Frequently Asked Questions...

1.What services does the  school counselor provide?
I provide a variety of services which include the following: Classroom guidance sessions, support groups, individual sessions, Parent/Teacher conference support, parent workshops, referrals to community agencies, school-wide and individual crisis response, staff development and education, testing coordination and school-wide character education.

2. If my child sees you, will you tell me what was said?
Children have the right to know they can speak with me in private. I inform them that I will break confidentiality if they threaten to harm themselves, someone else or if school security is threatened. If I feel there is a need for a conference I will contact the parents.

3. Do counselors teach sex education?

We do teach a class called Good Touch / Bad Touch. This class teaches that no one has a right to touch them in a way that makes them uncomfortable. We talk about the need to inform an adult if anyone ever touches them in a way they don't like.
In the 2008-2009 school year, I will also begin teaching a puberty class for 5th graders only.

4. Do you handle discipline at the school?
Only as an extreme last resort. It would be very difficult to try to be "therapeutic" with a child and discipline them at the same time.

5. Can I come to classroom guidance sessions?

All parents are invited to attend classroom sessions.

6. If I need to see you about my child, when can I come?
Because I am all over the school or may be chatting with a student, it is better if you make an appointment to see me.
