3 – A visit to an Old Friend

Megatron wondered why he was here.
I have no purpose anymore …
He wondered what had become of the others.
They had lives …
He wondered the very existence of the world.
And why I can no longer fit in …
And it was these reasons that were why Soundwave wanted Starscream to come with him this day.

The purple and black seeker stretched his limbs with the sound akin to grinding metal and squeaking oil. “So pretty seeker, what are you going to the Loony Bin for?”
Starscream shot him a glare. Ever since they had returned to their Cybertron forms Skywarp had been calling him that for an eternity. He knew he hated it, and Skywarp got a kick out of calling him that. It was all due to the very unlikely shape of his chest, and how it had but a tiny resemblance to a human female. Starscream had nearly wrung his neck after he had told him this, saying there is no way possible that his chest looked like breasts.
“Skywarp, I think Screamer’s gonna kill you now.” Thundercracker said from leaning against the wall.
Skywarp only chuckled. He knew the ‘pretty’ seeker wouldn’t dare …
“Skywarp, I am going to tell you this once and only once,” He said in a tone of forced calm. Then his screech exploded. “Don’t ever call me that OBSURD name EVER AGAIN!”
“Gaaaah!!!” Skywarp had his hands over his audio receptors. “Not so loud Mr. Screechy!”
Starscream muttered a curse in Cybertronian and then turned to Thundercracker.
“I’m going to visit Megatron.” He said. Even as he said it he felt himself shaking inside, but he would never let it show. “Soundwave wanted me to come along.”
TC nodded. “It’s a shame he’s stuck in that place …”
“Yeah …” Skywarp agreed. “Still,” He snickered. “Couldn’t do a model show for him could ya, pretty seeker?”
It was a wonder that Skywarp lived after that comment.

Hello again why so old, wasn’t time your friend
I must be told
Hello again it seems so long
Since we last met
How has it gone?

Walking along the corridors of the great dome shaped building, Starscream had passed many people’s quarters, but recognised few names. His mind was in great satisfaction to know that there were many Autobots in here as well as Decepticons. He supposed that no matter how much time passed he would always have a somewhat sore spot for the other fraction.
Ironhide … Brawn … Sunstreaker …Man, there’s another one! He had thought. I wonder if Optimus would be in here? Nah, he’s a peace lover. Heh, how amusing … the Autobots wanting peace and yet half of them are in here too. Oh well …
Soundwave had already been to see Megatron first, and he had come out of the room with bad news. Although he seemed rather normal, he felt … dead. And there was nothing the cassette deck could do for him.
Starscream wondered what he could do if Soundwave could not. Those two had got along so well in the Great War, so why would Megatron push him away now? He had told Starscream that he had done all he could, but now it was time for someone else to take over.
The seeker was trembling as he stood in front of one of the bigger rooms, with the name Megatron above it written in purple. He looked at the door, and then pressed the button on it with one shaking hand. He could not turn back now he had come this far.
Slowly, the door opened, and Starscream stepped inside the smaller corridor. It led to a glass door, and he had heard that many of these doors had been smashed, but surprisingly, Megatron’s had remained intact the full ten years he had been in here.
Starscream stopped in front of the door and looked over at the being he had hated for so long, the being that he had promised a long time ago he would kill him, and yet he had formed a friendship with him at the last moment. How the times had changed.
Megatron was shocked.
Back in his Cybertron form he was even more massive than in his Earth one. Intimidating, scary … yet he looked different. His cannon was gone, as was parts of his armour, just like the rest of them. But his back cannon remained, even though guns had been pretty much deleted from the planet like a virus on a computer. Starscream found he was scared, but not of him, of his reaction … he needn’t have worried.
“Starscream!” Megatron said, his voice much the same as it had been for many years. The isolation had not changed it.

Don’t accept the blame I would
I would not complain
‘Cause I'm sure it wasn’t your own fault
That you never made it out your vault
Just lock the door and find some time to scream
To scream again

He had been sitting on his bed, but now he got up and unlocked the door. Starscream fought off the impulse to run as the two Decepticon leaders stared at one another for a moment. Megatron was a full head taller than him now, even though in their Earth forms they had been the same height.
He stepped back and allowed the seeker into his room.
He looked around as Megatron closed the door. It was spacious in here, with a large window overlooking the city. It had a wide hollow so one could sit in it, and perhaps stare out and wonder if they should be in that city. Megatron’s weapons were mounted on the walls, but had an energon shield over them to stop the wielder from touching them. Other than that, the room was fairly basic. A desk, bed and a shelf.
Starscream turned to his former leader, and found that he was sitting on his bed, watching him.
“So …” He said, “what have you been up to lately?”
“Oh you know, just went back to being a scientist.” Starscream said, finally speaking. “I’m on the team that’s mining for Energon, same team as Hook actually.” He snickered, “we have some of the most amusing conversations.”
Megatron finally cracked a small grin. Starscream felt heartened by this.
“He gets annoyed at me for the silliest reasons, and one time he complained that I was dirty. Well, one would be after mining in the planet! Then he sent me off to clean up, but not before I managed to hug him and make him just as filthy.”
Megatron finally let out a chuckle, and looked up at the seeker, a tired humour in his optics.
“You’re never going to change your childish ways are you, Starscream?” He said.
“Nope!” The seeker replied, but then his face faded into a questioning glance.
“But what about you?” He said, “Sh … surely you’re not going to stay here forever are you?”
Megatron let out a sigh, and Starscream came over to sit next to him. Megatron noticed, and looked over at him.
“I really don’t know what I want anymore …” He murmured. “I don’t have a place in this new world …”
“Yes you do,” Starscream said gently. “You’ve just got to make a place.”
Megatron glared at him, “for someone who’s observant you sure are blind to what people think of me.” When Starscream gave him a questioning glance, he continued in a more urgent tone, “They all fear me! If I applied for a job of some kind … Primus … people would freak.”
“Not the Decepticons …” Starscream whispered to himself, and looked over at his former leader again. He looked defeated.
“Hmm …” Starscream then thought of something, “what about the tournaments? The Gladiator Tournaments that were that were held way back? Weren’t you involved in them somehow?”
“Yeah.” Megatron looked up, “I was the champion at one stage.”
“Well, what if that came back?” Starscream asked.
Megatron was sitting up straight now, alert. It would make him feel more like he was back in with the crowd, and that he fitted in all over again, but there was still the lingering doubts and fears that begun to surface. He pushed them back roughly; he was the Decepticon leader! He would not let petty emotions get in the way of what could well be his way out.
“That … might help …” He said, blinking and then looking out the window at the sunset. The golden light made the buildings glitter and shine in many shades of silver to red, and a volt of purple and blue here and there. It was truly a spectacular site.
Megatron looked over at his once second in command and saw the light on his body. He had never really paid much attention to his Cybertron form back in the war days, but now he had the chance to look over the changes he had been though. He radiated more confidence in himself and even more pride than before. It was as though he was healing from all the crap that he had been put though in the war days, and Megatron found himself feeling both happy and guilty.
Starscream turned to face him, and then said, “I better be heading back. It was nice to see you again …”
Megatron nodded, and gave a half grin, “Likewise.”
Starscream smiled, placed a hand on one of his massive shoulders and got up to go. As he reached the door, he turned back.
“Take care of yourself, okay?”
Megatron nodded once, and Starscream left.
The Decepticon leader entered a recharge cycle soon after.

Just say when
That you’ll stop the pain of your life
Bring it to an end
Just say when
And you could make amends just say hello
Say hello
Again
