Many people nowadays use P2P (Peer to Peer) clients to search for software, music and video files. Some common examples of P2P are:

-Morpheus/Gnutella Network
-Kazaa Media
-Napster

What is so important/great about P2P? Well, for one, it allows for file transfers without using an internet server. The servers keep a database of all the users online and connect you to other users by accessing their IP number and giving you remote access to a specific file on that person's computer, and when the file has been completely transfered to your computer, the P2P client disconnects you from the other person's computer. Every time you download something from someone, this process begins, and the same obviously works when you are uploading something to someone else's computer. The good thing about P2P clients, is that it takes painstaking work away from the user, and prevents hackers from obtaining your temporary IP address. Clients are great for searching databases, because they quickly give you permanent access to a constantly updated and refreshed list of files available, and provide information about each user, such as bandwidth available, approximate download time, file size, and in the case of audio or video files, the length of the video/song. This makes it easier to find exactly what you want.
