| This is the place where I share what songs mean to me and what inspirations I might have had in the writing/arranging of them. A Tribute to Fresh Powder (2001): This song was my first original composition. If you listen to it, the chorus resembles Bruce Hornsby's "The Way It Is"- I actually had it stuck in my head when I wrote it. Its a relatively simple tune, the progression stays the same throughout, but then again, it is my first. Berceuse I (2002): Berceuse translates into lullaby in French, and this song is a very calming, very serene, contemplative tune. I didn't really have any particular inspiration for this, I just wanted to write a song. Berceuse II (2004): I owe this variation on my Berceuse I theme to Mr. Hoernemann, who tweaked it to add more, well, intellect, to the song. Variations on Swan Song and Berceuse I (2002): Bruce Hornsby's (who else?) Swan Song was a perfect match for Berceuse I, bringing both songs into a different realm. Swan Song has a different feel, and Berceuse I takes on an intense, drilling sound. I think I like this version better than Bruce's some days, actually (did I just say that?) The Summons (2003): I didn't actually write this one. This is a hymn from church that my mom really likes (the lyrics are inside the Roots cover). I particularly like the tune and have grown to really like the lyrics. (Hint: want 'em? buy Roots!) What I like most about it, though, is my ending- I'm particularly proud of it. Epicus (2003): I haven't recorded this one yet, primarily because I have yet to decide whether I'm going to do an electronic sound or a rustic sound. Either way, this is a powerful tune that will soon be paired with thunderous Celtic drums. Blue Sky Through Clouds (2003): This song strays from the pattern common on Variations and The Summons and is a new take on my old style. This song was inspired by Melissa- since she moved she encountered a lot of stress and emotional turmoil. I wrote this song to put down my thought about seeing the optimism in things through tough times in a way I can't explain with words. With Me in Spirit (2004)- This song was written for Melissa, and expresses the difficulties and desires of a long-distance relationship ("We spend so much time so far apart...."). The greatest part of this song, though, is that we pull it off with only 5 voices- its on all black keys. Contrasting Fields (2004)- Title track to the album! This isn't really an original as much as a compilation. I created a musical "bridge" to act as an original part of 3 songs in one- mine, Fields of Gold, and Hornsby's Fields of Gray. Temerity (2006)- A fun , meandering piece named after a section of Aspen Highlands thats particularly challenging. Its also the most independent my left hand has ever been. Temerity- n., careless disregard of danger. |
