EXPLANATIONS OF OPERATIONALISED CRITERIA/GUIDELINES FOR PROFORMA USE.

DEFINITIONS.

REVIEWED PAGE: It is the page directly linked to by the search engine.

CONTENTS PAGE: If not the reviewed page, it is the main entry page to a website.

LINK: A highlighted text allowing the user to access other information.

RELEVANT: If with respect to sites eligible for review, a relevant site must discuss treatment of schizophrenia or ADHD. If with respect to hyperlinked sites, they must deal with ADHD//schizophrenia, or be a government/other institution or service relevant to ADHD//schizophrenia or mental/medical health.

 

  1. ACCOUNTABILITY.
  2. Author Credited
    1. At least one author is stated.

    INCLUDES: if multiple relevant articles are written by multiple authors, only one author need be listed.

  3. Author Affiliation
    1. There must be mention of a named author’s organization, facility or institution of employment.

    INCLUDES: if multiple relevant articles are written by multiple authors, only one set of affiliations need be listed, so long as it is that of the named author.

  4. Author Credentials.
    1. The qualifications (etc.) of a named author must be listed.

    INCLUDES: if multiple relevant articles are written by multiple authors, only one set of qualifications need be listed, so long as it is that of the named author.

  5. Sources Given.
    1. A source is given for quotes or other information.

    INCLUDES: Reference to a person, book, magazine, popular press, television or radio programming that is not specific.

    EXCLUDES: Specific (e.g. page number/issue/volume) referencing of information sources. Source of reprinted material (e.g. "This article is reprinted verbatim from xyz.com"). A source must be for a quote or information within the article.

  6. References Given.
    1. A reference is given for quotes or other information.

    INCLUDES: Specific (e.g. page number/issue/volume) referencing of information sources.

    EXCLUDES: References (as above) that are not specific.

     

  7. Ownership.
    1. Disclosure of the owner of the website either on a page that is the TITLE PAGE or the REVIEWED PAGE, or OTHER PAGE that is not more than ONE link away from the TITLE or REVIEWED PAGE.

    INCLUDES: Institutions (e.g. universities, companies), individuals.

    EXCLUDES: Website or other companies (e.g. "ABC.COM, inc.") that do not list a physical mailing/GPO Box address.

     

  8. Sponsorship.
    1. Overt disclosure of site sponsors.
  9. Edited Last 1/12.
    1. Edited not more than one month prior to review.
  10. Creation Information Given.
    1. Date of document/website production/creation.

    INCLUDES: Copyright date given.

    EXCLUDES: Year not given. (e.g. Last modified: 20th May).

     

  11. PRESENTATION.
  12. Headings/Subheadings.
    1. Headings/Subheadings must be present.

    EXCLUDES: Title only, or only one heading without subsequent headings is given.

  13. Diagrams.
    1. Relevant diagrammatic information presented.

    INCLUDES: Interactive elements, charts/graphs.

    EXCLUDES: Aesthetic photographs or cartoons. Also, tables are not considered to be diagrams.

  14. Hyperlinks (to external sites).
    1. Links are provided to other relevant sites.

    INCLUDES: If links are on a page that is NOT MORE than ONE LINK away from the TITLE PAGE or the REVIEWED PAGE. Also included if a link is given but it is not "interactive" (e.g. you are told to go to www.abc.com but you cannot actually click it – you must type in the path manually).

    EXCLUDES: Irrelevant links, broken links, internal (intrasite) links.

  15. Advertising.
    1. Credit is given if no advertising is present.

    "ADVERTISING" INCLUDES: Popup ads, advertising contained within the text, advertising banners, order forms, request forms, any other covert or overt advertising.

    "ADVERTISING" EXCLUDES: if advert is for government or not-for-profit services. Also not considered advertising if the website is promoting itself as long as there is no fee required for anything.

     

  16. CONTENT
    1. Only overtly presented information is credited. Implied information or information hidden on subpages are not credited.

    2. ii. Recommendation to Seek Medical Advice.

    3. Advice to seek help from health care professionals qualified to offer relevant advice.
    4. INCLUDES: Advice given in disclaimers (etc) which are NOT MORE THAN ONE link away from the REVIEWED PAGE or TITLE PAGE. Also includes if text mentions that diagnosis is carried out by psychiatrists, paediatricians, psychologists, etc. Also includes sites which are run by a medical clinic advertising that patients attend their clinics.

      NOTES.

    5. If a website has multiple relevant articles, the listed criteria above only needs to be satisfied once for credit to be achieved. [e.g. where multiple authors write different articles on the same website, only ONE author of ONE article need be listed for credit to be given for "Author credited". E.g.#2: in the same circumstance, only one author need list references for "References Given" to be credited].

If a website has multiple relevant articles, they shall all count towards the total mark, taking into account the previously mentioned directive. In order to be deemed relevant, the contents page (etc) must contain a mention that the articles deal with management or treatment.
