She stands in her designated place, greeting the customers with
a smile "Hello, how are you". Wondering in her mind if her
brother will live or die. He was hit head on by a semi going 55
on the highway. "Did you find everything you needed?" Has he
regained the use of his arms yet? Picturing him lying there on
his hospitol bed, week, unable to move. Can't get his eyes to
focus he says, as he blinks rapidly. "Do you have coupons today?"
Fighting so hard to stay in control. Smile. Smile. Smile. Very
hard to do somedays but the customer will not accept any less, nor
will the supervisor waiting to pounce on her as soon as she lets it
fade. "That will be $143.23" Their father should be there now with him.
Only three hours to go then she can see for herself, the stitches holding
him together, the machines keeping track of every breath, every
heartbeat. "Out of $150.00" So small, pale, beaten. "Here is your change
and reciept, come back again" Big fake smile. Why can't this day
just be over, if she could only make sure he is ok, touch him, hug him,
remind him he is loved and needed still. So young. Turning to the next
customer she smiles "Hello, did you find our coupon book?"
