In The Pedigree

Unbridled

His sire, the late Unbridled, won both the Kentucky Derby and the Breeders' Cup Classic. In his relatively short career at stud, he had established himself as one of the leading sires in the world. Some of his well known progency are:
-Banshee Breeze a Champion Three-Year-Old Filly of 1998 with earnings of about $2,784,798.
-Empire Maker with earnings of nearly 2.0 million who also won the Belmont Stakes and second in the kentucky Derby.
-Grindstone who won the Kentucky Derby and Louisiana Derby. His Son Birdstone who grabbed the headlines in the Belmont Stakes
-Unshaded a gelding with earning of $1,318,492 he came first in the Travers and also thrid at belmont.
-Manistique who ran 15 Starts and winning 11 and earnt $1,311,800.
-Unbridleds Song a lovely grey who won the Won Breeders' Cup Juvenile and also Wood Memorial and earnt $1,311,800. Unbridled's Song has sired a Breeders' Cup winner from his first crop.As a commercial sire, Unbridled's Song has been nothing short of sensational. In 2001, yearlings by Unbridled's Song sold for up to $1.9 million.
So also among these Grade 1 winners and Kentucky Derby winner and two Breeders' Cup winners where other horses were numerous Grade 1 winners.

Fappiano

Occasionally something appears bearing the mark of future greatness and then is taken away before the promise is fulfilled. One such shining light was the stallion Fappiano, a 1977 son of Brilliant/Classic chef-de-race Mr. Prospector out of Killaloe, by Dr. Fager. He died at age thirteen. His Grade 1 level winners include Aptostar, Cahill Road, Cryptoclearance, Defensive Play, Grand Canyon, Quiet American, Rubiano, Serape, Some Romance, Tappiano, Tasso, and Unbridled. Fappianos lifetime Average-Earnings Index (AEI) is an exceptional 4.52, measured against a Comparable Index of 3.02. Two of his sons Grindstone and Unbridled, both with just their fourth crop currently racing, have emerged as major sires. Several other sons, including Cryptoclearance, Pentelicus, Cahill Road, Fappavalley, Rubiano, and Defensive Play also have demonstrated the ability to sire high quality runners.Fappianos record as a broodmare sire is equally impressive. Fappianos AEI as a broodmare sire is an excellent 2.29, with a Comparable Index of 2.08.To put his stud record in perspective, Fappianos sire statistics placed him tenth in my ranking among all sires of North American runners with at least fifty lifetime foals of racing age through 1997. Thats good enough to position him between Pleasant Colony and Seattle Slew. On the broodmare sire side, he ranked fourteenth, between Hail to Reason and Round Table. Here his daughters have produced 83% open stakes winners at a mile or less. Certainly this level of performance places him among the premier sires of his generation.

Mr. Prospector

Mr. Prospector (1970-1999) was a thoroughbred racehorse who won half of his 14 career starts, but whose descendants have come to dominate the United States Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing.Mr. Prospector managed to set track records for six furlongs (1,207 m) at Gulfstream Park and Garden State, but his racing record had little inkling of his success as a breeding sire.
One of Mr. P's most remarkable feats was siring one winner of each of the Triple Crown races, a feat his grandson, Unbridled, has also accomplished. His Triple Crown race winners were the 2000 Kentucky Derby winner Fusaichi Pegasus, a promising young sire; 1985 Preakness Stakes winner Tank's Prospect; and 1982 Belmont Stakes winner and Horse of the Year, Conquistador Cielo.

Storm Cat

Storm Cat is one of the most influential stallions in the history of the breed and North Americas top stallion. He is the sire of over 125 stakes winners worldwide and his sons and daughters are proving to be excellent producers as well. At least 39 different sons of Storm Cat have sired stakes winners and his daughters have thrown the likes of Speightstown, Sky Mesa, Buddha, Sahara Gold and Jump Start. In 2004, Storm Cat has sired two G1-winners, Consolidator and Sweet Catomine. Not surprisingly offspring of Storm Cat are in high demand at public auction. At the 2004 Keeneland September sale a yearling Storm Cat colt brought a final bid of $8 million. That figure is the highest ever for a September yearling and Storm Cat has now sired the more $1 million yearlings than any other stallion in history.

Northern Dancer

Northern Dancer was a Canadian-bred thoroughbred racehorse and the most successful sire in racing history.

Northern Dancer was ridden by Ron Turcotte in his first victory as a two-year-old. Before the running of the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland in Lexington, Kentucky, trainer Horatio Luro asked jockey Bill Shoemaker to make a commitment to ride either Northern Dancer or the more promising colt, Hill Rise. Shoemaker went with the unbeaten Hill Rise, believing the colt represented his best chance for a win at the prestigious Kentucky Derby. As a result of Shoemaker's decision, Bill Hartack became Northern Dancer's permanent jockey, guiding him to his best season in 1964 at age 3 when he won the Flamingo Stakes, Florida Derby, Blue Grass Stakes, Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes, and the Queen's Plate. He was also named the Eclipse Award champion 3-year-old of 1964.In his two years of racing, Northern Dancer won 14 of his 18 races and never finished worse than third. Northern Dancer stood at Taylor's stud farm in Maryland until his retirement and was the most successful sire in thoroughbred horse-racing history. His offspring have earned more money and won more major stakes races than those of any other sire. He sired 146 stakes winners He was also an exceptionally prepotent sire (a sire of sires of stakes winners such as Miesque). In the 1983 Keeneland auction, one of Northern Dancer's colts named Snaafi Dancer became the first $10 million yearling.

Although he has been dead for more than fifteen years, there are more Northern Dancer line Breeder's Cup winners than any other horse.
