Harpers Ferry

February 20, 2002

Cover up and get out of the water cause the New Deal is coming to take a warm bath in the proverbial hot tub which is America. This Canadian trio has set up a program that will astonish, please and even taint you. The frenzy that surrounds this band is all due to the fact that these guys are really talented. The band describes their music as Live Progressive Breakbeat House (I describe it as really fuckin good). During the set at anytime I could have closed my eyes and would have pictures myself in huge dance club with a DJ spinning records up in a booth somewhere. You may never want to see a guy with turntables after witnessing what can be done with keyboards, drums and a bass. The New Deals talent is an enormous part of the enjoyment, to see Daren the drummer pumping out beats at up to 180 bpm is a great spectacle as well as their ability to give the crowd what they need.

Upon arriving at Harpers Ferry most of us were intoxicated by the possible Olympic carnage of what was on the televisions around the bar. This event in Salt Lake City was no more than a bunch of punks getting thrown headfirst down the luge/bobsled flume on laundry baskets. Nevertheless, we were all anxiously waiting to see our favorite live progressive breakbeat house band. By the time the New Deal took the stage the place was packed with everyone from the b-boys that were there to break some new moves to the fellas around the walls that just wanted to enjoy their herbs and relax to some chill music. It was the kind of show where just about everyone had a smile on their face.

The New Deal claims to play better onstage than in the studio because they can respond to the audience and feed off of them. As a result they have purchased a serious recording rig that they take to all of their shows to record their sets. Then they will merge their live recordings with their hours of studio recordings. They have a single EP and full-length album released on Jive Electro recorded using this method. The recording rig was present at the Harpers Ferry show so hopefully we will all soon be able to listen to the set online at their website.
