Walking Log Sept 2002   Cape Clear
8th September
A large group took a special ferry over to Cape Clear. We had great weather and were fortunate to have local expert Chuck Kruger to lead the group and provide local knowledge.
There IS traffic, but it's not everwhere that drivers offer passing walkers biscuits. Did someone say "that takes the biscuit"
The large standing stone with the Signal Tower in the background illustrates perfectly the mysterious nature of ancient Clear Island
On top of the islands highest hill there's an impressive looking cairn; but the really exciting thing here is the nondescript pile of rubble, that just happens to be the remains of a neolithic passage grave. It makes you realize that looking out across Roaring Water Bay, the view would have been almost exactly the same 4000 years ago.

And we wondered whether this site, together with the plethora of ancient artefacts on Clear and across West Cork, tell us that these might have pre-dated Newgrange!
The Marriage Stones are really impressive, although it seems that couples in ancient times must have had small hands.
