Medieval & Gothic Art
Medieval Art existed in the 5th century in Western Europe.  It was very religous and was known for its illustory paintings of the bible.  Gothic Art developed in the 12th and 16th centuries in France and spread throughout Western Europe.  It was mostly an architectural movement, famous for its detailed ornamentation and its pointed arhways.  Allowing for Cathedrals to be built with thinner walls, and introducing stained glass windows, the Gothic Art Movement provided for a solution to many of the inadequacies of Romanesque architecture.
