This one's a big pet peeve. Every time I play a PSX game, the controls are different. I say there should be one set of controls for EVERY RPG. Here's the way I see this as working:

Triangle: Menu
Circle: Talk/Confirm
X: Cancel/Run
Box: Other function

Basically, its the old SNES config that Squaresoft used. And since all the buttons are relatively in the same place, this would be the best way to go. I can't stand the way default controls are. Each set is different, and impossible to remember. What's wrong with people today that make games, anyways? I remember my four button, one D-pad, no shaking, no analog, no attachments NES pad very fondly. It had five features, including buttons A and B, a START button and the less appreciated SELECT button. And of course, there was the classic D-pad. Which was NOT a fuct up little joystick stuck beside or near a D-pad, and it didn't work all the time, but it was a stubborn old thing, and I loved it very much. Especially by Turbopad. Rapid and Autofire capabilities for those excellent space arcade shooter games. People these days.
