1984 is a futuristic novel about a man named Winston Smith. It takes place in Europe in a fictional country called Oceania. Everyone has devices called telescreens in their homes. These screens are there so that Big Brother can watch them. Not only were they the "eyes of the thought police" but they also ran government advertisements. Winston fought for a normal life as best as he could by trying to keep a diary of his current life, and by eventually having an affiar with a woman named Julia.-whom at first he thought was part of the thought police. In the end, the two get caught and Winston is sent to the Ministry of Love. Both of them end up being tortured and all hopes for a "normal" life are destroyed. |
