feel like you're living...you know what I mean?  Wow...this could really get me started on a completely different area.  Ok, I'm a control freak, I'll admit it.  I hate having anything I do based on what someone else decides.  I guess that's why I prefer my own company.  Now I will say I have a couple of friends that are like brothers to me, and while we may not always see things the same way, it doesn't matter.  So where am I going with this?  Ok, a few nights ago I went out to dinner with a girl I knew about 16 years ago.  She saw I was running for the Senate and emailed me.  Me and her worked together for a while and were pretty close for some time...but as time goes you lose touch...it happens.  Anyway, I met her and her husband and two kids for dinner.  She asked me how in the heck I was still single.  I told her that I meet nothing but flakes.  I kind of glossed it over because we hadn't talked in years and I didn't want this to turn into a night of me whining...hahaha.  What i'm trying to say is that I can't stand getting close to someone who tries to be something they aren't...this means guy friends, dating, whatever.  I have learned that whatever we try to hide comes out eventually, so why hide it?  I can deal with and overlook a lot of stuff as long as I'm not lied to about it beforehand.  But I'll stop there.  Anyway, I know why I like the Rocky movies so much...Rocky was always so bluntly honest while going after what drove him and gave him purpose.  I can't wait to see this new Rocky movie, I don't care how old Stallone is.

More to come....it's bedtime Sportsfans and Vick and Jessi need their dinner.
