Symbolism
Symbolism took place from 1885 to 1910.  It was a reaction to the literal representation of subjects, and sought a more creative and evocative style.  Symbolist painters often shared a fascination with the mystical and the visionary.  They were also often interested in the erotic, the perverse, death, and debauchery.  The movement took place throughout Europe, and some artists of the movement include Gustave Moreau, Odilon Redon, and Gustav Klimt.
