The New Sitter.
Tonight was a meeting night with the
Bembridge Scholars, and while Rick and Evelyn got ready for that event, Alex
was down in the Parlor playing with his toys. He loved is trucks, and his
blocks the best, and was making a tower for the trucks to plow through. He sat
concentrating on the task at hand while things happened around him. Uncle John
came from his part of the house, dressed for a night on the town his style,
which was gambling and drinking.
"Say there Alex, thats a mighty
fine tower you have," Jonathan observed.
"Big tow, gonna go boom
boom," He said, stacking the last block on the top. When he was ready, he
grabbed one of his red trucks, and shoved it forward, and in a moment his
magnificent tower was knocked down.
"It goed boom boom," Alex
said happily. Jonathan nodded. ' Better the tower to go "Boom Boom"
instead of something more priceless.' Jonathan thought. Lately Alex had been in
a destructive phase, and for that Reason anything he could reach, that was
breakable, had been put up high, to save from his wrath. As Jonathan was about
to say something, someone knocked at the door. While Alex went back to his
blocks and his cars, Jonathan went to get it, and found a young
girl there.
"I'm Jenny," The girl said.
"I'm Jonathan," he said back,
not sure what she wanted, then Evelyn came behind them.
"Hello Jenny, please come
in." She did.
"Jonathan, Jenny is here to
baby-sit for Alex tonight." Now he felt like a fool.
"Well then good luck." He
left then, and Evelyn shook her head.
"Don't mind him. May I take your
coat?" The girl nodded, and handed it to her, and once it was hung up they
went into the parlor where they found Alex jumping on the couch.
"Alex, get down please,"
Evelyn said.
"No don't have to," Evelyn
folded her arms and gave him a serious look, and in a moment he got down.
"Who dat?" Alex asked of
Jenny.
"This is Jenny. She is going to
stay with you while your daddy and I go to our meeting." He nodded and
went over to his rocking horse getting on, and began to rock, not all that
interested in this new person in his house. While he played Evelyn took Jenny
to the kitchen, where she had made out a schedule of sorts.
"You don't have to follow it
exactly as is, but we generally try to start getting him calmed down around 8,
and into bed by 9. It was only 5:30 right now, so she had plenty of time to get
him worn out.
"If you should have any problems
just call down to the museum, and one of us will come home. He is a
handful," Evelyn added.
"Not to worry Mrs. O'Connell, I
have 2 younger brothers, so I'm sure we will be fine," she said, as they
walked back out to the living room. Alex was there riding around the room on
his Hobby horse.
"Let me take you on a tour."
She nodded, and Evelyn led her up to the second level of the house, to her
son's room, and while she told her some of the do's and don'ts, she laid out
his pajamas, and some diapers.
"We generally rock him to sleep.
It's what works the best, otherwise he will be up when he isn't supposed to
be." As they were finishing Rick came in dressed in a suit.
"Jenny, this is my husband."
He greeted her, then they went back down to the Parlor.
"Alex, Mum and daddy are leaving
now," Evelyn said. He ran over and gave them both kisses and hugs, then he
and Jenny watched them go, and the night began.
The first hour went smoothly. Alex and
Jenny played outside, chase, and with his bouncy ball, and walked around the
gardens. It was when it was time to go in that the trouble started.
"Alex, we better be getting
inside, its getting a bit chilly, " Jenny said. At the moment Alex was
chasing his ball, kicking at it.
"I not edd go in et," he said
back. Jenny sighed, and let him have his way for a bit longer, then she
insisted they go in.
"No I not got to," Alex said.
With that he took off for the woods, and Jenny ran after him. When she caught
him he started to hit at her, and she quickly held onto him.
"Nooo et go me," he screamed,
but she did not, and after he calmed down she got him inside. The next problem
came at dinner. She got him in his highchair, and prepared the food Evelyn had
left out for them. As she sat down Alex started to throw things on the floor.
"Stop that," she said
sternly.
"I do it, not opping," he
said, and threw a bean at her. Jenny got up and took him over to the corner and
set him in time-out. He got up and ran from her, and she chased him upstairs
where he crawled under the big bed in his room.
"Alex, come out here now,"
she yelled getting frustrated.
"No," came his response. She
groaned.
"Fine you stay in here and I'll
eat all the cookies myself." That got him out very fast.
"I unt cookie too." She
smiled.
"Then you have to behave and eat
your dinner." Alex took her hand, and she led him back downstairs. For the
rest of dinner he was very good, eating all of his food, and drinking his milk.
Once they had both eaten, she got out three cookies for each of them, not
realizing that she was making a big mistake. Sugar made Alex a wild child, and
she was about to find that out.
At the museum, the meeting broke for a
brake, and now, Evelyn and Rick sat in her office.
"I swear those old men are enough
to make me want to throw a book at them. They decide they want me in their
group yet they won't listen to anything I have to say about how to bring more
business to this museum." Rick came and drew her into his arms.
"Just be patient with them. It
took you what, 4 years before they even considered you equal to them?" She
nodded. That was true, it had taken many letters, and to prove herself to them
by way of Hamunaptra, that she could do just as much as any man who had
proceeded her. She sighed resting her head against his chest.
"Where would I be without you Mr.
O'Connell," she asked looking up into his blue eyes. He grinned down at
her with that cute boyish grin that she loved.
"Probably be back in that Library
in Cairo." She nodded, glad she had him, and a son, which made her wonder
how Jenny was doing.
"Do you think we should check on
our darling boy?" she asked. He shook his head.
"It sounded like Jenny was going
to be fine, and if she needs us she will call."
Evie nodded, then one of the gentlemen
came to the door, and told them they were ready to proceed.
At home things were not going as
smoothly as Rick had thought. The sugar from the cookies had kicked in, and
Alex was being mean and hateful to Jenny. He had broken two plates, and was
hiding behind the couch.
"Alex come out here at once,"
she yelled now, that she had the dishes swept up.
"No I not do ut oo say." he
stuck his tongue at her and then hid again. Jenny sat down on the floor and
screamed, which was nothing that phased Alex. While she wasn't looking he ran
up the stairs yelling down at her. "Ooo Can't get me."
She ran after him, and he ran into his
parents room and locked the door behind him. She tried the door and found it
locked and that was panic for her.
"Alex come on out, you can have
more cookies." In the room Alex was too interested in things he should not
be. He found a trey sitting on an old trunk at the bottom of the bed. It was a
sterling silver trey with a bottle of something and two cups. Alex took the
bottle and opened it and sniffed, making a face.
"ucky," he said, and left it
alone. The bed was his interest, and he began to jump on it. Outside Jenny her
the squeak, and knocked.
"Alex lets go outside and play
with your ball."
"No oo make me go bed." He
was a smart little boy, and was not about to do what she told him. After
jumping for a while, he got tired, and went into the bathroom. There he opened
the cabinet, and found inside, bottles of stuff. He got out a glass bottle and
shook it. It had things that looked like Candy, and he took it back into his
parents room and opened it.
"Alex what are you doing?"
she asked worried about how quiet it had gotten.
"I eaten candy." That was a
bad sign, and she ran to the phone in the hall and dialed the Museum. It took
several rings, and then a young boy answered.
"Yes my name is Jenny. I need to
speak with Mr. O'Connell straight away," she said. The boy left and Jenny
paced praying that Alex had candy and not something he wasn't supposed to have.
Relief came when he picked up the phone.
"Jenny?" Rick asked.
"Oh thank goodness. Alex locked
himself in your room, and he said he's eating candy, do you have candy in
there." This alarmed Rick. The only think he could think of that was in
there that might look like candy were muscle Relaxers he had gotten from Doc
Brown when he hurt his back.
"Jenny listen to me. Call Doc
brown." At the moment Rick didn't have the number and silently cursed.
"Just hang on okay." He ran
back downstairs and into the meeting that was wrapping up, and grabbed his wife
pulling her out of the room, and on the way back to her office told her what
Jenny had said. That sent Evelyn running back to the phone.
"The number is," she told
her, and then she and Rick ran out to their car and left to get home.
Jonathan had not had any luck with his
games, and arrived home just as Jenny was coming down the stairs with tears
running down her cheeks.
"Jenny?" he asked.
"Oh thank god. Alex has locked
himself in the, in his parents room, and I think he got into something he
shouldn't have. I don't know where the key is." Jonathan ran to his part
of the house while Jenny called the Doctor who instructed her to use Ipecac to
induce vomiting. As she was getting off of the phone Jonathan came with the key,
and they ran upstairs to the door. Jonathan opened it and found Alex jumping on
the bed, and the bottle of pills spilled on
the floor.
"Alex did you eat the candy?"
Jonathan asked, lifting his nephew into his arms.
"It ucky."
"Can you show Uncle John how much
you ate?" Alex nodded and they went to the bottle. He took one then
another and another until he had 6 pulled out.
"Should we give it to him?"
Jenny asked. Jonathan nodded, and she got a spoon.
"Alex will you take this for
me?" Uncle John said. He saw it was medicinem and ran hiding under the
bed, and that was not good. Jenny got on one side and Jonathan the other. she
reached in and screamed as she felt him bite her hand.
"not med icky," Alex said
starting to cry. Jonathan got bitten too, which didn't make him happy. Alex
started to scream and cry then, and both knew something was wrong. Finally
Jonathan got hold of his leg and pulled him out, then held him down and they
got the medicine into him.
When Rick and Evelyn arrive home, Doc
Browns car was there. They both ran inside, and found Jenny sitting in the
parlor crying.
"Where is Alex?" Evelyn
yelled.
"Upstairs." She left at a
dead run, and Rick wanted to go as well, but first he needed to soothe their
sitter.
"He's okay," she said. She
told him that he had thrown up the medicine before it had a chance to do any
real harm, and that if it was all right with them she didn't want to baby-sit
for them again. Rick wasn't mad at that. Alex was just to much for a young girl
to handle.
"Let me go see them, and then I'll
take you home." They looked up as Doc and Jonathan came down the stairs.
"I'll take her home for you,"
Jonathan offered. Rick nodded, and after he paid her he ran upstairs and down
they hall to Alex's room where he found Evelyn sitting with Alex cradled in her
arms crying. He came over to them, and knelt before them.
"Hey buddy," Rick said
kissing his soft head.
"Tummy owie daddy," Alex told
him. Rick nodded, thanking god for having Alex safe. While Evelyn got him to
sleep Rick went into their room, and bathroom and cleaned out the bottom
Cabinet of anything that would be dangerous for Alex. Tomorrow he and Jonathan
would find a way to lock up all the cabinets that had dangerous things in it.
As he was finishing, Evelyn came in and put a hand on his shoulder.
"I should have thought of this
before now," Rick said as he stood and took her into his arms.
"It's not your fault, I guess when
its your first baby, you just don't consider these things until it happens, I'm
just thankful we had a sitter who could keep a calm head." Rick nodded and
held her closer.
"She doesn't want to come back,
and I gave her a little more than she would have gotten." Evelyn looked up
at him.
"I think the next time we will
just leave him with Jonathan or Marie." He nodded and lowered his head to
her mouth for a searching kiss. It was interrupted with approaching cries from
Alex, and for now, as it always seemed to be, their love would have to wait.
