Ratios
A ratio is a comparison of two numbers. It can be written in several forms.
1 to 3 or 1:3 or 1/3
No matter how it is written it means the same thing. Answers to ratio problems will be fractions in their simplest form and improper fractions will be left as
improper fractions.
Proportions
A proportion is two equal ratios. To solve a proportion cross multiply. Multiply the numerator of one ratio with the denominator of the other and then multiply
the denominator of the first with the numerator of the second. Then divide the number with the variable into the whole number.
Changing Decimal Numbers into Percents
To change a decimal number to a percent, move the decimal point two places to the right and add the percent sign.
Changing Percents into Decimal Numbers
To change a percent to a decimal, move the decimal point two places to the left and remove the percent sign.
Changing Fractions into Percents
To change a fraction to a percent, add a decimal point and two zeros to the numerator then divide the denominator into the numerator. Then change the
decimal number to a percent by moving the decimal point two places to the right.
Changing Percents into Fractions
To change a percent to a fraction place the percentage over 100, then reduce the fraction. Change all improper fractions to mixed numerals.
Changing Fractions into Decimal Numbers
To change a fraction to a decimal number, divide the denominator into the numerator, Add a decimal point and zeros to the numerator until the division comes
out even or the answer starts repeating.
Changing Decimal Numbers into Fractions
To change a decimal number to a fraction, place the decimal number over the place value of the decimal, remove the decimal point, and reduce. Place value of
tenths is 10, hundredths 100 and, thousandths 1,000.
Finding the Percent of a Number
To find a percent of a number, change the percent to a decimal, then multiply the decimal and the number.

Finding What Percent One Number is of Another
To find what percent one number is of another, look at the two numbers as a ratio. Then set the ratio up as a proportion using n/100 to find the percent.
115 is what percent of 250? 115/250 = n/100 250 n = 11500 n = 46%
Finding a Number When a Percent of it is Known
To find a number when a percent is known, place the percent over 100 and remove the decimal point. Place the known number over a variable (use n as the
variable), and solve the proportion for the variable.
