Baroque
Reactiong against the Mannerist style that dominated towards the end of the Renaissance, Baroque Art was less complex, more realistic, and more emotionally effecting than Mannerism.  It was popular in Euorope during the 1600s, and was encouraged by the Catholic Church, an important patron of the arts at that time.  Caravaggio, Annibale Carracci, and Gianlorenzo Bernini were some of the artists that helped to develope it, and it has remained one of the great periods of art in history.
