North by Northwest...ern
by Spaen - Monday, October 24
Picture this...a near perfect day for your defense causing 3 turnovers against one of the best QBs in the passer rating efficiency department.  2 of those were near the end zone.  And yet, your defense is ranked towards the bottom of all 119 teams.  Everyone just talks about your offense.  Not only did Northwestern show their offensive thumping of Michigan State 49-14, but they showed their defense as well.  And all of this was at East Lansing.  Without a doubt, the Wildcats can finish out undefeated as long as they can win the big one at Ohio State.  If Penn State loses another game, the Cats win the conference  That's right...can you say Brett Basanez to BCS Bowl?

The Big XII had the best games overall of any other major conference.  An exciting first half at Missouri showed how Brad Smith has improved from one week to the next, and then Missouri showed off their defense in the second half.  Missouri, as well as Brad Smith, is back as he poulverized the "Blackshirt Defense" with 480 yards...of his own.
Randy Walker gets no respect...this is the biggest picture I could find of him.
Baylor almost won their second consecutive game on the road, but instead lost their second consecutive overtime game on the road.  With close wins at 2 of the most hostile environments in the Big XII, Baylor is also for real, and deserve every right to be in a bowl game.  However, Oklahoma also saved their bowl hopes with this win, and should be able to finish out with a bowl game.  The biggest highlight has to be Vince Young, the son of God.  Shutting down an amazing offense like TTU's, and giving them a taste of their own medicine, Texas clearly nabs first place in the BCS.  And they have every right to get it.  The only game that was a struggle was at Ohio State, and have dominated every other game from beginning to end.  Why does USC not deserve number one?  One word: Defense.  And I guess first half struggles too...
OTHER THINGS WE LEARNED THIS WEEKEND:
Iowa, the possible Nat'l Champ contender, will be in a struggle for that last win to gain a bowl bid.  The remaining schedule: at N'western (need I say more?), at Wisconsin (Barry Alvarez's last home game...thanks Skinner for reminding me of that), and vs Minnesota (they did beat the Big Blue at the Big House) ... It's possible to get into overtime with the score of 0-0, just ask the Sun Belt ... Thanks to the Tennessee/Alabama game, the SEC clearly has no offensive team.  Georgia?  Please, DJ Shockley was a one-game wonder ... What in the fuck happened to Arizona State?  Getting blown away by Stanford?  I've seen everything now ... After a world of hurt, Pittsburgh is 4-4.  And in the Big East, a bowl game will happen for them ... Who's the worst team: Illinois or Oklahoma State?  Discuss ... UTEP is back, slapping a 5-1 record in their new C-USA home.  Oh yeah, they dfinitely won the championship game ... Best game of the week?  Gardner-Webb pulls a stunning upset at Virginia Military Institute in 3 OT's, 55-52 ... The first team with a winning overall record in the Sun Belt is Arkansas State, spotting a 4-3 record after the win over FAU ... Boy, that USC at UCLA is gunna be a dandy.  This will make or break USC's hopes for #1 in the BCS ... Finally Duke is not shown on national television next week.  Here's to not seeing them ever again on national TV until basketball season ... Team that doesn't deserve to be undefeated?  Georgia.  Team that deserves to be undefeated?  Penn State ... Most disappointing team?  Tie goes to Oklahoma and Iowa.  Most surprising team?  Penn State ... Georgia and Alabama need to shut the hell up about getting no respect.  The SEC is full of shitty teams, and the best offense they have is by one team: LSU.  If it was my way, the only team that would be ranked in the top 25 is LSU, and they would be 25.  Just think of a Texas/Georgia matchup.  You thought USC/Oklahoma was bad.
