Live at the Middle East

Aberdeen is a Boston band with little exposure as of now but has what it takes to gain broad recognition in the coming years. Boston doesnt ordinarily get to see very many original local bands that will take chances with untraditional instrumentation and emotional emphasis with good writing to back it all up. Aberdeen does just that partially through, singer, Brad Parkers combination of talents as a vocalist and guitar player and his abilities on both the violin and the mandolin to produce music that feels really good to listen to. His voice is reminiscent of Thom Yorke of Radiohead and creates a very produced illusion by using two mics onstage, one with an echoed effect and the other clean. The band is tight but still loose enough to let out their true emotions within the song.

The few recordings that are available on their website sound good but, like most recordings of quality songs, dont compare to seeing them performed live and being able to see how much each note effects the band members. Parker announced to the crowd that they would be all over the place soon, and I dont doubt it. They finished the set with a cover of an old song done most famously by Frank Sinatra written by Ervin M. Drake called It Was a Very Good Year. Their version of this song used the violin and heavy beat which was very effective in engaging the crowd and leaving us all wanting more.

This band has already surpassed all expectations and preconceptions I had. Aberdeen could have an extremely bright future with their great musical content and very good stage presence. Their talent as consistent writers along with touring could be what they need to build a fan-base that I have recently become a part of.
