Prelude:
August 14th, 08:55, Outside the village of Kravana, Kolgujev
Today started out as any normal day. I never for once thought that an evil demon would invade our island. And it couldn't have happened at a worse time. We were already trying to recover from the crippling civil war that had ended only 6 months ago.
I was sitting with some of my friends near my small town, Kravana. I was to drive to Jeronva to pick up some supplies.
I arrived at Jeronva at about 9:00. I loaded some food, water and so forth into my car and drove off again. On the way back, I felt uneasy. I felt that something wasn't right. Strange...
Shrugging it off, I carried on driving.
August 14th, 09:10, Kravana, Kolgujev
I arrived at Kravana and we unloaded the supplies. We would start rebuilding the damaged towns today. And I mean we would start if it wasn't for a massive coastal arrival.
The Invasion Begins:
August 14th, 13:00, Kravana, Kolgujev
Kolgujev was overrun with soldiers. They were killing anyone who resisted them. A few of my friends and me managed to escape into the forests with some weapons. We grabbed a truck and loaded it up with some weapons, ammo (5 AK74s, 9 AK74 Magazines, 3 RPG-Nh75 Launchers and 5 RPGs) and some old combat uniforms.
As we drove the truck to the cover of the trees, I noticed that the sky was beginning to cloud over very quickly. In the few minutes it took to get from Kravana to the forest, a thunderstorm had developed.
August 14th, 14:35, Somewhere in the Kolgujevan Forests, Kolgujev
There was no other choice. We had to fight them. Most of the others that escaped with me objected this.
"Are you insane?!" asked a guy called Ivan, "We've got no chance against those Russians!"
"We at least have to try!" I retorted.
"Try? Try?! What the hell can we do? We've only got a couple of AK74s and some RPGs left over. What do they have? Goddamn tanks and helicopters! Not to mention a s**tload of troops!"
"So? We can call in help from the other islands, can't we? Anisim, hand me that radio."
"RRadio, Borislav?" stuttered Anisim.
"Yes, the radio I told you to bring with us!"
"Erm... well there's a slight problem with that..."
"Anis...!"
He had forgotten the radio, the gibbering fool.
"...So we're on our own..." I said.
We changed into the combat uniforms and had a meal.
August 14th, 16:20, Forests, Kolgujev
The first order of business was to locate any of the bases the invaders had occupied.
We agreed to set up camp in the forests. I had sent two men out (armed with AK74s) to scout the area to a radius of approximately 1 mile. While they were doing that, I assigned Ivan and Anisim to set up a camp area while I kept watch from the trees.
During my watch, a couple of soldiers walked by, talking about vodka.
"Do you think we'll get any vodka tonight?"
"I think so, comrade. If not, we could always sneak some out."
"Heh heh. Nice plan."
"What plan? I haven't made one up yet."
"Oh, er...right."
"Sometimes I wonder about you, Arkady..."
They walked along without incident. The rest of the watch was uneventful apart from a few vehicles occasionally passing by. After about an hour or so, I got a radio message from our camp. The two I had sent out to scout had returned. Before I went back to camp, I went for a piss. I was bursting!
August 14th, 17:35, Forest camp, Kolgujev
"So, Borislav, what do you suggest we do now?" asked Ivan.
"We fight!" I answered.
"...Er... isn't that a bit risky?"
"Yes, I agree it's a tad bit risky, considering there's only six of us."
"Boris, has anyone told you that you are one crazy asshole?"
"Yes, on many occasions."
"...Why attack them?"
"Because the game will get boring if we don't..."
"I suppose so..."
August 14th, 17:45, Forest Edge, Kolgujev
We attacked any patrols that showed themselves. We continued this for a while until it became too dark to see anything, then returned to camp.
August 15th, 10:30, Forest camp, Kolgujev
We laid low while the Russians continued to take over Kolgujev. There were too many of them and too few of us. Also, we were apparently the only resistance on Kolgujev. There were probably others, but we didn't want to risk searching for them.
We woke up and ate a small breakfast. We would decide what to do later. However, halfway through our meal, we were ambushed by a group of Spetz Natz. Without warning, they beat us unconscious (which I thought was pretty much un-called for!).
August 15th, 12:15, Somewhere, Kolgujev
I awoke face down in a small building. The others were nowhere around. I quickly got up from the floor because it was dusty and I didn't want to stain my clothes. Looking around, I noticed I was back in Jeronva. Soviets could be heard and seen everywhere and the weather was still stormy.
I exited the building and was stopped by a Russian soldier.
"Ah, so you are awake, comrade!"
I didn't reply. The Russian gave a lopsided grin.
"Our commander wishes to speak to you. He is standing over there."
He motioned over to an officer. Near him were 5 prisoners. I immediately knew it was my five companions (they had the old uniforms on, remember?). Five Spetz Natz were aiming their weapons at them.
I walked over to the officer and saw his nametag. It read: 'Colonel William Young'.
"Why hello there! It's nice to see you!" he spoke cheerfully with a lisp, "I have your friends here. Now, my General has a proposition for you. It will let you live if you join us."
I angrily stared at him.
"Very well. Captain," he spoke to one of the Spetz Natz Leader.
The Spetz Natz leader spoke to one of the Spetz Natz and he opened fire, immediately killing Marek, one of Ivan's friends.
"Oh, God!!" cried one of the other captives.
"You'll shut up, if you know what's good for you!" the Spetz Natz standing in front of him said.
"Well, I do know what's good for me. So, what do I do? Do I say what's good for me then shut up, or let you assume that I know what's good for me and just shut up without you telling me to give you a list of things?"
This caught everyone quite off-guard. The Spetz Natz's brow furrowed as he tried to make sense of what the prisoner said.
"Er...just...shut up, comrade..." the Spetz Natz said, uneasily.
Colonel Young moistened his lips and turned back to me, "Uh... so anyway. Join us or we will kill you."
I couldn't let them kill any more of my colleagues... I had to give in. But before I could say anything (this kind of luck always finds me, somehow), Anisim made a mad dash for it. The other three ran for it also, but were soon gunned down.
"NO! YOU DASTARDS!"
Colonel Young unslung his Kalishnakov and pointed it at me. The Spetz Natz executioners were also pointing their weapons at me. I was in a no-win situation. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.
"...I give up. You win. I guess I'll join you..."
"A wise decision, Captain!" said the Colonel as he slung his rifle onto his back again.
August 15th, 15:00, Jeronva, Kolgujev
I changed into the Russian uniform they had given me. It was smelly, and it itched! I changed in the same building that I had awoken in. As I was stepping outside, a Hind landed in the middle of the camp. It dropped off some passengers then continued on its way. As it was unloading its cargo, I had a great urge to shoot the pilots, nick the chopper and open some whoop-ass on their candy-asses! But I knew I'd be shot before I got off the ground. And in the slim chance that I'd get off the ground, I knew they would definitely have some AA units ready for me, so I just glumly watched as the chopper flew off into the distance.
Nothing much happened for a few days. Just more of the same. Training exercises all day, hardly ceasing.
August 18th, 19:50, Prenchy, Kolgujev
I was assigned patrol duty that night, which translated into: walking around an empty, dead town doing fudge all.
Some time later, a BMP rolled into town. I was ordered into the back of it along with the rest of my squad. We were taking a trip to the western shore base.
August 18th, 22:00, Western base, Kolgujev
We hopped out of the BMP and hopped to the base. There were some trucks there, so a few of us hopped into them until our squad leader told us to stop hopping. A couple of guys playing hopscotch abruptly stopped and began patrolling again. I hopped...er...got into a fuel truck and waited for my orders.
They finally came. I was to drive the truck to a military base a short distance from Preska, a town far to the east of my position. There I was to fill up a few UAZs - since the fuel station there was very short of fuel - and then spend the rest of the night there.
August 18th, 22:20, Military compound, Kolgujev
I was relieved to finally get to my destination. An officer ran to the truck and shouted over the heavy rain. I could just make out him telling me to fill up their jeeps and something about being out of doughnuts.
I parked the Fuel Truck next to a UAZ and filled it up. As soon as I had refuelled the jeep, a soldier ran over to the officer reporting a report about a reported spy who was reported to be on the island, reportedly.
"Sir! I've to report to you about a reported spy who is reported to be on the island, reportedly."
"...Eh?"
"Er...there's a spy on the island, somewhere. He was last reported to be near the western shore base."
That's where I've just come from!
"Really? What has the leader said to do?"
"Well, nothing really. It just told me to tell you that."
"I'm going to see Lord Gareth about this. You're in charge here."
"Yes sir."
Lord Gareth? What the hell?
The officer hopped in a fuelled UAZ and drove towards the western shore base.
I filled up the other 3 UAZs and found a place to sleep for the night.
August 19th, 12:00, somewhere on Kolgujev
Colonel Young awakened me.
"Lord Gareth has told us to prepare for an attack."
An attack? Well, it's about time I saw some action!
August 19th, 19:30, Eastern shore of Kolgujev
A couple of M113s landed on the east shore. However, we managed to fight them off. There was apparently also a fight over on the Western shore base, but our tanks seem to have scared them off...
August 20th, 15:25, One of the central bases, Kolgujev
Once more, Colonel Young called me up.
"Alright, Captain. Our Lord has read your report and it's had its doubts (RED HAMMER RIP-OFF!), but it has decided to put you into Spetz Natz for reasons known only to the mission author..."
Spetz Natz? I'd never been in the Spetz Natz before, but what the hell.
"Okay, sir. So, what do I do?"
"Your first mission is to sneak onto Malden unnoticed and spy on several officers. Try not to kill anyone. Only kill if you have to. We'll be watching you with a satellite, so don't be a silly-head and not follow orders."
"Um...okay..."
I was transported to the Spetz Natz camp. It's on the western shore.
August 20th, 15:30, Spetz Natz camp, Kolgujev
An entire camp full of Spetz Natz is quite intimidating. Aside from Spetz Natz there were some regular grunts walking about. I jumped out the Ural and entered the camp. They were readying the boat for me. After a short while, I got into the boat and was on my way to Malden.
August 20th, 16:50, Northern shore of Malden
I crept off the boat and onto the shore. I avoided patrols and wandering soldiers as I made my way to my first objective. One Major Fred Ingles. He was meeting with someone called Colonel David Blake.
I managed to sneak in behind the house and listened in through the window...
"Colonel Blake."
"Major Ingles."
There was a sound of fabric moving. I guess they must have been saluting.
"What are we doing about the desert outpost situation?"
Desert outpost?
"Don't worry... we're sending Lieutenant Alex Player to eliminate it."
Lieutenant Player... He's the third officer I've to spy on.
"Are you sure he can do it?"
"Yes, I'm sure. He's more than capable enough."
"Anyway, sir. What are we going to do about Kolgujev?"
At this, I listened intently.
"We have to launch an attack at some point. An overwhelming attack."
"How will we execute it? We'll need to move in everything if we're going to have any chance of winning."
"That is exactly the strategy we're going to employ, Major."
"I think we should wait until our army is a little stronger before we do any attacking."
"I'm talking with the other officers about the plan. We'll all meet somewhere and discuss the plans there."
Blast! How are we going to defend if we don't know what they're going to do?
I heard Blake leave. He got into his jeep and drove off. I silently snuck out of the town and took shelter in a forest nearby.
August 21st, 18:30, Near La Trinite, Malden
The next important officer on my list was Captain Joseph Green. He was situated in La Trinite. Our intelligence shows that Colonel Blake will be talking to him today. And tomorrow, my last officer, Lieutenant Player.
La Trinite was a lot harder to get into. It was bigger than the last town I entered the day before. Since it was bigger, there were more soldiers faffing about. There was even an M60 that occasionally rolled by the town.
However, I managed to eavesdrop on their conversation. It was pretty much the same as before.
There was a patrol between me and my forest hiding spot. After getting past them, I set up camp for the night ahead.
August 22nd, 18:25, Near Lake Jerry, Malden
I was nearing my final objective. I was planning to watch him from on top of a cliff that overshadowed some of the camp, but there were two flaws to that location:
1) When I scouted it out earlier, I couldn't make out any of the camp and
2) I wouldn't be able to hear anything...
So, after I had ruled that location out, I found some shrubbery to hide in that was near the camp. I nestled myself in it and could just make out what they were saying. On my way to the hiding spot, I noticed the amount of soldiers and armour. I have to admit, it was an impressive array. And this was just on one part of the island! Imagine how much is on the entire island!
After Lieutenant Player had finished talking, he got into a Jeep and drove to a camp further down the road. After a while, a Chinook came to pick him up. I watched it fly off into the distance.
"Home Base, this is Alpha. Home Base, this is Alpha. Come in, over."
"This is Home Base. Status, Captain."
"I have spotted all three officers. Over."
"Well done, Alpha. We will pick you up on an inlet at Fc77."
"Roger that. Out."
Fc77. I checked my map... I had a long way to go...
I made my way to the co-ordinates while admiring the warm rays of the sun and the beautiful sunset. Things that are now just memories on Kolgujev.
At the inlet, I saw the boat already waiting for me. I got onboard and it sped off, back to Kolgujev...
August 23rd, 10:20, Central base in Kolgujev
It was practically as soon as I got back that I was told that we were attempting to hold Everon. Well, at least I don't have to spend a lot of time on this dreary island now.
August 23rd, 13:00, Outside of Laruns, Everon
The NATO soldiers had complete control of Everon's airspace only a day or so after they arrived. Slick bastards.
Anyway, my unit and me ran off to Laruns. This small village held several soldiers. Simple orders. Go in with 3 other Spetz Natz and cleanse the village of enemy presence, including any vehicles there.
This mission caught us a little off-guard, since, after we finished dealing with the soldiers in the village, a group of 3 Day Black Ops burst out from a nearby forest. It was murder trying to get rid of them! However, we did (obviously! Otherwise, I wouldn't be writing this, now would I?). I planted a satchel charge next to each vehicle (a Jeep, a 5t Truck and an HMMWV). Once I had retreated to a safe distance, I touched off the 3 satchels and blew the village to Kingdom Come, wherever the hell that might be. We retreated into the forest we had emerged from.
August 23rd, 13:15, On way to boot camp outside of Levie, Everon
I was on my way back to base with a small group of Spetz Natz, when suddenly, I saw a group of 6 West soldiers coming our way. There was no time to hide, they had seen us, and so we had no choice but to fight.
It was hard, yes, but we prevailed.
August 23rd, 13:25, Still on way back to boot camp, Everon
I ordered the rest of my squad to run on ahead; I had seen one of the enemy's ammo dumps. Being the brave idiot I am, I decided to destroy as much of their ammunition as I could... alone.
August 23rd, 13:30, Enemy ammo dump
I stealthily made my way to the small group of houses. I looked over the village with my binoculars. To the left there were some ammo crates. I couldn't see them at the time because of a few trees, but there were also some ammo crates on the right. There were a few guards and a vehicle would pass through every so often, as well as the helicopters overhead. I crept closer and took out the patrolling guards. I hid the bodies and made my way to the ammo crates. It was then I remembered I had used up all my satchel charges I searched the ammo crates for something. I found 1 satchel. That would only take care of one of the piles. I looked around and noticed one of the soldiers I had killed had a LAW Launcher. I took the LAW, planted a satchel between one of the piles of ammunition and blew it. Then I took aim with the LAW and blasted the other boxes. The deed - which nobody asked me to do - was done and I once again made off towards the boot camp, wondering if I would ever get there.
August 23rd, 13:35, Boot camp outside of Levie, Everon
Colonel Young was said to be the one in charge in the boot camp, but he wasn't there when I arrived. He was probably at Levie. I asked around and found out that he wasn't there because he was trying to escape.
"Escape?" I asked the soldier who was second in charge.
"Yes."
"But why?"
"He was found trying to send messages to the enemy."
"Well that's just wrong!"
"I know. Lord Gareth has ordered us to hunt down and kill him."
"Will do."
I set out with a mixed group. I had a Spetz Natz, a medic and two regular infantry soldiers.
August 23rd, 14:00, somewhere on Everon
We eventually found Colonel Young skulking about one of the towns on the north part of the island.
"Colonel Young!" I shouted.
"Oh, er hi, Captain Maksim. You aren't here to kill me by any chance, are you?"
"Yes. Yes we are."
"Well darn."
"All, fire at Will..."
Everyone started laughing. It was then that I realised what I had said and I started laughing, myself. I looked up at Colonel Young and he was starting to pull his gun off his back, also laughing at the joke, but I loosed a few rounds of lead into him and he fell to the ground, dead. It felt good, somehow. I had just killed a superior officer... and it felt good! I left the body where it lay and returned to base.
August 23rd, 14:25, Boot camp outside of Levie, Everon
Well, hell. A lot of things went on that day! At least I got to rest after I arrived...
A short while later, a UAZ drove into the base carrying Colonel Young's replacement. I looked over with curiosity. I jumped slightly when I saw the replacement. On his head was... some sort of... dead raccoon? No wait, that's his hair.
He was Colonel William Brown. Another Will! A lot of the guys were suspicious, but we found out that Colonel Brown (who was later nicknamed 'The Hair') was just a normal guy who got taken over by a parasitical hair (which is another story) and hates computer games. Strange, since he is starring in one!
I retired to a camp to finally sleep.
August 24th, 13:30, Lamentin, Everon
I was awoken at 12:00. Apparently, the Americans are winning the battle for Everon. We'll have to pull out, soon.
Dammit! We've practically only just arrived here and already we're being kicked off! Our biggest loss was Lamentin, which we had lost at around 10:00 that morning. It had most of our soldiers there.
I was told to check it out (it's always mepunishment for resisting them, I suppose).
I arrived there at about 13:30. I hid in some bushes to observe what was going on...
I saw Colonel Blake standing outside a small house. Not that long later, another officer came waltzing up to him... it was Lieutenant Player again!
I listened in on their conversation. They were going to be attacking Kolgujev next! Those slippery little bastards...!
I snuck out of Lamentin and reported back. We would have to act fast; they would be attacking tomorrow.
August 25th, 08:00 Central base, Kolgujev
Okay, this is it! They're coming for us full-force. I don't think we'll be able to hold them.
This morning, I had a shock. The so-called 'Lord Gareth' made an appearance. By God! It had one hell of an ugly mug! Sickeningly ugly...
It told us our orders and went off, saying it needed to powder it's nose then change for the battle.
Strange...
August 25th, 16:45, Spetz Natz camp, Kolgujev
Reports said that LSTs, choppers and all sorts of other military hardware were making straight for Kolgujev from all sides!
We readied ourselves for the attack.
August 25th, 16:55, Spetz Natz camp, Kolgujev
Some of us were transported to other parts of the island. Very last minute, since I could already see the massive shadows of the LSTs through the fog.
I was one of those transported.
August 25th, 17:10, somewhere on Kolgujev
The fighting had got increasingly worse during our transport. By the time we had arrived at our destination, it sounded like the freakin' apocalypse!
We all managed to hold our ground during the mini-war, but casualties were inevitable. And although we were dropping them left and right, the bastards were steadily defeating us.
Lord Gareth... Gareth Gaytes... the useless piece of worthless crap didn't do anything to help us.
Eventually, a few others and me managed to escape.
August 25th, 17:40, Kolgujevan wilderness
It was pure luck that we managed to survive the patrols and the battle, which had quietened down to a bearable level. Instead of fighting, we decided to just sleep in the forests. If we get captured, so what? We'll be better off than in this hellhole, under the command of a gay, ugly, teenage, demonic, stupid, ugly, smelly, disgusting, putrid, ugly, disturbing, ugly thing!
August 26th, 00:10, Kolgujevan wilderness
I awoke with a start. I had heard a massive explosion somewhere. A few minutes later, I felt something... it was as if a veil had been lifted from my mind.
I had been serving a crappy pop star? Can't be! But, sure enough, there we were... all in Russian uniforms. We had been fighting against NATO forces? Will Young was my commanding officer? What the hell?
The others were waking, too.
After a while, we all talked about what had happened. It was while we were talking that we noticed something... the weather had cleared up. There was no more rain. No more thunder. No more stormy weather. It was peaceful again.
August 26th, 06:50, Kravana, Kolgujev
We found out that Gareth Gaytes was dead. I had thought as much. Now we could get on with our lives once more. We all had a drink around a fire and felt at ease.
Epilogue: October 31st, 10:15, Kravana, Kolgujev One year later...
It was while I was loading a truck to Jeronva that I heard screams from far away. I whirled around and almost crapped myself! Coming towards Kravana was a large group of Russian troops being lead by... by... some sort of cyborg!
I realised it was Gareth! That thing was Gareth Gaytes! It rushed into my town and the killing started all over again. But this time, it was all the more brutal. I had no chance of escape.
The cyborg approached me. I was cornered. It pointed its weapon at me and fired. My chest felt like it was on fire. I fell to the ground. Just as blackness overcame me, I heard Gareth say:
"PREPARE FOR THE INVASION OF NOGOVA!"
Then I died.
