INNATE PSYKERS

Gaining Innate Psyker Levels

Anyone can cast innate psychic powers so long as they gain some Innate Psyker Levels. Over the course of the 20 normal levels a character can gain up to a maximum of 20 Innate Psyker levels.

In d20-40k the only thing that determines your prowess with innate powers is your current innate psyker level. There are 4 places that one can collect Innate Psyker levels.

1.) The Charismatic Hero Innate Power Talent Tree.

2.) The feats: Innate Gift & Innate Mastery

3.) The Witch / Warlock advanced class.

4.) The Arch-Psyker prestige class.

So how does one become a Level 20 innate psyker?

There is basically only one way to become a Level 20 innate psyker. The method is outlined in the chart below. The order in which the classes are taken do not have to be identical, but the makeup of the classes does.

Psychic Powers

An innate psyker casts psychic powers which are drawn from the arcane/innate psychic power list. An innate psyker does not have to choose and prepare her psychic powers ahead of time but can cast any psychic power she knows ‘on the fly’.

To learn, prepare, or cast a psychic power, the innate psyker must have a Charisma score equal to at least 10 + the psychic power level. The Difficulty Class for a saving throw against an innate psyker’s psychic power is 10 + the psychic power level + the innate psyker’s Charisma modifier.

Like other psykers, an innate psyker can cast only a certain number of psychic powers of each psychic power level per day. Her base daily psychic power allotment is given on the Table: Innate Psychic powers per Day. In addition, she receives bonus psychic powers per day if she has a high Charisma score.

An innate psyker begins play knowing four 0-level powers and two 1st-level powers of your choice. At each new innate psyker level, he gains one or more new psychic powers, as indicated on Table: Innate Psyker Psychic powers Known. (Unlike psychic powers per day, the number of psychic powers an innate psyker knows is not affected by his Charisma score; the numbers on Table: Innate Psyker Psychic powers Known are fixed.) These new psychic powers can be common psychic powers chosen from the innate psyker/wizard psychic power list, or they can be unusual psychic powers that the innate psyker has gained some understanding of by study. The innate psyker can’t use this method of psychic power acquisition to learn psychic powers at a faster rate, however.

Upon reaching an Innate Psyker Level of 4, and at every even-numbered innate psyker level after that (6th, 8th, and so on), an innate psyker can choose to learn a new psychic power in place of one he already knows. In effect, the innate psyker “loses” the old psychic power in exchange for the new one. The new psychic power’s level must be the same as that of the psychic power being exchanged, and it must be at least two levels lower than the highest-level innate psyker psychic power the innate psyker can cast. An innate psyker may swap only a single psychic power at any given level, and must choose whether or not to swap the psychic power at the same time that he gains new psychic powers known for the level.

Bonus Psychic powers

Innate psykers with a particularly high Charisma score can cast additional psychic powers per day. The innate psyker uses the same table that the arcane psyker uses for bonus powers (see arcane psyker above).

Scrolls and Psychic Tomes

An Innate Psyker can cast arcane/innate psychic powers he finds in scrolls and psychic tomes. To do so he must follow the rules for How to Read Arcane Powers in the arcane psyker section above.

Brain Engrams

A brain engram is a psychic storage cybernetic placed in the brain. In the case of the innate psyker it allows the psyker to know an additional psychic power at a maximum level of three lower than his highest level power known. For instance an innate psyker with an innate psyker level of 6 can know 1 extra level 0 psychic power. One with an innate psyker level of 18 can learn an extra level 6 psychic power. In addition to the normal cybernetic rules an innate psyker can never carry more than 4 brain engrams.
