The Day Iowa State Basketball Died
by Spaen - Thursday, March 16
Take a good look to that picture to the right.  This could have been one of the many memorable pictures of the time of greatness.  This could of been one of the greatest histories in ISU basketball.  Wayne Morgan looked like he was taking this team to the top.  It looked like the glory days that were abruptly stopped by Howard in 2001 would be restored.  However, you look back on the 2005-06 season, and things took a downward spiral.  From the NCAA tourney to no post-season, the team showed lack of class and actual teamwork.  Everybody wanted Wayne Morgan's head, and everyone thought that Stinson and Blalock were very overrated.

Until the shit hit the fan, that fateful day of March 15, 2006.

Exactly how much shit?  That I cannot answer yet.  As it might turn out, Wayne Morgan came in on a mission to destroy what Larry Eustachy created at Iowa State.  Maybe he's just being falsely accused by Doyel.  A simple company from the west coast, called D1 Scheduling, created most of the non-conference schedules for a couple elite teams in the NCAA like Iowa State. Some of the teams the colleges faced were Howard, Iona, Louisiana Tech, and a few other mid-majors.  Each of these bigger schools give a certain amount of money to these mid-major schools.  But here's the situation: these mid-majors gave some of the money to D1 Scheduling.  Why?  Because a certain college, Los Angeles Community College, founded this D1 Scheduling company.  They would send some of their top players to those mid-major schools for that money they put into their company.

So what does Iowa State have to do with this?
Wayne Morgan...innocent or guilty?  Photo from ISU Athletics
The school itself has done nothing wrong...as of right now.  It seems to be, according to Jamie Pollard, Wayne Morgan's decision to use D1 Scheduling.  Right now it looks that the only player to be talked about in this whole mess is Anthony Davis.  However, Morgan knew about him when he was still in high school.  To fault Morgan at this point is pretty hard to do, but it does seem a bit coincidental.  The bigger thing is the other mid-major schools.  ISU could have easily not known about their money being given to that company, since it was the mid-major schools that funded D1 Scheduling.  However, that didn't stop the media, and two big players, to leave and destroy the city of Ames, Iowa.

Gregg Doyel, senior writer at CBS Sportsline, has stabbed ISU constantly and every chance he gets.  He has done so with ISU more than any other school.  His hatred toward them finally fueled some sort of CBS Sportsline investigation, and he pinned ISU as the center point in this whole scandal.  For one thing, ISU is not the center point, since there are many other top D1 programs that have used this same thing.  And of course, you have to go back to the mid-major school theory I just talked about.  Doyel opened up a can of worms that could essentially become a huge scandal for many programs, but to make Iowa State the center point is just stupid.  I've poked fun at Doyel many times for dissing ISU, but he really has taken it to the next level.  Stop criticizing this program.  You're entitled to your opinions, but don't go overboard.  You make yourself try to sound intelligent with the "smart humor" you have in your articles.  You make people want to hate you, somehow that makes you turned on.  This was the first article I've read of yours since late January when you wouldn't stop bashing Iowa State...and well, you still haven't.  Until CBS Sportsline gets intelligence to can your sorry ass, your articles will continue to humiliate their website.  Not only do your opinionated articles suck, but your reporting does too.  Paul Clark, from Rivals.com, has
more to say to you...and it's actually good stuff.  You simply have made ISU look like a laughing stock for too long.  It's one thing to poke fun at a university, another to slam it every week in your pointless articles.

Not only does Iowa State get slammed in the national spotlight, but something else begins to smell funny.  Curtis Stinson and Will Blalock decide to jettison from Ames just weeks after they both looked like their were staying.  It would be nice for both of them to pull a Dee Brown, but I don't think that's likely.  What makes it so weird is not only did they lie to the university and their fans, but they did it when all of this stuff came out of nowhere.  It has to make you wonder if there is more to this story.  And the sad thing is, there probably is.  Most stories that start out like this get worse, and end up being very bad.

So what's my final take on the situation?  I believe there is a scandal, one that involves Wayne Morgan.  I believe he knew about it and should be asked to resign as soon as some evidence surfaces.  Jamie Pollard and the ISU Athletic Dept. did not know about this scandal, and the university should not be punished.  Other schools were involved as well.  But it's unfortunate to see the basketball season end in this way.  With all the good things to look forward to next year, the Cyclones have taken a humongous leap back, and it doesn't look like they'll be at the top of the Big 12 for a very long time to come.  I guess for the true Cyclone fan...it's just another normal day.
