PS3 vs. Xbox 360

Which is a better bargain? Well to start the 360 is priced at $300 for the core system and $400 for the premium system, I also have to add in the 360 elite, priced at $480, which will be available later this month and is important to this conversation.

The PS3 is currently priced at $500 for the 20gig version and $600 for the 60gig. (which may or may not change since Sony has cut production of the 20gig and is talking about bringing a 80+gig model to the market).

From now on ill be comparing the 60gig PS3 with the 360 elite because both the top of the line models.
Both have USB ports and HDMI cables but thats where the similarities end. The hardware is very similar and hard to compare one to one. Ill be looking at the features of both systems.

Sony PS3

Compared

Xbox 360

Wireless Bluetooth controllers, with option to use PSP game system as an optional controller. Up to 7 controllers can be used at one time. Lack of rumble packs but is motion sensitive. Lithium rechargeable battery built in.

oth are about even but the PS3 wins because of the built in rechargeable controller. Add $20 to the 360 for a rechargeable feature.

2.4GHz wireless and normal wired controller. Up to 4 controllers active at one time. Powered by 2AA batteries. Has rumble feature but lacks any motion sensitivity.

Comes with a 60GB hard drive, which is removable and capacity upgradeable to any same spec drive in which you wish to purchase

360 would have won for double the size but with the option of PS3 to remove and replace, with no void in the warranty, I say its a tie.

Comes with a 120GB drive. Is removable but can only be replaced with another 360 style drive unit. Drive is encased in a plastic shell and warranty is voided if opened.

<>Ability to use Sony's Memory Stick SD cards, and Compact Flash cards

Point for the PS3

Can only use 360 style of memory cards at $40 each

Has a built in Blue-Ray DVD player, and normal DVD player. Blu-Ray support for games.

With no clear winner in the format war there the point go to the PS3 because it offers a BR player for half that of the market price as a stand alone system.

DVD player stock. If you want to watch HD videos you need to buy and external HD DVD player for $200 (approx). HD-DVD drive does not support HD games.

Built in Wi-Fi, 10/100/1000 Base T Ethernet ports in the rear. Free online support and mulitplayer feature.

Even though Xbox Live is far better than Sony's online, the fact is that Sony's is free and Wi-Fi ready makes it win.

Has Ethernet port, Wi-Fi capable but for an extra $100. Free Silver online account, but gold account required for online play, at a fee of $10-12

HDMI port for hi-def play back. Component cable for PS2 is compatible with the PS3. HDMI cable is extra, costing $40-60

360 wins because is gives you an HDMI cable free with purchase.

HDMI port, and comes with the cable.

<>Overall size is big, but shape and color make is seem less large. Very quite and no external power supply.
Color attracts finger prints but blends in nice with other AV equipment.

PS3 wins this because its easy to hide amongst other electronics and doesn't have a external disk drive tray. And no ugly over sized power supply to hide.

Smaller than the original and PS3 but still somewhat large. Very loud cooling fan and disc drive. Enormous power supply, almost the size of the system itself. White color gets dirty easy and sticks out like a sore thumb.

To tally up the score the its 6 to 1, PlayStation 3. The overall cost of the PS3 is $660 with the HDMI cable. In order for the Xbox 360 to be even with the PS3 in features it would cost you $800. $480 for the system, $20 for the controller recharge unit, $100 for the Wi-Fi adapter, and $200 for the HD DVD drive. Clearly from a feature perspective the PS3 is a better bargain, but from a software and online play perspective the 360 is better with better games and online support.
