My Trip

Home-Table Rock

I left this morning 4/5/03 at 7:18AM.  The plan was to beat the traffic down 14 and 290 and across Wade Hampton Blvd.  I didn't beat it.  It was pretty busy even at that time of the morning.  I left this morning with all kinds of feelings.  I was of course excited, but there were all kinds of things running through my head when I pulled off. The weather was certainly one of them with scattered thunder showers forecast for the morning, as well as rain off and on for the next five days.   I also didn't like pulling out with Susan crying like I was being shipped off to Baghdad.  I even thought about my personal safety, something I had not worried about at all while planning this trip.

My safety was the one thing everyone kept worrying about once they knew I was going solo.  I had over a half a dozen friends offer to lend me a handgun to take with me.  Now, I don't have anything against guns, but I believe if I would have had one on the long hill from 276 up hwy 11 I would have tossed it because of the weight.  Everyone kept talking about that one crazy person out there, but I’m pretty sure in this case I am the one crazy person out there.  But none of those were the biggest fear I had.  My biggest fear was this trip would not be fun. Yeah, I was afraid I wouldn't like it.  What if this is a kid’s dream trip, and not one I really wanted to do.  Oh well.  Time will tell.  Those are the things you think about when the rain is pouring down on you.

As soon as I crossed Wade Hampton I put on my rain gear.  I no sooner put it on and the rain started.  A few minutes later the thunder started.  For the next two hours I rode through the rain.  I called Susan at the hwy 25 and hwy 11 intersections.  I forgot my rain booties and she offered to bring then to me. The only biking shoes I brought with me were my riding sandals.  Not only were my feet wet, but they were also cold.  About an hour later on the longest climb of the day she passed me and waited at the top of the hill.  By then the rain had stopped and the sun was out, but I was glad to have them because the weather doesn't look good for the next few days.  A few miles later at 11:30 I pulled in to a little cafe for a cheeseburger.  While I was eating in came Susan with some Gatorade.  After another tearful goodbye, this is third of the day, I hit the road again. I pulled into the park at 1:00.

The ride the first half was not too bad, but hwy 11 was up one hill and down another for twenty miles.  I had thought of going on to Keowee State Park but decided I was tired enough to stop.  Table Rock campground is on a hillside and was one of the steepest climbs of the day.  As I stood up and slowly pedaled up the hill to the camp site in my lowest gear my front wheel was bouncing off the ground! Fortunately there was an empty site right where both legs started to cramp up.  I hopped off the bike and said,” yeah, this looks like a good one.”  And that was the end of my first biking day on the road.

After resting up I took my “unloaded” bike for a tour around the park.  It was much nicer, but still too hilly for a lot of pleasure riding.  I did ride to the ranger headquarters and pay my $17.50 for the night.  After arriving back at camp I had some Ramon noodles and canned chicken for supper.  Oh yeah, that was good after a hard days rideL. (The park restaurant was closed for historic upgrades??? What the hell does that mean??)  It was during the fixing of my supper I realized I had not brought a drinking cup of any kind with me.  I washed out the chicken can and used that for a cup of tea.  Earl Grey tea with chicken fat just does not hit the spot like a proper English Tea.  As dark moved in I turned on my radio and climbed into the tent for what was to be the best night of the trip.

Table Rock to Hartwell State Park

4/6/2003

My plan was to be on the road by 7:00 but I couldn’t crawl out of that warm sleeping bag.  Finally around 6:45 I started some water boiling while I packed up.  I made some instant grits and ate half a bagel with a cup of hot chocolate while I finished packing, and by 7:45 I rolled out.  As has been my experience in the past, the road out of the park was a heart pumper.  When I pulled onto hwy 11 I thought I had made the toughest climb of the day. Ha!  The next 11 miles were really nice with rolling hills that helped take the chill off when you went up the other side.  It was just a warm-up though.  I started down a hill and watched my speed move past the 24-25 mph I had been doing on the past down hills.  I crossed the bridge at the bottom doing 35!  On the way up the other side I did the same numbers but with the decimal moved one place to the left, 3.5.  My legs were burning when I crossed the top and started down another screaming downhill.  This time I was too scared to even look at my speed as I zoomed over the bridge that crosses Lake Keowee.  As I started up the other side I could see the road turning slowly to the left as it disappeared out of sight … still climbing.  As I slowly cranked up the hill my burning legs had reduced my goal from reaching the top to just making it to the next mailbox, or crossing the next driveway.  If I can just make the next little pine tree I’ll rest.  The top was too far away to even imagine making.  Those were my goals.  About a hundred yards from the top I was barely doing my 3.5 mph.  My legs had had enough and I pulled over and hopped off.  As I pushed my way to the top I looked at speedometer and it read 3.5 mph!  I could walk as fast as I could ride this hill.  At the top I sat down and took a break for about 10 minutes before pushing off to reel in the next hill.  And that was the way it went for next few hours.  I finally rolled into West Union around noon and I stopped for lunch.  That was 34 miles, 20 more to go.

After eating, while I was getting ready to leave, a guy walked up to see where I was headed.  He was a biker and he told me the rest of the way was just rolling stuff with one, maybe two, good hills.  I had not met a good hill all day so I was looking forward to that.  He was right.  The worst was behind me, but the rolling was still tough enough.  Just as I pulled into the campsite the rain started.   I was able to get my tarp up before the heavy stuff hit.  That was good, because without it I would not have been able to leave the tent.  I fired up the stove and had a hearty meal of Cajun riceJ.  I have a new cup that I made out of a Gatorade bottle.  It works pretty well and I had a cup of hot tea after supper.  It has rained off and on since I setup.  I hope it's not raining when I get up tomorrow.  I don't know what it will be like taking everything down in the rain.

Quote of the day

I ate at a Mexican restaurant in West Union.  A group of waiters watched me as I rode up and locked up my bike.  When I walked in I was asked “Only one senor?”  Maybe they thought I had someone in my bag.

Hartwell to Calhoun Falls

4/7/2003

It poured last night.  Sometimes it was so loud I couldn't hear my radio.  I packed around 7:00 with a slow drizzle.  No breakfast this morning.  The tent did well during the night, but got really wet as I took it down in the rain.   I finally pulled out at 8:30 in a steady rain.

I had two choices for a route this morning.  I had to cross the river, so I needed a bridge.  I could back track four miles back up hwy 11, and hills, or take a 1.5 mile route using I-85 and no hwy 11.   I decided to cross the river by getting on I-85 (yeah, like that was a tough choice).  It was a little scary as I pedaled past the sign that said NO BICYCLES ALLOWED.  I crossed the bridge with no problems, and was glad to exit away from the high speed traffic and spraying rain.  In the town of Fairplay the rain stopped and it didn't rain on me the rest of the day.  I stopped in Iva for lunch and pulled into a laundromat to wash some clothes and dry the tent.  I spent about an hour washing and drying and caught up on the war news with some folks doing the same.  I also hear from them that the forecast is for more rain tomorrow.

As I came into Calhoun Falls I passed the Latimer Inn.  I made a quick right turn into their driveway and I had a room for the night.  It was only a mile from the camp ground and was just too good to pass up.  After unloading the bike I rode another mile down the road to eat at the Sportsman.  Now I'm seated in a recliner watching TV.  It is warm, dry and not windy.   It was none of those things on the road today.

Today started with rain but the road was not too bad.  It certainly was better than hwy 11.  My map showed the topo lines represented 120' on hwy 11 the past two days.  Today they represented only 60'.  It was rolling but not too bad.  Now the wind was another matter.  It was brutal.  Even with the easier road my mph was only 9.9.  It was also cold.  That was something I am not prepared for.  I saw my breath all day long.  Tomorrow is more rain and colder.
