| Post-Impressionism took place from 1880-1920 in France. It was both an extension of Impressionism and a rejection of the style's limitations. Post-Impressionists rejected the limited aim of Impressionists to record nature in terms of the effects of colour and light. However they did end up using the pure, brilliant colours of Impressionism, its freedom from traditional subject matter, and its short brushstrokes of broken colour. Great Artists of the movement include Pul Cezanne, Paul Gauguin, and Vincent Van Gogh. Post-Impressionism led away from a naturalistic approach towards two other major art movements, Cubism and Fauvism. |
