A small rant about Unemployment 28/05/05

The figures for unemployment in Britain are sky high, which our government doesn't like because it gives our country a bad reputation. It overlooks the fact that the job:person ratio is unequal due to the fact our population is inflated. Government officials don't see it would be impossible for everyone to have a job, but it is persistant in forcing everyone out to work, even housewives with children to look after.

So not to appear slack, they try to encourage people out to work in the Job Seeker department, there are plenty of methods it uses, like New Deal for young people. New Deal assumes that these young people are all unskilled and untrained so sets about skilling them up. It is all based on generalisations and assumptions about that particular category of people, and seems to avoid looking at individual cases (such as myself). It also uses subconcious methods based on peer pressure. There is an immense pressure set upon you by fellow citizens when you're are unemployed. You are shunned and called a lay about, and lazy.. There are of course people who abuse the system, but when you see all that it offers for an uneducated unskilled person you can't really blame them.

It's all about statistics really. Rather than get people jobs the job centre will move you onto numerous different initiatives and courses to lower the figures of unemployment. They job centre employees are under pressure to lower these figures so will do anything in their power to keep unemployment low. So next time you hear about the "figures of unemployment being at an all time low" you might stop to think that they're not actually any lower, it's just that the unemployed are claiming disability, or have been put on stupid initiatives such as voluntary work.. where incidentally your taxes are still being used to pay the company the person is working for!

We are born to procreate, and that's what we do - struggle through life. If you get it easy then you're lucky, but those who don't get the help and encouragement that is needed trail behind and become a self fulfulling prophecy, where all they see their life is worth is to bring up some kids on a scummy estate. Why should we be expected to sell our time to fat cat employers, who become rich off you making yourself miserable just to survive? Why give into the pressures set upon us by members of society? Some people can handle it, others feel they must contribute and take the first job that comes along, it's not like I'm desperate for a job!

In my case, I'm looking for work, but there are several reasons why I can't find a job.. Firstly I consider myself a valuable and skillful person and refuse to be put down for 4.75 an hour scanning peoples shopping in a supermarket. Some people may think that this is a bit snooty and that I'm classing myself as higher than everyone else. Why shouldn't I value myself, why should I sell my time to someone when there are plenty of other drones willing enough to take on those jobs? If I don't put worth on my life then who will? Secondly, because of the geography of Norfolk all the jobs are atleast 20 miles from where I live, and because I can't drive I rely on public transport which ironically is unreliable! Besides of which it costs a bomb. So what have I been doing in the last 6 months of unemployment? Relaxing, everyone deserves this, but a lot of people don't get to fit this into their life. Learning, I've learnt more about the things that interest me in the last 6 months than I did in 2 years of college. And above all, preparing for my life ahead.

So the more people tell me to go out and get a job, the more I will refuse and be put off by the prospects of the sort of jobs people are stupid enough to take.
