OUTSIDE SKI BALANCE DRILL

Standing against the inside edge of the outside ski through a complete turn arc is the epitome of balance. With practice it becomes second nature to begin the turn arc from the snow up through the outside leg, keeping the hips inside the turn arc and utilizing the inside ski as a complimentary carving aid. To achieve this goal, work with the Outside Ski Balance Drill, utilizing a groomed terrain that is moderately steep. Begin by checking your Balanced Stance in a stationary position”

Push off in the fall line, standing on the inside edge of the down hill ski. Utilize the uphill ski as a balance guide just off the snow. Center your outside hand over the outside edge of the downhill ski. The side cut of the ski will control the turn arc. The zipper of your parka should line up with the inside edge of your uphill ski. The torso will follow the ski tips as a natural angulation occurs according to the terrain, keeping the hips inside the turn arc.

As the downhill ski runs out into the traverse, the inside ski moves on edge in the snow. This ski will become the new outside ski for the next turn arc.

This drill will enhance parallel knees/skis at turn entry, as the shoulders square up to the direction of travel, according to the terrain. It also establishes a natural stacking of the skeletal system, allowing the muscles to relax and work in unison with the body framework. Link a series of turns in this mode.
