The Clash were one of the pioneers of British punk rock.  They were very politically driven.  Later in their career they established themselves as one of the greatest bands in rock 'n' roll history, by trying different sounds, such as reggae, rockabilly, gospel, and funk fused together with their punk sound.  Bassist Paul Simonon was the only member of the clash to be in the band from beginning to end  Lead singer Joe Strummer's band that he was in before joining the clash (the 101ers) broke up after seeing the Sex Pistols live.  Unfortunately Joe Strummer died of  a heart attack in 2002.  The Clash were inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame in 2003.
