Check Your Computer Skills!


Goals:

The purpose of this site is to help you assess your basic computer skills, word processing skills, and Internet skills and to give you some help if you need to improve any of your skills.
Your mission is to complete the series of tasks each area. After completing the tasks you will be aware of the level of your proficiency in basic computer, word processing, and using the Internet.
There are resources at the bottom of the page to help you accomplish your mission.
After you successfully complete the tasks, you should have the skills necessary to effectively use programs required for your job.


Checklist 1: Basic Computer Skills

Perform the following tasks :

  1. Correctly start up and shut down the computer.
  2. Restart the computer if it becomes locked up.
  3. Insert and eject a floppy disc and a CD.
  4. Adjust the monitor.
  5. Properly use delete, backspace, Enter/Return, Escape, and shift keys.
  6. Identify and use icons, windows, and menus.
  7. Use help and search for a topic.
  8. Explain the terms: icon, window, menu, click, select, drag, button.
  9. Use the mouse to select and deselect text (click and drag).
  10. Use the right mouse button to select tasks such as arrange icons and review properties.
  11. Open a program by clicking on the icon.
  12. Open a program from the start menu or Windows Explorer.
  13. Use the pull down menus in a program and perform some of the functions.
  14. Move, resize or close windows.
  15. Switch between open windows.
  16. Switch between open applications.
  17. View the contents of a window by using the scroll bar.
  18. Identify types of icons (file, folder, program).
  19. Save to a file or a file in a folder.
  20. Copy or move a file or folder to another folder or disk drive.
  21. Find a file or folder by name or location.
  22. Delete a file or folder.
  23. Explain the difference between bright and dimmed menu items.
  24. Copy and paste from one application to another. For instance, copy text from an Internet site and paste it into Microsoft Word.
  25. Use the right mouse button to cut, copy, paste or perform other tasks.
  26. Plug in and turn on the printer.
  27. Connect the printer to the computer.
  28. Put paper in the printer.
  29. Clear paper jams and put the printer back on line.
  30. Select the printer you want to use.


Checklist 2: Word Processing Skills.

Use the following criteria to create and save a resume in Microsoft Word.

  1. Set one inch margins at top and bottom and 1/2 inch margins on the sides.
  2. Make your name bold in 14 point font.
  3. Make the rest of the resume regular 12 point font.
  4. In your resume make a list of at least three items using bullets.
  5. Use tab to indent the list.
  6. Use the undo and redo from the tool bar. Now use the drop down menu to undo and redo.
  7. Use spellcheck.
  8. Copy and paste your resume to a new document.
  9. Delete one of the two resume files.
  10. Save the resume to a disk.
  11. Change it to a different font.
  12. Use the backspace and delete keys.
  13. Close and reopen your documents.
  14. Print both resumes.


Checklist 3: Internet Skills

Perform the following tasks:

  1. Open a web browser such as Internet explorer or Netscape.
  2. Use at least three different search engines, such as Google, Dogpile, Alta Vista, or Yahoo, to locate information on resume writing.
  3. Print information from three different web sites on this topic.
  4. Create a folder in bookmarks or favorites and add these three sites to it.
  5. Download and save a picture or a file.
  6. Change the size of the text on your screen.
  7. Open "www.geocities.com/careerquest2002" by entering the URL.
  8. Go to the home page.
  9. What is the visual cues indicating a link? Select and access a link.
  10. Use the back button to go back one or more pages.
  11. Use the history folder to see what sites you have visited.
