Lightweight Racing Battery for WRX
The Battery: Powersonic PS-12180, This is a lightweight (13 lb.) battery that has high cranking output and can easily start the Subaru. We have used this battery for up to 2 weeks at a time but the manufacture does not recommend it as a permanent installation. (We will be using it for autocross and drags).
Parts for battery hold down: Two 6" "J" bolts, nuts, washers and lock washers for "J" bolts, .75 "wide, .065" thick aluminum strip (in annealed condition), .75" square aluminum tubing, primer and black paint. Parts for battery terminal post: Two threaded lead posts, Brass strip .75", .065 thick, 2 bolts, washers, lock washers for posts, 2 bolts washers and lock washers for bent brass angles.
Terminal Posts: Cut brass strips to 2." length. Drill holes for bolts in brass strips, leave adequate edge distance. Bend brass strips to 90 degrees. Install brass strips on battery terminal along with lead posts. This is a tight fit and requires a bit of manipulation to get it correct.
Lower Mount: The lower mount must be made of annealed material or it will crack when bent this much. Bend the lower part in stages, up 90, down 180, up 90, up 90, down 180, up 90, Drill holes for "J" bolts, 5 7/8" center to center.
Upper Mount: Measure and cut the 45-Degree cuts on each end of square tubing. Drill holes for "J" bolts 5 7/8" center to center.
Paint: Clean parts thoroughly with soap and water, prime then paint.
Installation: The key to installation of the racing battery is the forward "J" bolt will use an alternate existing extra hole in the sheet metal of the battery shelf. This hole is located about "1" rearward of the normal hole. Depending on the type of "J" bolt used, the one going in this new hole must have the "J" opened up a bit to fit in hole.
Remove the old heavy as an anchor battery. Thread the "J" bolts through the lower mount holes and hook the ends in the shelf holes. Set racing battery on shelf. Thread the "J" bolts through the upper mount. Center everything up then install the nuts and washers on "J" bolts. Connect wire terminal ends to the battery posts.
Inspect installation, start car, go racing. |
