I haven't done a rant in a long time, but now is a good time to vent some anger. Our focus topic is the computer industry. There is an article my tech wrote about the computer industry's new marketing strategy. New computers are going away from a good, functional machine into something more like a television. Think about it. Have you ever been bored and said to yourself "Let's see if I can find something interesting on the net."? Well, I did a few times and found it to be more and more like TV every page I got to. We have advertising, another way to shop without leaving the house, and even our fair share of illegal music, bootlegged movies, and TV shows some one decided to upload. Now, I'd like to know, when did we, as human beings, become so dependant on the media for kicks? I mean, suddenly, the Internet isn't just for geeks. Everyone uses it. All the party going stoners have web pages filled with pictures of their friends and themselves. No one knows how to make their own web page, and those who do are regarded as "people overworking themselves" or "the future of carpal tunnel syndrome". Not just the internet is a source of entertainment, either. Now our operating systems are all equipped with media players, cheap card games and fun, easy to use idiot proof interfaces. The problem with this whole situation is this: What happens when it's so idiot proof that the smart people can't use it because they expect something to be harder than "double click this icon and you'll be on your way"? I can use DOS, for God's sake. No one knows what DOS is anymore. They all say "DOS? isn't that what happens when my computer boots up?" (That's BIOS, dumbass). My final complaint is about speed. My computer (a P200 MMX with 64 MB RAM, 4 meg video, SBAWE32 sound, 4 Gigs, etc.) was supposed to "never become outdated". What happened to that? They said the same about the 486-66 DX2. The DX4, or "Overdrive" processor was supposed to be the powerhouse of computers for the rest of the ages (I'm still planning on building my D5-133 machine, though), and it's considered vastly outdated. So hows about we go back to the good old days of DOOM and Heroes II. What about good old AD&D games? What about stability. My Win98 needed 4.8 megs of security updates yesterday. Let's get back to basics, eh?
