You Don't
Know Me
*Ding-dong*
Evelyn and Rick O'Connell rang the doorbell of the three story
mansion that belonged to her Aunt Pat.
"I'm not sure they're going to like me, Evie. I mean,
I'm not
really the greatest gentleman. All the men already here will probably try
and look smug about their beautiful wives. Hey, look, I have something in
common with them already!" Rick said, as he adjusted his tie.
"Oh? And what's that, Rick?" Evelyn said, while
holding onto his
hand reassuringly.
"A beautiful wife, baby." Rick said with a sly
grin, which
quickly changed back into that peculiar mouth that he had had since
they stepped on the doorstep.
"Rick..." Evelyn said, reaching up to give him a kiss.
And with that, the door was flung open by Aunt Pat.
"Oh, so glad
you're here, Evelyn, we've all been waiting for you. Oh my, and who
is this handsome man you've got with you? Surely this is Rick, isn't
it?" Aunt Pat said, and without waiting for an answer, ushered them
inside, and continued talking. "Well, hello, Rick. I'm
Pat. Please, give me your coats and go inside and join the party!"
Evelyn and Rick gave her their coats and slowly made their way
inside. Immediately Evelyn was swallowed into a group of friendly old relatives,
leaving Rick standing all by his lonesome. Evelyn looked back as the
relatives ushered her farther into the party. She gave him a
"please-forgive-me-Rick-I-didn't-think-they-would-do-this" kind of
look as she was bombarded with questions about her and her new life by people
who hadn't seen her in "ages" as they called it, although it really
was only a few months, at her and Rick's wedding. He just smiled and
chuckled a little. Who would ever have thought Evelyn would be the life
of the party?
He looked away and searched around the room for where he could
find someone suitable to talk to for the while they were going to be
there, or at least until Evelyn could get back to him. Instead of
trying to find someone, somebody approached him. It was a woman who
wore a slinky, shimmery, gold dress that went far past the look of
decency in the bust area.
"Hello there, handsome. You looked lonely over here
all by
yourself. Do I know you?" She said.
"Uh, hi. I don't think we know each other. I was
just looking
around for my wife, actually." He stressed his voice on the wife
part, as this woman kept inching closer to him as he backed away.
"You're married? Oh damn." She chuckled,
"Oh, excuse my language. So do you have a name handsome married
man?" She inched closer again, this time laying her hand on his arm.
He subtley moved away as far as he could without being obvious
and said, "Uh, it's Rick. What's your name?"
"Jenifer, Rick. Oh wow!" She put her hand on his
arm *again*.
"Feel these muscles! Samantha!" She shouted to one of her
friends,
"Samantha, you have got to get over here!"
The friend she called to hurried over, she too wearing something
only half-decent. "Hey Jenifer, who's this friend you've made?"
"Oh, Sam, this is Rick. Unfortunately, he's
married. But feel
these muscles! You wouldn't believe it!" Jenifer exclaimed.
At that both women latched onto his arms and felt his
muscles. He felt like the biggest ass there ever was, but he wasn't quite
rude
enough to shove them off.
"Well, ladies, I've got to go get me a drink. See you
around."
Rick said, trying desperately not to just shake them off and walk
away.
"Alright then, Rick, see you around." They said as they
walked
off, giggling.
"Finally." He muttered under his breath.
"Free." He stalked off
to the open bar and got a drink.
"So, Evelyn, how's life for you? Are you still with
that husband
of yours? Too bad we couldn't make it to the wedding."
Evelyn looked at her cousins, with their skimpy dresses and
overpriced jewelry and tried to be polite. "Oh, it's a shame you
couldn't come, isn't it? Yes, he and I are still together, happily
married I guess is what they call it."
"Oh well, that's great." Samantha said. Then she
turned to her
other cousin Jenifer and whispered, "I would have guessed they would
be broken up by now. I can't imagine Evelyn being able to keep a
man." Jenifer giggled and whispered back, "I agree."
They turned back to Evelyn with their fake smiles and acted as if
nothing had happened. "So, he couldn't come tonight then? Too
bad.
I was looking forward to meeting him." Samantha questioned.
"No, no, he's here. I haven't seen him in awhile, but
he's here.
I would point him out, but I don't know where he is." Evelyn answered.
"She's probably too ashamed to point him out. He's
probably
disfigured or something." Jenifer whispered to Samantha. It took all
of Evelyn's self-control not to lash out and hit this woman.
The cousins turned away from Evelyn then, taking up their old
conversation about this man they had met earlier. "Oh wow!
There he
is! Have you ever seen such a gorgeous man? Too bad he's married, I
bet his wife is beautiful." Samantha said. "How could she not
be, to
be with a man that good looking?"
Evelyn followed their gaze and saw that they were looking right
at Rick! She suppressed a giggle for as long as she could, but there was only
a split second until she burst out laughing.
Both cousins looked over at her as it she were crazy.
"What are
you laughing at, Evelyn? Were you listening to us?" Jenifer
said.
Turning to Samantha she said, "It's not as if it matters. She's just
jealous because we have a better chance with him than she would ever
have!"
That just made Evelyn laugh harder.
"Evelyn, there is absolutely nothing funny about this!
Why are
you laughing?" Jenifer said.
"Because, because..." She just couldn't get it out, she
was
laughing so hard. Eventually her laughing subsided and she was able
to get it out without so much as a few chuckles.
"I'd just like to let you see me do something you would
never
expect of me...Hold on, I'll be right back." Evelyn said.
She backed away from her weirded out cousins and sauntered over
to where Rick was. She winked, and then said, loud enough for her
cousins to hear, who had followed her a little ways, "Hey there,
handsome stranger."
He grinned, took her hand and kissed it, then said, "Well
hello
there, beautiful. What's your name?"
"Oh, me? Evelyn. Evelyn O'Connell."
"Well, hello, Evelyn, I'm Rick. And may I say you look
simply
divine tonight?"
"Oh, well thank you, Rick. It's a pleasure to meet
you. And you look dashing tonight as well!"
"The pleasure is mine. Would you care to dance?"
Rick asked, with a wide grin spreading across his face.
"I'd love to." Evelyn answered, putting her hand in his
outstretched palm.
They walked over to the dance floor and started swaying to the
music. Evelyn caught the glance of her cousins' awestruck faces and
smiled sweetly. This was obviously too much for Jenifer to handle,
because she waltzed right up to them and started talking.
"Excuse me, Evelyn, may I cut in?" She said.
"I'm afraid not, Jenifer. I'm dancing with this lady
right now."
Rick answered for Evelyn.
Evelyn smiled in a mischevious way and just layed her head on
Rick's shoulder and shut her eyes.
"Could I have the next dance then?" Jenifer asked.
"I'll still be dancing with Evelyn then, sorry." Rick
answered.
Jenifer obviously began to get flustered as she sighed deeply and
then said, "I thought you were married! Where's your wife
then? And
you Evelyn, where's your husband?"
Many people looked over at the couple on the dance floor and the
woman standing next to them, her voice raising so that everyone within twenty
feet could hear her.
Evelyn chuckled, then began, "Jenifer, there's something I
have to tell-"
"Oh, Evelyn! Do you and Rick want to get your picture
taken for
the married couples section of the photo book I'm making? I just
thought I'd...What's going on? Why is everyone looking at me?" Aunt
Pat said. "What? Do I have food on my face or something?"
The party had suddenly gotten very quiet.
Rick cleared his throat. A man in the back coughed. A
woman
sneezed. A drunk uncle belched. Rick cleared his throat
again.
Evelyn took this to mean that someone had to say something.
"For those of you who don't know, this is my husband, Rick
O'Connell."
Jenifer and Samantha gasped. Everyone else just murmured a
chorus of "Oh" and "That's good" and "Who didn't know
that?". The party resumed it's normal volume as everyone returned to
their
conversations.
Jenifer just stood there, glaring at Evelyn.
"Why didn't you tell us that this was your husband,
Evelyn? It's
not like we wouldn't have figured it out." She said.
"Do you really want to know why, Jenifer? I'll tell
you why.
Remember high school? Remember a boy named Scott Phillips? I sure
as hell hope you do, because I most certainly do. I had the biggest
crush on him, and he liked me as well. But the day you came to our
school you ruined it all. It was like he forgot all about me. I
wasn't in love with him, but it hurt me to find out that whatever I
did, you could do better. You got all the boys. You were the
prettiest girl in school, the most popular. The only thing I could do better
was get good grades, and no one cares about that in high
school, at least no one who matters. That was your opinion anyway.
I didn't matter, because all I cared about was school, that's what you thought.
That was not true. I cared about Scott. But you took him from
me. And you thought it didn't matter. That's why I didn't tell you
about Rick. Not because I'm afraid that you'll take him from me because
nothing could do that, but because I wanted to show you that I
do matter. I wanted to show you that I can get something better than
you. And I wanted to show you that you don't know me at all. So
don't judge me and think that you're better than me, that I never had
a chance with anyone, that I don't matter. Because I do."
********Silence*********
"Evelyn, I'll get your coat, sweetheart." Rick said.
"Yes, Rick, I think that will be a good idea." She
said, wiping
away the one stray tear that had slid down her cheek.
He escorted her to the door where they said 'goodbye' to Aunt
Pat, apologized for leaving early, and exited the house.
On the way home, the first few minutes of the car ride was
quiet.
Rick broke the silence.
"Baby, why didn't you tell me about those girls? And
about this
Scott guy? I'm not angry, I have nothing to be angry about, but I'm
concerned about you. Are you okay?"
"Rick, I just...I just didn't know that they were going to
be the
same way they've always been. I've always thought that time would
change the way they are, but it hasn't. I don't know why they're so
cruel. You should have heard what they said about me when they
thought I couldn't hear them. They said that I didn't deserve you.
That I wouldn't be able to keep a man. What I'm wondering is, why do
they think so lowly of me? What have I done to deserve this?" Evelyn
explained.
"Now baby, you do not deserve this, not one bit. Not
for one
second will I listen to you break yourself down because of what they
said and did. I'm proud of you, baby. You shouldn't let them push
you around and you didn't. And neither of those girls was half as
beautiful as you are. You did the right thing. And it was a good
time making them jealous of you. I can't see how they wouldn't be, I
mean, not being able to dance with 'that handsome man'." Rick said,
trying to lift her spirits. His efforts earned him a little chuckle
and a tiny smile. 'At least it's a start' he thought.
"Rick, can we just not talk about it? I don't want to
think about it. Please honey, I don't want to think about them...and the
past. I want to think about now, and you, and the future. Our
future." She said.
"Anything you say, baby. But one more
thing." They were stopped
at a red light, so he looked over into her eyes. "I know you.
I know who you are and who you always will be. And I love you exactly the
way you are. And you were absolutely right when you said that no one would
ever be able to take me away from you because I am never leaving you.
Never." He said.
"Oh Rick...I feel the same way. Exactly." She
said, and leaned
over and kissed him.
The light turned green, but they were oblivious to the light and
the noise. They both had found a sort of peace, because they knew,
that while no one else truly knew them, they knew each other, and
would never forget. Forgetting just wasn't an option.
