On the camel ride back from Hamunaptra:
Rick O'Connell and Evelyn Carnahan knew
as they rode off into the golden sunset that they were meant for each other.
They were falling more in love by the second. Jonathan tried his best to ignore
the fact that his baby sister was in love. The amount of kissing that they did
was driving him crazy. He was so unused to this, for his sister had never even
seemed to notice men. He was so used to seeing her cooped up in the library
reading away about her beloved land. He was no novice to the world of dating,
but his baby sister loving someone was a big surprise to him. Rick O'Connell
was the dashing young legionaire and adventurer that Evelyn Carnahan was
unseperable from.
While Rick was driving the camel,
having not noticed yet the loot that Beni had left for them, Evie was very
content sitting on her beloved's lap. They would give each other little hugs
and kisses while Jonathan tried to find something else to do besides watching
his sisters display of affection for the dirty inmate he had seen in the Cairo
prison only days before. Rick was indeed a dashing legionaire and adventurer,
and Evelyn loved him with all of her heart.
Before long, the camels started getting
tired and sluggish. O'Connell suggested that they rest and sleep for the rest
of the night and continue in the morning.
Rick and Evie decided to snuggle up in
a make-shift bed that they had put together out of the upper camels blankets.
Jonathan made one for himself as well, but he was careful to make sure Rick and
Evie had their privacy.
As they laid there, Evie asked about
Rick's life before she knew him. He told of his experiences with the French
Foreign Legion and how he came to Egypt. He also told that he lived in a
orphanage in Cairo for most of his later teenage years. Rick then asked Evelyn,
what she thought of him. She simply answered that he was the only man besides
her brother that had ever been apart of her life. Rick took Evie into his arms
and hugged her as if he had just lost her. He said that no one would ever
separate them for as long as they lived.
Jonathan who was listening to much of
the conversation, knew that his baby sister and her beloved O'Connell were
unseperable, and he did listen until he drifted fast asleep.
Rick told Evie that he had wanted to
give her a kiss like he had wanted to back at the Cairo prison. Evie admitted
that she had not expected that kiss, especially since she never had seen him
before in her life before then. Evie detested the fact that her brother was
addicted to booze, and she knew he had a knack for pickpocketing. She realized
that one good thing had come from his pickpocketing. Jonathan had pickpocketed
Rick and had gotten that evil little puzzle box, though that was what lead her
to her love and Rick knew that without Evelyn, that he would have been a dead
man.
Rick finally gathered up the courage to
try to say what he had wanted to say ever since the night that Evie had been
drunk with the Warden's bottle of Glenlivet. He knew that he wanted Evie and no
other woman. He couldn't fathom a day more without her. She was his life, and
he knew that protecting her would be a full time job, and he knew that he
wanted to be the one protecting her. He finally said those words that he wanted
to say so bad. "Uh...Evie...i was uh--wondering if--if you and
i--could--get--uh--married." He had said it. He knew he sounded like a
schoolboy, but he had said it. He was more scared of what her answer would be
more than he would be battling millions of mummies. He would battle twenty
Imhoteps before he could imagine the two lettered answer. He was hoping he
would get a three lettered answer... he knew he would be so excited if he
received that three lettered answer. He grabbed in his pocket something that he
had grabbed in the treasure room when Ardeth and Jonathan had not been looking.
He had been imagining that moment for days. He picked up her slim little hand
and carefully put the little gold ring upon her finger. It was made of pure
gold. Studded in its middle was a beautiful ruby surrounded by many little
diamonds, giving it the appearance of a ruby colored sun disc surrounded by
diamonds. Then he heard it. Had she just said yes! Yes! She said yes! Rick was
giddy over with glee. He jumped up, threw Evie into his arms and gave her the biggest
kiss he had ever given her.
Nightime:
Rick was so crazily in love with this
girl. He knew exactly what he wanted to share with her, it would have to wait
until their wedding night. He knew that Evie would want to keep her innocence
until she was married. Evie was a bookie and rather unexperienced in love, but
she knew what they both wanted. Being proper didn't matter to her anymore
though she still wanted to keep her dignity. She was in love and so was he.
They wanted each other, and they planned to get each other. He would do
anything for her. As they lay on the sandy camel blankets, Evie could feel her
beloved touching her. She knew it was dangerous to do so with her brother so
close by, but she had to feel her beloved near her. Rick had spent the time on
the camel ride getting to know every detail of his beloved Evelyn. She had
simply cuddled in his lap in a hug that lasted hours. He made sure that he was
as carefull of her dignity as possible with her. After the traumatic
experiences they had just gone through, he was going to have his girl.
Rick looked up and down his beautiful
wife-to-be. Evie carefully and slowly unbuttoned Rick's shirt, careful not to
hurt him for he had many wounds especially on his back, but she didn't want to
hurt him. The back of his shirt was shredded to bits, and so some of the fabric
that wasn't blood stained yet was ripped into long bandages by Rick. Evie took
care in cleaning his wounds with a soft cloth and water. She carefully bandaged
her love's wounds. After that, Rick put on a nice clean shirt and they cuddled
together and drifted off into a deep sleep. They were together at last and they
never wanted to leave each other's arms.
The next morning:
As Evie layed with her head on one of
Rick's strong muscular arms, cuddled there while Rick had his strong arms
around her, keeping her close. Rick had been awake for a while now but he
didn't want to disturb his Evelyn as she slept there so beautiful, and he knew
that he had the love of a woman who would love none other. He stroked her
brunette locks as she slept there so peacefully. He was head over heels in love
with her, and he could not imagine being that close to anyone else.
Slowly Evelyn awoke to find her Rick
staring down at her with his beautiful baby blue eyes. He was the most handsome
man she had ever seen in her life. She loved this man more than life itself.
They both got up and straightened each
other out, while Rick was putting all of the blankets back on the camels,
Jonathan woke up to find his sister and O'Connell straightening up the camp.
Jonathan quickly got up and started putting his blankets on his camel. Soon
they were ready to finish "the two days by camel barat'm (a quote from
Beni in one of the deleted scenes)," as O'Connell's little buddy of a
weasel would say.
Rick lifted Evie up onto the camel as
it was still in the boarding position, down low to the ground. Rick swung
himself up and put Evie on his lap while Evie hugged him, not wanting to let
go. Rick gave the camel a kick, that got the camel up onto its feet. Jonathan
did the same. They headed again off into the desert, giving kisses and hugs
every so often.
The second day on the camels:
Rick loved the way Evie hung on to him
and the way that they didn't have to hide any of their emotions. Jonathan
detested, but the two lovers gave him little thought as Evie sat in the lap of
her American love. Rick thought Evelyn was the most beautiful thing that he had
ever seen. Her brunette curls that were now windblown, seemed to make her even
more beautiful.
Jonathan, knowing exactly what Rick and
Evie were up to and the fact that they weren't going to be paying attention to
anyone else but themselves, humored himself with some of Beni's loot, that was
moved onto his camel to balance out the weight since one camel was carrying two
people and the other only one. Jonathan had already found his favorite piece.
It was a golden stick (the Spear of Osiris) that had a pretty little emblem on
the top. It was a star like symbol with an almost complete circle of leaves
around it. One side of the emblem was a bit missing, but it was a sight to
behold.
Rick and Evie were now kissing
passionately. Rick mumbled sweet words into her sweet ears. "Oh Evelyn,
there is so much that I would do to show how much that I love you. I would save
you from walking, talking corpses everyday for the rest of my life, if that
meant being with you..." "Mr. O'Connell, I will never leave
you." "Call me Rick" "Oh...Rick." Rick and Evie kissed
the very kiss that they had wanted a few nights back. This time Evie's lips met
Rick's in pure ecstasy, instead of Evie's cute drunkness making her pass out in
Rick's lap like last time. Evie smiled and asked about what happened that night
when she had passed out. Rick told her that he didn't even move her from where
she had fallen asleep for hours. He just had sat stroking her hair with her
sweet head asleep on his lap. When he finally had gotten tired, he had layed
her down next to the fire, and layed down next to her. He admitted that he had
also given her a good night kiss on her forehead as well. Evie looked up at
Rick and smiled the sweetest and most beautiful smile that Rick had ever seen.
He was in love with the most beautiful woman alive, he thought to himself. He
knew that he would love her for the rest of his life.
Nightime:
That night, Rick decided that he would
stay awake so they could travel all night, so they could get back in later that
night. Jonathan's camel was attached to Rick and Evie's so that it would be
forced to follow each other without Jonathan having to be awake. Jonathan dozed
off early, and Evie soon followed. Rick figured out how to let her lay down on
the camel by supporting her in his arms. They went off into the night heading
back to Fort Brydon. They knew the Fort would be a mess, but they decided they
would stay there a few days and then head off to Evie and Jonathan's parent's
manor in the outskirts of London. This is where they planned to live and even
if they couldn't kick Jonathan out, they had decided that they would be fine if
he lived with them. Rick was already making plans for the life he would have
with his beloved Evelyn.
Fort Brydon:
As the moon shone across the Sahara
Desert, O'Connell quickly got the camels to Fort Brydon as quickly as he could
without waking Evelyn or Jonathan. It was about three in the morning when he
got there and he was exhausted. He found one of the Fort's accomedation
managers and made the arrangements for a room. He was able to get Jonathan
awake long enough for him to get on the couch in the parlor of the quarters.
Rick carried Evie into the bedroom, where he layed her down and very carefully,
so he would not wake her, took off her beige and cream high-heeled shoes that
she hadn't taken off for more than a week. He would have slipped her into her
nightgown but he wasn't sure if she would exactly appreciate that. He carefully
layed out his gun bag and his guns on the table next to the bed. He then
covered her up with the sheets and some blankets, and then he layed down on top
of the sheets with his boots still on his feet.
The latter part of the morning:
Evie, who was the first to awaken,
found herself in the presence of Rick who was quite content sleeping like a
baby, laying on top the covers ulmost as if he was ready to jump up and go, for
he still was wearing his boots and even his leather arm brace, his leather
vest, and everything else. She even noticed that he had taken the time to take
off her shoes. She got up and decided to go get something for herself, her
brother and Rick to eat. She quickly cleaned up and headed downstairs to get
something. When she came back, she found Rick up and he was actually trying to
wake up Jonathan, as if Jonathan had been the one that had been up all night.
When Jonathan finally got up, Evie got the food and they started eating. There
was a pleasant array of good food for them to choose from. Everthing from sweet
breakfast sausages to scrambled eggs and fresh fruit. There was also small
turkey, ham and cheese mini sandwiches that they all enjoyed. When they had
finished their meal, Rick and Evie spent the rest of the day in their quarters
while Jonathan headed off to the bar.
That evening:
Jonathan who knew that if he managed to
get drunk, that he would never hear the end of it from his sister. He ended up
going back to their rooms and decided he would just spend some quality time
with his sister and O'Connell. When he arrived, he discovered Rick and his
sister kissing in the parlor. He let out a sigh and muttered under his breath,
"oh, please." Evie looked up as he muttered and told him to go run a
few errands for her while she spent time with Rick.
That night:
When Jonathan returned, he found Rick
and Evie had already went off to their bedroom. On the far right wall, a twin
bed had been placed near the window. Jonathan quickly got in and fell asleep.
Meanwhile though, Rick and Evie spoke
of their undying love for one another. Rick told of his troublesome and
traumatic childhood and why he had joined the legion. After all of that was
done, he simply asked Evelyn when she wanted to get married. She simply said,
"as soon as possible." And with this, they fell asleep in each others
loving arms. They were one. They knew true love.
The next day:
As the light of the rising sun peeked
through the blinds of their bedroom, Evie awoke with a start. Rick quickly had
his arms around her and asked her what was the matter. She started to say that
it was nothing, but then she finally admitted what happened. She said that she
had dreampt that she was at their wedding, and he had not shown up, and that he
had left her there alone. Rick hugged Evie and said that nothing like that
would ever happen. He would never leave her alone for a minute. He asked her if
there was anything he could do to prove his love for her, and Evie just smiled
and said that she would like to marry him that day. Rick stared at her in
surprise. This was a lot sooner than he had imagined, and he wondered if you
could get married that quickly. Finally it was settled. The were going to have
a private ceremony, and Jonathan would give her away, since both of her parents
were dead, and he was the only relative she had. Since Rick, who had never
particularly had any friends that he could think of since he had never seemed
to stay out of trouble, and the few he had made all died in the battle against
the Tauregs back in Hamunaptra, realized that he didn't even know anyone that
he would be able to invite. So it was settled. The only persons besides them
would be Jonathan and the minister.
Later that afternoon:
Rick was able to find a retired
minister in one of the less honorary bars in Cairo, and Evie had found herself
a simple khaki skirt with a pretty white blouse that she would wear. She
couldn't get Rick to get anything, since Rick refused to try on any of the nice
things that she had shown him. He ended up just wearing basically the same
outfit he had worn on the day that they had met at the Giza Port. Nothing much
more than the same things that he wore everyday with the exception that he
promised not to wear any of his ammunition or firearms. Jonathan didn't
particularly dress up either. That was the extent of their wedding
preparations.
They got married late in the afternoon,
where afterwards they headed out to one of the more respectable restaurants in
Cairo. There they enjoyed a meal of chicken with a white wine sauce with capers
and mushrooms with some sweet raspberry chocolate mouse cake to follow. It was
probably the best meal that O'Connell had ever had, and the same for Evelyn and
Jonathan.
That Night:
Rick, Evelyn and Jonathan headed back
to their rooms at Fort Brydon. As they reached the front gates, Rick caught
Evelyn by surprise as he picked her up in his arms and carried her to their
rooms. Evie reached up and gave O'Connell a big kiss. Jonathan knowing that he
would not be noticed much for the time being, simply headed downstairs to the
bar. Rick took Evelyn and placed her on the couch near the fire place that was
already ablaze, courtesy of Rick telling the Fort's manager to do so. Rick sat
next to her and started to talk to her. The snuggled together before the orangy
glow of the dancing fire before them. Evie asked Rick the question that she had
been wanting to ask for quite some time. She asked her beautiful husband, if he
wanted any children. He simply answered back, "If they are with you, I'd
have a million..." O'Connell could see his new wife blushing as he said
that, and he knew that they were meant to be together for "all
eternity." Without telling Evelyn why, O'Connell took her into his arms
and gave her a big kiss right on her lips. He picked her up and threw open the
doors to the bedroom and laid her down on the soft feather stuffed pillows. He
quietly got up and closed the heavy doors. As he came back, Evelyn was bright
scarlet as she had figured out what he had meant for them to do.
"If we are going to have that
many, we need to try right away." Rick took her into his arms and gave her
a quiet kiss and spoke into her ear, "I promise I will never hurt
you." She smiled with a very shy look upon her face and said, "I know
you wouldn't."
Rick started to unbutton her blouse as
Evelyn started to the same with his shirt. He slowly took her blouse off and he
quickly tossed his own on the floor. He looked down at his now very embarrassed
wife, who had never shown herself to anyone except for the time when she wore a
very wet nightie in front of Rick, her brother and the warden. If she had only
been wearing her bra, she had thought then. She knew that a few of the others
had also seen her, but it was probably O'Connell that she had been the most
embarrassed in front of. She didn't particularly mind her brother much, though
he did make a point of teasing her about it, and she barely noticed that the
warden was there at all and she really didn't care because he never got out of
Hamunaptra to tell anyone.
He very slowly leaned over her and
carefully unhooked the back of her bra. Evie had finally gotten through her
mind, that he would end up seeing her completely naked sooner or later, so she
decided to go along with it, though she was still quite unsure of all of it. Of
course she knew what they were going to be doing...she didn't fall off a turnip
wagon...she had made a point of reading every book she could get her hands on
in Cairo, so she did know a little about the basics of "love-making."
Finally it was over. The best night
that O'Connell and Evie had ever known. Yes, as we all found out with
O'Connell's good friend Izzy, O'Connell did have previous girls that he was
with aka "the bellydancer." Though this was the first time he had
ever truly been in love.
Jonathan, when he got back, found that
the bedroom door was slightly cracked, so he knew that nothing was currently
going on. He peeked in and found his sister carefully nuzzled into O'Connell's
loving arms. Jonathan headed back to the parlor, where his bed was set up, and
got into bed and fell asleep as well.
The next morning:
O'Connell awoke to find his beautiful
wife laying beside him, right where he had laid her down late last night. He
knew that love was a rather new experience for both of them. Yes, O'Connell had
been around some of the other girls, but he barely cared about any of them. He
had only loved one girl in his entire life, and that was Evelyn. He would do
anything for her. He was madly in love and even though he ended up looking like
a school boy every time he talked to her, he loved her with all of his heart.
Before he had met Evelyn, he had pretty much given up on love. He never had
been very good at telling his feelings anyway, and now he was desperately in
love with someone he barely knew. Sure he knew all about her goals in life and
that she was a very strong willed librarian, but he really didn't know much
else. He decided that he would ask her to tell him about herself later that
day. He had already told most of the good parts of his life, but he really
hadn't heard much about her.
Rick sat stroking Evelyn's long
brunette curls until she finally started to wake up. As Evie awoke, she grinned
up at her husband as he leaned forward to give her a kiss. She said,
"That...was the best night of my entire life..." Rick smiled at her
with that handsome smirk of his, and looked at her through those beautiful baby
blues of his. Evie knew that she was under his spell, and Rick knew he was
under hers. After being kissed, she started to stroke his cheek with her hand.
Rick took her into his embrace and hugged her like there was no tomorrow. They
kissed deeply and fell back to sleep, cuddled in each others arms.
Jonathan, who was still recovering from
the late night at the bar, decided to check on his sister. He peeked in, first
he only cracked the door to make sure he wasn't interupting anything and when
he found his sister cuddled with Rick, he couldn't have felt more prouder of
his sister in his life. She had finally found her true love. He quietly walked
over to her side of the bed and gave her a little kiss on the side of her
cheek. He quickly walked out so that neither would wake up to find him there
and went downstairs to get some breakfast for the three of them.
Evie, who had felt the kiss on her
cheek, knew that it had not been O'Connell who had given that quick little
kiss. She knew it had been her brother and realized then how much her brother
cared for her. She looked up at her husband, who had just then woken up again
and was staring down at her. He couldn't help thinking to himself about how
beautiful his wife was and how close he had been to losing her. He had loved
her the minute he had seen her. He had been the first man to ever see all of
her hidden beauty. The beauty that she had hidden deep within her trapped in a
world of books and learning. He was the first and would be the only to have her
true devotion, and for that matter, she was the only one that he had ever cared
about.
She stared up at his beautiful blue
eyes that seemed to suck her in. She had never thought in her wildest dreams
that this once dirty ragamuffin of a prison inmate and convict, could ever win
her heart. He was the most beautiful man alive.
She always seem to lose all of her
senses of being a proper lady, when she was with her husband. She was so madly
in love with him. She couldn't stand it that she couldn't control her feelings
when she was with him. She had always been so good at that before she had met
Rick, but that was no longer. That look that O'Connell always gave her when
they were together, always won her heart. She had no clue that she would ever
be anything different than what she had been, but she knew that would never have
that innocent, bookyish way about her ever again. She was in love, and there
was no going back. Rick O'Connell had won her heart, and she would love none
other.
Rick got out of bed, threw on a pair of
pants and a shirt and came over to the bed, swung Evie up into his arms and
carried her out of the room and over to the couch, where he sat down next to
her and gave her a kiss. Just then, Jonathan came back with some breakfast,
consisting of various breakfast items and a few other little treats. Evelyn leaned
over to the tray of food that Jonathan had set down on the little table. She
picked up a plate of eggs and bacon and two forks and set it between her and
Rick. Rick took his fork and got some of the beautifully non-scorched scrambled
eggs on the fork and carefully brought it up to Evelyn's lips. Evelyn ate it
and smiled. He then took some for himself and gobbled it down in one bite.
They continued eating and Jonathan
couldn't stop thinking how sick he was getting watching his sister with
O'Connell. All they did when they were together was kissing and romantic stuff.
He truly hoped that they would get over this mushy stuff very soon, because he
was starting to feel rather put-aside by his sister. Maybe he thought this
because he was so used to being the only man in his sisters life...for that
matter, he had basically raised her! He felt it was his responsibility to
protect and watch over his baby sister...and O'Connell seemed to have taken
over his prided job. He had no idea what he should do about it...if he asked
his sister, she'd probably think that he was drunk or something. He finally
just decided to let it go and to learn to let O'Connell have the full love of
his only sister. He would try to stay out of their love life as much as
possible. But boy, was he getting a little tired of watching the two love birds
kiss and hug everytime they were in the same room. Oh well, he could live with
it for now.
Evie, noticing her brother on the other
couch, seeming rather worried, asked him what the matter was. Jonathan shrugged
and just gave a fake little smile. Evie, who knew her brother way too well to
be fooled by this, told him to tell her everything that was on his mind.
Jonathan finally after much debate, decided to let it out. After hearing all
that, Evie got off Rick's lap and went over and sat next to her brother. She
told him that he was one of the most important people in her life. Rick,
knowing that he would have to say something to the Carnahan family problems,
just said that he had never meant to steal his baby sister away from him. He
just loved her more than everything in the world. Evelyn hearing this, went on
to say that she would have had to fall in love with somebody someday sooner or
later and that she had just done. She felt sorry for her brother, but she just
decided that it would be better if she spent a little more time with him
instead of 24/7 with her new husband, Rick. Evelyn got back up and sat down
again in Rick's lap. Rick whispered in her ear, that they should let Jonathan
live with them as long as he wanted to. Evie repeated the idea to Jonathan, and
Jonathan seemed to look as though he would cry. He started to apologize over
and over again. He started to say that he couldn't possibly interupt his
sister's and the man's who she loved lives by staying and annoying them with
his way of life, but Rick finally insisted that he stay with them. Anyway, Rick
knew he owed him everything he had, for without Jonathan, he would have been
chopped to bits by the undead army if it hadn't been for that little measly bit
of that ancient egyptian stuff that Jonathan had remembered. That alone was
reason to let Jonathan live with them, and anyway, he and Evie would be able to
control some of Jonathan's drinking habits a bit more, even though Rick himself
used to drink and get drunk all the time, though he promised himself he would
never get drunk ever again if he could help it. Jonathan finally agreed and
decided it would be a lot better for all of them to stay all together.
A few days later:
Rick finally had Evie back to himself.
Evie was again sitting in his lap as they talked about what they wanted to do
with the rest of their lives. Rick was set on leaving Egypt, though it took
quite a bit of persuading to get her to want to leave. He was not about to
fight any more of those mummies for a very long time, actually he planned to
never see a living mummy again and he would keep Evelyn as far away from
anything with any sort of curse on it as long as he could. London seemed the
perfect place to go.
Evelyn said to Rick, "I know that
you don't want me in Egypt because you don't want me to wake up any two
thousand year old curses and all that, but Egypt is in my blood...you remember
the night I told you about that..." Rick looked at his cute innocent faced
wife staring at him with those big brown eyes of hers. "And you also
passed out that same night and jipped me of my second kiss and what I had hoped
to be the first real one. Your thoughts weren't all there, but you were a very
beautiful drunk!" "Oh! And to think I married you!" "You
sure did, and I am very proud that you married me. You are my entire life. I
wouldn't give you up for anything."
Jonathan walked in the room as he heard
their conversation. "Well you jolly sure shouldn't! She's a good baby sis,
she is." Rick looked up and saw Jonathan. Rick was very surprised and
rather embarrassed. Evie looked up and simply said, "Oh Jonathan, why do
you always have to eavesdrop on me. I don't like it one bit." Rick gave
Jonathan a "you better go away or I'll punch your lights out" look
and Jonathan got the drift that he hadn't come in at the right time. "Oh
well, I'll just head back down to the bar and give myself a hangover."
Evie looked a little niffed and said, "Oh certainly not Jonathan! We will
be heading off to the airport tomorrow and we don't need you recovering from a
hangover in public." Jonathan glanced at Rick who had Evie now sitting
beside him on the couch with his arms around her, and said, "You just go
to bed here and we'll head off into the other room. We need to go to bed
too," he said with a devilish grin directed at Evie, who blushed at the
thought. "Oh please. Just let me get some sleep, promise not to be too
loud for me, I have a splitting headache from all that Bourbon and Whisky."
Evie looked very angry as she looked over at her brother as he seemed to be
having fun watching his sister fume. Rick saw the tension and took Evelyn up
into his arms and headed into the other room. He looked back at Jonathan who
had just sat down on the couch with a funny expression on his face.
In the bedroom:
Evelyn who was quite embarrassed to her
brother having the knowledge of what she had been up to with Rick lately,
knowing her brother to never forget anything that she did, and she especially
was rather new at this field and didn't need him knowing about anything she
did. Yes, she knew her brother was a pro in this field, for all of those girls
he kept bringing over. It was enough to drive her mad since her old bedroom had
been directly next to her brothers and the walls were terribly thin. She just
hoped that the fort walls were about twenty feet thick.
Rick asked Evie if her brother had
always been like that, since it sounded like he had eavesdropped on her before.
Evie said that he was infamous for eavesdropping on everything, it was his
second specialty besides pickpocketing. Rick asked her then in a very sincere
tone, if she had ever loved any other man or if she had ever made love to
anyone else besides him. Evie looking rather surprised at her husbands
directness, aswered a meek "no" to this very embarrassing question.
She looked up into her husbands baby blue eyes that always seemed to melt her
heart away, and asked, "Have you?" Rick seeing a sore subject started
to derobe Evelyn. Evelyn asked again, "Have you or have you not? You asked
me." Rick slowly answered back, "Ok, I have...It wasn't nearly as fun
or sincere as I was with you." Evelyn looked up and crossed her arms over
her still bra covered chest, "And when did you plan to tell me
this?!" "Well...I didn't exactly plan to...It was a long time ago
anyway. Before I went to the Cairo Prison...About three or so years
ago...nothing special. Remember the Warden said I was just looking for a good
time. That's kind of what he meant. I used to be a drunk, remember. Much like
your brother except I didn't have that knack for pickpocketing. Everyone always
seemed to be watching me real close for some reason, as well as the fact that I
was the tallest man in my end of the French foreign legion. I was a very high
rank actually. I didn't have to wear those stupid white hats with the little
white jumper suits like the regulars. I had quite a few medals too. I wish I
still had that uniform. I liked it a lot, made me look kind of handsome."
Evelyn looked very intrigued at this part. She hadn't known that he wasn't just
one of the on foot soldiers. This made her feel a little better at her choice
for a husband.
"What happened the first time you
went to Hamunaptra?" she asked now very interested. Rick looked at her
finally feeling a bit better since he had moved her mind off the other subject.
He started telling all the nitty gritty details. "It was in 1923. Our
colonel had heard years of folklore of Hamunaptra. He was a regular English man
himself, but not very courageous. When we were in the line of fire, he ditched
us and ran. I later found out that he had been butchered like the rest of the
legion. We were attacked by the Tauregs. I believe you know of them. What I
later found to be Ardeth and some of the other Medjai, watched us get
butchered. I was chased that day. I ran out of bullets in my rifle and I
quickly pulled my twin guns from my bandaliers. Those ran out of bullets before
I reached the door of the temple. Beni was there, trying to get that heavy door
to close. He didn't wait for me to get in. He betrayed me and left me to the
Tauregs. I was chased all over that city. I finally decided to give up. I
walked up to the statue of Anubis and closed my eyes, hoping that they would
spare me. That is when they started to freak out...the horses I mean. They
started to act real funny. That's when I heard the murmering from behind me. I
didn't know if I was going skitso or that statue was talking to me. The sands
beneath my feet began to shift. A face appeared in the sand. It was that living
mummy's face. Imhotep. He knocked me off my feet! I ran. As I headed off into
the desert on foot, I saw the shadowy black figures of Ardeth and his team
looking at me. I kept on going, until I ended up in Cairo. There I got drunk
and was sent off to the Cairo prison when they found out I had been a ditcher,
or actually made me say I had ditched though I had fought the whole way
through. I was drunk and ready to say anything. So I spent almost three years
just being beaten to pieces by the Warden's command. Then I met you on the day
I was scheduled to be hung. I fell in love and you know the rest."
Evelyn was still enthralled at her
husbands wonderful story. She finally asked why he loved her. She started to
mumble that she wasn't particularly beautiful and not exactly appealing to most
men for the reason that she tended to be far to brainy for their liking. She
was a scholar, and a rather geeky one at that... Rick stared at her as she
started to talk like that about herself. It was so cute. He quickly started to
say that she wasn't even close to geeky or ugly for that matter. He repeated
over and over again how beautiful she was. When Evie heard this, she hugged
Rick with her arms around his neck and rested her head against him and started
to cry. Rick started to ask her what was the matter, but she just cried even
harder. "I--I never thought that I would ever fall in love with--with
anyone. I thought I was going to just live with my brother for the rest of--of
my life and just be who I had always been. It was such a surprise to meet you.
I--I never could see myself falling in love with anyone, but--but then you
kissed me...You kissed me and saved--saved me from him. The creature. I love
you O'Connell, I mean Rick. I love you." Rick stared down at his sobbing
wife who had watery eyes that sparkled in the candle glow and who's tear
stained face seemed to make her that much more beautiful to him. He wanted to
love this sweet girl forever.
He lifted her chin and looked into her
eyes. He saw only love and compassion. They started to kiss. Carefully and
innocently at first, but they soon were kissing madly. They finally stopped
when Rick noticed that Evelyn was about to fall off the side of the bed. Rick
carefully pulled her back onto the bed where Evie yawned and fell asleep, after
saying, "I love you, Rick." Rick cuddled her into his arms and rested
his chin on her head and fell asleep as well.
The next morning:
Rick was the first to wake up. He
looked down at his wife as she was still asleep. Her eye makeup and mascara was
down her cheeks from all that crying she had done the previous night. Her
little flaws seemed to make Rick love her even more everytime he saw them. He
didn't want to wake her up, but he knew he needed to get up. He carefully
unclasped her arms from his neck and then carefully scooted off the side of the
bed. He got up, grabbed a shirt and threw it on still open and went out of the
room, carefully closing the door. The first thing he saw was that Jonathan
hadn't made it to his little bed near the window. He fell asleep on the couch
and was still sleeping through his tiny hangover that he still had. Rick
buttoned up his shirt, pulled on his boots, straightened himself out a bit and
went down for something to eat.
When he returned, he found Evelyn
sitting next to her brother on the couch. Jonathan was still asleep and Evelyn
was all cleaned up, her face washed, her makeup redone and she wore a very
pretty khaki traveling suit. Much like the one she had worn before. Her hair
was pinned up and she had her hat on the table in front of her. Evelyn had
packed all of their belongings into suitcases and had left out some travel
wear. Rick smiled at her and gave her a hug. Rick carefully scooted Jonathan
over and sat down besides Evelyn. He scooted her onto his lap and gave her a
kiss and said, "So you already packed for us." Evelyn grinned and
said, "I packed up everything and got out your nice pants and a nice clean
shirt and your khaki jacket. I also left out some clothing for Jonathan. I
think we might have to try to wake him up soon or else you are going to have to
carry him out to the taxi and i'm going to have to well...dress him..."
Evie gave that embarrassed look over to Rick who couldn't help but smiling.
Rick said, "I'm pretty sure I can wake anyone up and scare them to bits,
hangover or not!" Evelyn smiled and got up and started to try to wake
Jonathan up. He only groaned and turned the other way. Rick got up and grabbed
him and lifted him inches above the ground by the collar. Jonathan quickly woke
up and said, "What did you bloody do that for?!" Evelyn answered,
"We have a plane to catch and I don't feel like missing it." Jonathan
grumbled and quickly got into the clothes that had been put aside for him. Rick
did the same, stopping to do a quick shave and brush his hair the way he had
had it that day at the Giza Port. Jonathan tossed on his pit helmet and stuffed
his clothes into one of the suitcases. Rick did the same. They were ready to
go.
The Airport:
Now this airport is nothing like the
ones today. It was more advanced than Winston's and certainly more advanced
than Izzy's. It had three hangers and three airplanes. Each held about twelve
passengers each. They boarded the plane that would take them to Munich. From Munich
they would go straight to London.
On the plane (Cairo-Munich):
On both sides of the plane were two
seats in each row. Rick and Evie took their seats together on the right. Rick
sat next to the window and Evie sat next to the aisle, where Jonathan sat to an
older lady in the aisle seat directly across from Evie. The aisle itself was
barely two feet wide (If you are wondering about Rick's gun collection and the
way airlines are about checking for anything of the sort, I don't think they
had those rules yet back in 1925. It was still the early days of passenger
planes.)
Rick looked over at Jonathan who was
already falling back asleep. The plane took off. He had been on numerous boat
rides and had walked and rode across deserts but never had he been on a plane
ride that took him out of one country. It had always been little joy rides (oh
yeah, the last one was such a joy! ha, yeah right!) on antique aircraft that
was as old and frail as ancient rubbish. Winston's plane was only 9 years old,
but it had seen better days. Izzy's on the other hand, was amazing to see just
because it looked more like a rubbish heap that looked like a pile of scrap
metal and who knows what else. It worked though, not exactly well, but it flew.
Evelyn was reading another book on
Egypt. This one was about Ramses II. That's all Rick needed to see to know that
he wouldn't have any company until she finished her book. He was rather bored
so he started reading over her shoulder. Evie noticed this and started to
explain everything. Now, Rick did know about some of the temples...well not
exactly the temples, but where they were. He did know a lot about geography,
since he was in the legion and did walk across the Sahara desert from
Hamunaptra to Cairo. Ok, so he wasn't a wiz at Egyptology. He knew his
"treasure" not history. Ramses seemed pretty interesting. Evelyn
talking about it made it twice as interesting though. She could have been
talking about a guy that swung from tree vines, banged into trees, wore a loin
cloth and talked to animals (would this by chance be about him?), and he would
have listened. He loved the sound of her sweet voice. She was his treasure. She
knew it too.
Jonathan then leaned over after waking
up and whispered in Rick's ear, "Is she boring you with her knowledge yet,
O'Connell?." Rick looked at Evelyn who was completely consumed in her book
and then glanced back at Jonathan. "She never bores me...I only love her
more for it." Jonathan gave Rick a little smirk and said, "That girl
right there is worth more than the world. You are very lucky. She never fell in
love with anyone before you. You won her heart, and you better not break it,
because that's my baby sis there." Rick looked back at Evie who was now
giving Jonathan a funny look. Rick leaned over and gave her a little kiss and
said, "Don't worry, I will always love you. That's a promise." Evie
gave that innocent little smile of hers back and started to point out more in
her book. "Ramses had over two-hundred children..." Rick was quite
content just to stare at her, but found this a perfect time to make a little
joke. "How many kids do you want?" Evie blushed like she always
seemed to when this sort of stuff was mentioned. "I don't know. As many as
you want." Rick smiled and said, "We sure will have fun then."
Evie blushed but also smiled. Rick gave her another kiss. Jonathan who had
again been eavesdropping, was getting pretty tired of all the mushy talk.
"Oh, please. Is this really the best place to be..." Jonathan quickly
noticed that Rick and Evie really didn't want to hear him whine about their
romantic mushy talk and kissing, so he shut up real quick when Evelyn flashed
him a bad look.
The rest of the plane ride to Munich
was rather uneventful, though Rick and Evie enjoyed it. It was now late
evening. The German city was very beautiful. Rick carried the gold stuffed
luggage bags and finally managed to get Jonathan to carry a few of the lighter
ones. Evie nearly toppled over when she picked up on of the bags. Rick handed
her the lightest one he could find. Gold wasn't particularly the lightest thing
to be hauling around. They took the taxi to their hotel. On the way they saw
the Glockenspeil and many beautiful buildings. The hotel was very nice. The
hotel had a small restaurant directly down a small corridor from the lobby.
They enjoyed a fine meal of good German food. They had ox-tail soup and some
German meatloaf with a mushroom gravy with a few sides of potato pancakes. Evie
was limited to one glass of burgundy. The meal was scrumptous and they then headed
off to their rooms to go to sleep since the plane left at seven thirty the next
morning.
The rooms that they were staying in
only had one room and the bathroom. The beds were just two queens (how typical,
it's a regular "Holiday Inn" (It's a Brendan Fraser joke for those
who haven't seen Blast from the Past) though make that soft water and a nice
view of the street. Lets even make it the 18th floor where Brendan looks
younger.). Rick and Evie shared one and Jonathan got the other. They all
collapsed on the beds as soon as they got in the room.
The next morning:
Seven thirty came before they knew it.
Evie only fixed up her hair a bit and they were off. The second plane was a
good deal bigger and newer. All three of them boarded and fell back asleep very
quickly.
Rick woke up about half way through the
flight and just wrapped his arms around Evie and just looked at her sleepily
for the rest of the trip. They arrived in London late that afternoon. The time
jump made it a lot later in their time, but they had slept so much that it was
fine. They did a little sight seeing, before Jonathan directed the cab driver
to the Carnahan family mansion that had been in the family for years. Jonathan
started to tell some of the Carnahan family secrets to Rick, so he knew what he
would be dealing with, since he was now part of the family. The place was
rather unkept since it had been uninhabited since their parents had been killed
by that car crash ten years ago. Jonathan had been just old enough to keep his
sister from going to an orphanage. She had only been thirteen at the time. He
was nineteen. They had moved back to Cairo when their parents died. Elizabeth
is what everyone called their mother, even though she was Egyptian. Their
father was Howard. That year in 1915 had been very hard. Jonathan had moved
himself and Evelyn to Cairo because that was their second home and Evie had
been having nightmares and he wanted her out of London for a while, plus he
prefered the nightlife in Cairo. The mansion had been home, but Evie had been
having nightmares every night following the car crash. That is why they left.
Evie had been very upset about going
back. She had now just accepted the fact that she had to go to that mansion. As
the car came near the driveway that led to the front iron gates, Evelyn told
the cab driver to stop. Rick asked why they were stopping there since it was a
very long walk and they had a lot of luggage and it wasn't very light. Jonathan
whispered to Rick that Evelyn wanted to show Rick something. They told the cab
driver to wait a minute until they came back.
Evelyn led them into a little area
where the trees were very dense. Rick gasped. One of the trees was broken in
half and somewhat charred. Scraps of metal still layed on the ground. This is
where the car had crashed. Evie bent down and laid a few flowers that she had
plucked on the way through the shrubbery. Rick lifted Evelyn up into his arms,
who was now crying hysterically with her head on his shoulder and her arms
around his neck. Rick carried her back to the front gate and set her down
upright. Jonathan started to wipe her tears away saying it was ok, as Rick
started unloading the luggage. Soon he was done and the cab drove off. It was
starting to rain, so they quickly picked up as much as they could and hurried
up to the house. Rick ran back to get the rest of it.
Evelyn now sat on the couch in the
living room. It was a homey little room, though now covered in cobwebs.
Jonathan decided to light the fireplace which already had some wood in it ready
to be engulfed in flames. The orangy glow brightened up the room a bit and soon
Evelyn had fallen asleep. Rick entered completely drenched from head to toe. He
took off his muddy boots near the doorway and came into the living room. Rick
walked over to where Evelyn lay and carefully picked her up and went off to
find their new bedroom. Now the house had twenty bedrooms and over a hundred
rooms for that matter. Rick only hoped he wouldn't get lost. Jonathan led the
way over to the main bedrooms.
Rick chose the one with the pretty red
velvet curtains edged with golden cords and large golden tassels were at the
ends of the cords. It had a pretty mahogany dresser and matching chester
drawers and a beautiful desk of the same wood. Rick had never seen anything like
it. He had no idea that Evelyn and Jonathan had so much. The furniture was
highly covered in dust, as was with the rest of the house. He sat Evie in a red
velvet upholstered chair. He carefully took off her high heeled shoes and her
jacket. He went through her belongings till he found her nightgown. After he
took off her shirt, he slipped the nightie down over her head and put her arms
through the sleeves. He undid her skirt and took it off. He then picked up Evie
and put her under the thick covers of the bed. She hadn't even noticed
anything. She was dead tired. He then commenced to take off his dripping wet
clothes that he still wore. He finally got cleaned up and headed for bed. He
was absolutely exhausted as well.
The next morning:
Evelyn was the first one to wake up.
She found herself already in her nightgown but she couldn't remember actually
putting it on herself. She realized that Rick must have gotten her into her
nightie. She smiled and went over to the other side of the bed and gave Rick a
kiss on the cheek.
This was the same room that had been
hers as a child. It was the second largest in the house and one of the most
beautiful. This was automatically going to end up being their bedroom for
reason that the largest and most beautiful had been her parents' room. Nobody
would ever be allowed in there. It was locked and the only key that opened it
was in a hiding place that only Jonathan and herself knew of. She would tell
Rick about that room when they went on a tour through the entire house.
Jonathan was all set in his old room.
He had already spread out his share of the gold pieces. The spear of Osiris
being among them. His room was dark green, again accented with gold. But this
room was clearly his. Even at nineteen he had had a drinking problem. A few
bottles unopened still were on his mantle over the large fireplace that was on
the far wall. Jonathan was very content with this room.
When Rick woke up, he was met by Evie
who gave him a kiss as he looked down at her. She was laying crossways on top
the covers still awake with her head facing Rick's on his chest, her feet
dangling off the side of the bed. Rick moved sideways on top the covers so he
was now face to face with his darling wife. He stroked her cheek and couldn't
stop looking into her beautiful big brown eyes.
He started to speak to her. "And
to think that you fell in love with me. I had pretty much accepted the fact
that my life was over. You were my last hope. That's why I gave you that kiss.
I thought I might as well take one last bit of enjoyment before I was finished.
I'm glad it partially saved me...well actually the fact that I knew where that
city of the dead was did, but anything at that point helped." Evelyn
looked almost as if she was going to burst out in tears. "That kiss might
have not have been as much of a big deal for you then, but it was my very
first." Rick almost laughed. "That was your first?" Evie looked
slightly embarrassed. "It was. You gave me my first hug from a man other
than my brother and my father when I was a little girl." Rick looked into
Evie's eyes and answered, "No wonder you took a long time to finally fall
in love with me. I was trying to hint it to you days before you finally did.
The first time you gave any way of showing that you even cared for me back was
the night that you were drunk. Gee did I want that kiss. I would have asked you
to marry me right then if you did. That whole night before we reached
Hamunaptra, all I was thinking about was you. To tell you the truth, I was
scared. I tried not to give it all away that I loved you right away. I even
pushed you back onto you saddle when you were falling off with your head almost
on my shoulder. Believe me, if you had been more open before, I would have
moved you over onto my camel so I could have you on my lap with my arms around
you, but I knew that you would probably be ashamed of me if I had."
"I admitt I might have not been too happy about it, especially with my
brother there, but to tell you the truth I was thinking about that kiss you
gave me at the prison. I wasn't exactly asleep either. I positioned myself like
I was about to fall over and I wanted to see if you would notice if I was about
to fall. My head on your shoulder was to try to get your attention. I wasn't
really in love with you, but I was curious to see how much you really cared
about me. You have no idea how upset I was when you said "Contract
terminated." I really thought you cared more about me then. Maybe I over
reacted, but I still didn't give up on the possibility that you loved me too.
It was that time when you picked me up when I fell over from the blast from
that absolutely gigantic gun of yours, that is when I fell in love with you. I
wanted to return the kiss that you had given me from that time when you held me
in your arms. That right there had been the closest I had ever been to you.
That toolkit that you gave me meant a lot to me as well, though I admitt then I
saw it more as a friendly gesture. I didn't figure out until later what you
meant by that." Rick leaned forward and gave Evelyn a kiss that lasted at
least a minute. "I was afraid you'd think I was some sappy schoolboy. I
even looked like a dork giving you Burns' toolkit. Yes, I admitt. I stole it
from Burns." Evie smiled. "I figured that. I was touched when you gave
me that. It was really thoughtful. Something that only a person that really
cared about me would do. I really liked you then. Though I still only thought
of you more as a friend, but a friend that I was rapidly falling in love with.
I had never even had a crush before I met you. I was only interested in
intellectual endevours and the search for knowledge. Love really scared
me." Rick smiled. "I might have had other girls that I had known, but
you were different from them. You were innocent from the rest of the world.
You...were beautiful. I was head over heals in trying to impress you into
liking me. I think it worked. The first thing in my life that finally went
right."
Evie gave Rick a surprise kiss and hug
and whispered, "Something I am forever greatful for." "Evie, you
think we should be doing anything romantic. You know how Jonathan is. He might
walk in. It's only safe when it's night since he is usually drunk and falls
asleep." "Don't worry, we can just get up and lock the door. He'll
figure it out that we need our privacy. He'll probably go and do some grocery
shopping anyway. He always did the grocery shopping. He was always afraid that
I would get lost in the alleys of Cairo. We'll be fine. Just lock the door, it
has a little latch there." Rick got up without breaking the kissing and
picked up Evie in his arms and carried her over to the door. He fiddled with
the lock until he got it latched. He walked back towards the bed and layed down
still not breaking the kisses. He would do anything to be with her forever.
After all "this" they both
fell asleep. It was about an hour later when Rick awoke startled when he heard
someone knocking on the door. He got Evie up and they quickly got cleaned up
and dressed. As they had thought it was, Jonathan was at the door. He looked
very happy that morning and asked Rick and Evie if he could take Rick on a
little tour of London. Evie said he could and that she had a few arrangements
to be made with hiring gardeners, groundskeepers, maids and so on. Plus she
needed to desperately get the house in order and she would start some of the
cleaning herself.
Jonathan explained that he wanted to
get Evie a few little surprises and he wanted Rick along to help pick out a few
things. Rick was pretty sure of what he planned to get. He was going to get a
brand new car (this wont obviously be the same one as in The Mummy Returns
since that would make it ten years old and from the way Rick reacts to it being
crushed by the mummy army, it sounds like it's new.). He found a brand new
black car. He noticed that he would have to get used to the steering wheel
being on the other side (in America it's on the left, in Europe it's on the
right). They also visited the jewelry shop. Rick looked for something to go
with the ring he had given her. He finally found a beautiful little gold
bracelet and a pair of little saphire earings that would complement her very
well.
Jonathan also bought Evie a few new
books when they stopped at the small bookstore on the corner. Jonathan did the
book shopping since he knew what kind of books she liked and already had read
or owned. They finally stopped at a bakery and picked up a few pastries for an
afternoon snack. The headed home as soon as they paid for the pastries.
When they returned home, Evie was just
setting up some of the requests for a gardener. She herself had already begun
to clean the living room and was just about to start the front walkway near the
front door.
Rick snuck up behind Evie and threw her
into his arms. Evie screamed in surprise. "O'Connell, what do you think
you are doing?!" "Jonathan and I have a few little surprises for
you." "Put me down, put me...thank you." Rick put Evie on her
feet and brought out the bracelet and earings. "These are beautiful! Oh
thank you, thank you, thank you! I love you!" Rick smiled and told Evie
that Jonathan had something for her too. Jonathan got out the books that he had
bought and Evie immediatly gave Rick and Jonathan kisses on the cheek. Rick
picked up Evie again and carried her outside, followed by Jonathan. Evie stared
in disbelief at the car that was sitting in the driveway. It was brand new.
Evie was close to tears when she saw it. "I love you two, so much! Thank
you for everything." Evie this time clung to Rick and Jonathan couldn't
have been prouder in his life.
When they headed back inside, Jonathan
got out some of the pastries that they had picked up. They all enjoyed eating
them and soon they had had enough and began the tasks of cleaning the
downstairs when the cleaning people came. Soon the front part of the downstairs
of the massive four story house sparkled. They knew that the house would take
weeks of work to get cleaned but they were willing to try. The gardener was
going to come the next morning to start the upkeep of the yard.
Later:
Evie went into the kitchen to start
making dinner. Rick and Jonathan also went in to help her. Soon the kitchen was
filled with the sweet smells of marinated chicken with asparagus and rice. Soon
the meal was finished. Since the dining room was not yet cleaned they just sat
at the little table in the kitchen to try their masterpiece. It was one of the
best meals that they had had. Rick and Evie did the clean up. Jonathan got out
of his chores very quickly and headed off to find some of his old spots around
London.
After all the hard work, Rick and Evie
headed into the living room where Rick and Evie shared a glass of red wine.
Rick could tell Evie was near her limit and finished off the glass.
Rick and Evie resumed their discussions
of themselves before they met. Evie had been noticing for some time the little
tatoo on Ricks hand. It was a little eye of Horus (it's there in The Mummy and
gone in The Mummy Returns (It's not the "It has the two pyramids, the eye,
the two pharaohs and everything" one, it's another one)). Rick replied
that it was slapped on him in the orphanage in Cairo. Evie wondered also why he
never took off his arm brace. Evie carefully took his hand and unclasped the
arm brace and took it off. There was another tatoo (you know which one I mean).
Rick looked up from the tatoo and said that he didn't like it that much and so
he never showed it to anybody. It had also been slapped on him in the orphanage
in Cairo, but he prefered the little eye one to the rather large and ugly one
on his wrist. He also said that he had been wearing that arm brace since he was
seventeen. The tatoos had been put on when he was sixteen. He never could
understand why he was chosen to be marked, and for that matter he had been the
only one. He finally just left it at because he was the only American born in
the orphanage. He still wondered why they chose those symbols though. Evie
still hadn't figured out what they meant, but she figured out more of what the
picture was of than Rick had. Rick only knew that there were two pyramids, an
eye simular to the one lower on his hand and that's it. Evie figured out that
the two figures of men on it were pharaohs. Rick asked why there were two then.
Isn't there supposed to only be one king. Evie said that she would check up on
it in her books and tell him if she found out anything about it.
Evie asked him how he had ended up in
an orphanage in Cairo. Rick said that when he was fourteen, he had run away
from home. He was from Chicago and had taken the train to New York City. He had
been in steerage on a ship leaving from New York that was headed for London.
From London he had gone to Paris and signed up to be a French Foreign
Legionaire. He learned French fluently with the legion. With the legion he was
taken to Egypt. It was in Egypt that they found out that he wasn't eighteen. He
had passed at first because he was very tall and big for his age. But he had
blurted out that he was only fifteen one night when he was drunk. His buddies
turned him in and he was sent to the nearby orphanage. When he was eighteen he
joined the legion again and was shoved off to Merakesch.
Rick finally got tired of telling his
story and asked Evie about hers, which he barely knew much yet about. All he
knew is she was a librarian with an Egyptian mother and English explorer father
that died ten years ago in a car crash. Oh, and she also got rejected numerous
times by the Bembridge Scholars.
Evie finally started her story. She had
been born into a happy family. Jonathan was already six when she was born. She
was born in England but lived in Egypt until she was nine when her father and
mother got jobs at the British Museum. The house had been her father's
childhood home which he was left when his parents died. The house had been in
the Carnahan family for over a hundred years. Technically the house was her
brothers, since he would always carry the Carnahan family name, but her fathers
will had been never found, since it was hidden somewhere in the house and no
one knew but him where it was. The court had decided that until the will was
found, that the house was joint custody of the closest living adult relative
and the two Carnahan children, Jonathan and Evelyn. That relative was her
father's oldest brother, her Uncle. He had died only a month later. He was the
only relative that existed. After her Uncle died Jonathan took Evie back to
Egypt, since he now was her guardian until she was eighteen. He was nineteen at
the time so he was finally given custody of his sister. The reason that they
had to do it that way is because she would have been sent to an orphanage if he
hadn't. Most of the people that knew her parents blamed the family deaths on
ancient curses. Evie still didn't believe that her parents died because of a
curse but she knew she didn't quite know the full story.
Rick finally asked about how she became
so interested in Egypt and how she became a librarian at the Museum of
Antiquities. She said that her mother and father had sent a lot of donations to
the museum and had donated all of the artifacts that the museum wanted. The
curator had known the Carnahan family for years. When she was in her early
teens that she started helping out in the library. She had been trying to get
noticed by the Bembridge scholars for years. Jonathan always was very supportive
when she came to him crying because of the many rejection letters she received.
It was always the same. "They say I don't have enough experience in the
field." Rick looked lovingly at Evelyn and said, "If they don't
except you now, it's probably because you know more than they do. You even said
yourself that the Bembridge scholars must have mixed up the books. We've seen
things that the could only think of in their wildest nightmares. A few things
that I hope we never have to see again." "You have given me an idea.
If I write a paper about what I saw, though leaving out the walking talking
corpse for the sake of not making them think that i'm out of my mind, and
they'd have to accept me.
I've actually been figuring out
Imhotep's story. You see, Seti I was the second pharaoh of the nineteenth
dynasty. He was murdered, and it was Imhotep and Ancksunamun who did so. I
believe that he had tried even then to raise her from the dead. He never succeeded
and he must have been caught. That is why he suffered the Hom-dai. I did a bit
of research on Ancksunamun. She was not his daughter like you had said that one
night, the same as the one that the Medjai attacked us ("He must have been
a little too frisky with the pharaoh's daughter."), he was actually his
wife, his mistress (The funny thing about all this is the fact that Rick is the
one that is being a little too frisky with the pharaoh's daughter. Well the
reincarnation anyway.). Well, she wasn't in love with him and Imhotep and
Ancksunamun wanted to get rid of him so they could be together. That much I
know. I plan to do a full study of this story. If only Hamunaptra hadn't
collapsed. I'm sure more of the story is there..." "Ok, let me make
this very clear. We don't go any where that has to do with the ancient dead,
curses or anything of that sort. If we even go to Egypt again, I want to hear a
full preview story of any information, including supposed curses and the sort.
You don't, we don't go." "Oh! Why I should..." "Look, I
love you with all my heart, but I don't want to lose you. You are my entire
life."
"O'Connell, I may not be all that
strong or able to defend myself very well, but I should be free to do what I
enjoy most." "Uh, huh and you also are supposed to call me Rick,
remember?" "Oh fine. I'll call you Rick." "Why do you
insist on being called Rick when everyone that I've ever heard spoken to you,
calls you O'Connell?" "O'Connell is the name that everyone gave me in
the legion. I always wanted them to call me by my first name but no one ever
did. The same with Burns, Henderson and Daniels, they told me one day at
Hamunaptra. They never were called by their first names. Come to think of it,
it's all the Americans. Well anyway, my full name is Rick O'Connell. My parents
never gave me a middle name and my first name never was Richard like everyone
thinks. It's always been Rick, even on my birth certificate." "Your
parents never gave you a middle name and gave you a nickname for your first
name?" "How uncommon is it really? What would your middle name be?"
"Well I don't know how common or uncommon or anything like that. My middle
name is Elizabeth. Evelyn Elizabeth Carnahan O'Connell! My now full name!"
"That's awfully long isn't it?" Well not really, especially before
you came about, but I like the name Evelyn O'Connell. It has a nice ring to
it." "Evie O'Connell is even better." Rick who had Evie in his
arms, leaned over and gave her a full kiss right on the lips. Evie who had seen
that kiss coming returned the kiss as well.
"Rick, I have a little question
for you." "What would you name our first child if we were to have
one?" "Well, I don't know, I never thought about it really."
"What is your favorite names then?" "Well, since I was given a
nickname for a full name, I tend to like those much better." "What
are they then?" "I have no idea, maybe Lizzie and Alex. Why?"
"I'm pregnant Rick. I found out when you were out shopping with Jonathan.
I couldn't believe it myself, but it's true. We are going to have a
child." "When...when did I get you pregnant...is this soon
possible?" "It only takes once and well I think it might have been on
our wedding night." "I didn't think it would happen this soon...I'm
going to be a dad, Evie! I'm going to be a dad!" Rick got up with Evie
still in his arms and gave her a big kiss on her cheek. "So Elizabeth if a
girl and Alexander if a boy?" "Alex not Alexander but the rest is
fine." "Rick, do you love me?" "I love everything about you
and inside of you. I still can't believe that we are going to be parents. We've
only each other about three weeks!" "The best three weeks of my
entire life. I will always love you Rick. Always."
A small while later Evie fell asleep in
Rick's arms right there in the living room. Rick just kept her there in his
arms as she layed curled up next to him on the sofa. Rick who wasn't
particularly tired just let Evie sleep there with his arms around her.
About an hour or so later:
After a few hours at the bar, Jonathan
realized that wasn't really where he wanted to be and headed home. Jonathan
came in the front door and stopped as he reached the door to the living room,
where he saw Rick and Evie on the couch. Rick who looked up and saw Jonathan.
"Am I interupting anything?" "No, Evie's just asleep. Come over
here and sit down." Jonathan came over and sat in the big plush chair.
"Is anything wrong?" "Far from it."
Rick gently started to try to wake Evie
up and finally she sat up and Rick did the same having Evie sit right next to
himself with his arms around her. "Jonathan's here. We should tell him the
news." "Rick, should we tell him now. It's nearly two in the
morning..." "I'm too proud to not." "Oh fine. Jonathan,
you're going to be an uncle." "That means you're, you're..."
"Yes Jonathan, Rick and I are going to have a child." "When,
when did you find that out?" "Today while you were shopping."
Rick was already rubbing Evie's now flat tummy. Jonathan looked very shocked
and could barely speak. Rick said, "I used to think that I was destined to
have bad luck for the rest of my life, and now it seems I have all the luck in
the world." Rick gave Evie an other kiss. "And you brought me all
that luck and more. I thought I was destined to either be dead or a good for
nothing that can't seem to be in the right places at the right times. And then
you popped up in the same place that I have seen grown men suffocate just from
the stench in. You more than stood out and to tell you the truth, I loved you
right there and then. You saved my life and you even fell in love with me, and
now I am going to be the father of a child whose mother is the woman that I
love." Evie looked into Rick's eyes and knew what he spoke was completely
true.
Jonathan was starting to get a tad
tired of this talk, but still was amazed at what he just had found out.
"You're joking right?" Evie smiled and said, "Nobody's joking
here. It's all true. Every single bit." "When...when will the child
be due?" "Well it's now November, so probably sometime in August next
year." Rick smiled at this and said, "And I will enjoy every minute
of it." Rick gave Evie a hug as Evie started to cry with her head on his
shoulder. Jonathan decided to go to bed and Rick carried Evie up to their room
as well. Soon everyone was sound asleep.
A few days later:
Evie had finally secured herself a job
in the British Museum's library. The only reason that Rick was letting Evie do
this is because she would have it no other way and she promised that she
wouldn't do anything strenuous and quit the library when she went into the
later stages of her pregnancy. Evie let Rick come with her to the museum that
day to help her start on the cataloging and shelving of new books. Rick ended
up spending the day just handing Evie books to put up on the shelves.
"Rick, could you tell me
something." "What do you want me to say?" "Rick, will you
still love me when I start to get bigger?" "Of course I will love
you. The bigger you get, the closer I'll be to seeing our child. I have not one
but two to love now. Evie, let me just say this. You're the only woman that I
ever truly loved and you have made me the happiest man alive." "Rick,
I love you, but I'm scared. It was so unexpected and well...I barely know what
to expect. I never really lived in the real world. I lived in more of a dream
world, one that was closed from life." "Evie, I am sure we can figure
it out. I might not know much along the lines of babies, but I'm sure it will
all be fine." "I hope so Rick, I hope so." "Anyway, we can
always hit the books if we have any questions. You probably already know more
than me. I only know about the first half of making babies. All I know is what
is obvious. The baby grows in the womb and a while later is born. That's the
extent of my pregnancy knowledge. I never even thought about children before
now." "To tell you the truth, I always wanted a child, but I never
had the guts to fall in love with anyone. I made a pact when I was younger,
that I would only love one man in my entire life, of course excepting my
brother, which I love dearly. You are that man. I wouldn't be able to live with
myself if you ever left me..." "Evie, don't ever talk about me
leaving you. I couldn't live a day without you." Evie got down off the
ladder and stood in front of Rick. Rick embraced Evie and said, "The
little one, the one that is both of us, I couldn't bear to leave knowing that I
shall soon have a son or a daughter. I promise that I will be the best father
that I can be." "Rick, you already are the best husband. I am proud
that you are the father of our child. I don't know what I'd do without
you." Rick hugged Evie even closer. "Part of both of us is inside
you. Even if it wasn't, I would still spend the rest of my life with you. I
love both of you." Rick and Evie kissed and Evie finally resumed her work.
As Rick and Evie got home from the
museum, Evie started telling the little bits she knew. Rick was amazed that she
she knew as much as she did. "Where did you get all of that
information?" "Well, I read the entire library, and well there were a
few of those books in there as well." "I'd be surprised if I've even
stepped in a library more than twice, neither the less read more than a few
books. Most of what I read was old discarded newspapers that a few of the
legionnaires had. A few of them had some small books and pamphlets that
everyone barrowed. It never amounted to much." "That's ok, I'm pretty
sure that I've read more books than most would ever care to read. Sekhem-na em
anu. I have obtained the mastery in the writings." "More than I know.
That's for sure." "Rick, I might know more about history and literature
and so on, but you know more about life and how to defend ones self more than
I'll ever know." "I can teach you self defence. Believe it or not,
you have a very strong right-hook." "It was? Oh well, I probably
don't even remember what a right-hook is. I believe it was the night that I had
a bit much to drink." "It was." "Could you show me
again?"
"Maybe sometime. Right now, I
think we should just go and find Jonathan and see what he's up to." As
they said this, the door opened and Jonathan had with him a young blonde with a
low cut red-sequined dress. "Jonathan, what now?" "Well sis,
meet Nell. She's a good friend of mine." Evie glared at Jonathan as she
put on a smile for Nell. Rick just smiled on and told Jonathan to bring Nell into
the living room to talk. "Johnny, who is this?" "That's my
sister Evie and her husband, Rick O'Connell. They just married." Soon all
of them where sitting on the nice couches in the living room.
"Hello, my name is Nell. Nell
Carter." Rick looked over at Evie who had just gotten up. "Would you
like some tea or something, Miss Carter?" "Some water maybe, thank
you." Rick could tell Nell didn't really want to just be chatting away
with Jonathan's family, but she was nice enough not to really show it. "So
what bar did you find Nell, Jonathan?" "Oh just in one of the local
ones. She's an actress." "I actually am in a play at the local
theater right now. Our American Cousin is the play (Oh, I wonder! (It's the
play that in 1865 was at Ford's theater and Abraham Lincoln was assasinated by
John Wilkes Booth. Another Brendan Fraser joke (Bedazzled))." "Oh,
how interesting." "It's an American play actually. You are American,
are you not?" "Yes, I'm American, though I've spent most of my life
in Egypt and a few other places with the French Foreign Legion." "So
you were in the legion. I knew someone that was in the legion once too. His
name was Beni. He had been stealing from a Church. I hid him in my apartment.
Rather a weasely character though. I could never find my diamond earings though
after that. I believe he took them." "That sounds like my little
buddy Beni." "You knew him?!" "Sure, he almost left me to
die and the last time we met up he got what he deserved." "You killed
him?" "No, I wish I did, but no, he died by his own weaselness."
"What did he do to you?" "He slammed the door shut on me and
left me to the enemy. I'm lucky to be alive."
Evie just walked in as Rick said this.
Evie looked into Rick's eyes. "And what is this about, might I ask?"
"If I hadn't made it, I wouldn't of ever had my beautiful wife." Evie
hearing this looked a bit happier and sat next to Rick as well as handing the
water to Nell. Rick popped a little kiss on Evie's cheek. Jonathan looked over
at Nell and said, "Well, we won't keep you up, so how about we go and do
our thing and we'll leave you to yourselves." "Jonathan, promise me
one thing." "What is it?" "When the baby comes, please stop
bringing girls into the house." "Oh fine!"
As Nell and Jonathan left the room,
Nell asked "Your sister is pregnant?" "Yes, yes, she and
O'Connell are going to have a child. I myself just found out about it recently.
The've only been married about two weeks or so." "Two weeks and
already expecting...why that's sure fast." "It is isn't it."
Later with Rick and Evie:
"Rick, what were you, Jonathan and
Nell talking about when I was away?" "Remember Beni? Well he stole
from her two diamond earings." "Well that doesn't surprise me. What a
coincidence then." "Sure. A coincidence. But you and I sure
aren't." "Rick, I love you. I really do. I love our child just as
much as well." "Evie, you know what's in my heart. I will do anything
to keep you and our child. Soon there will be three of us, well four I guess if
we count your brother, and I would do anything for any of you."
"Rick, do you by chance have any family?" "I have three older
brothers. Well I guess I have a niece as well. She is...she was three. That
would make her fourteen then." "What's her name?"
"Kat." "Kat? What sort of name is that?" "Kathryn.
Kathryn O'Connell. Everyone calls her Kat." "Why don't you try to
find your family then?" "I haven't seen them in eleven years."
"So, now's time to see them then. What about your parents."
"Dead. All dead. My mother died when I was born, my father was a drunk. He
died a month before I left." "I had no idea. I'm so sorry."
"It's fine. I hated my father. He hated everyone even more. Two of my
brothers are also dead." "I had no idea that you had such a sad childhood."
"It was fine and sort of strange at the same time. I was already an uncle
at eleven." "You should really invite them to stay here, or at least
to visit." "I know where they probably are. When my brother married,
he and Virginia moved to Boston." "They're in a flat near the
warf." "Well we can always try to contact them. Do you know the
address?" "Yes, believe it or not, I do." "Well then, we'll
write a little letter to them then."
A month later:
Evie's tummy was starting to show. Rick
was prouder than ever and Jonathan was ecstatic about being an uncle soon. A
letter came. It was written in neat, tidy cursive. It was Kat who wrote the
letter. Rick's brother had died three years ago and Kat's mother was on her
death bed with Tuberculosis. Kat told how she would soon be sent to an
orphanage. Her mother was about to die any day now. The consumption was getting
worse. She asked if she could get some help and if they would take her in so
she wouldn't have to go to the orphanage. Evie wrote a letter, stating that she
could come and live with Rick and herself as soon as she wanted. They also sent
their sorrow for both her mother and father.
A few weeks later:
A return letter arrived. It was a thank
you, as well as a message that Kat's mother was dead. She was being sent
overseas to England and would be arriving soon.
A week later:
The ship arrived. Kat disembarked from
the ship and stood with her two suitcases in a navy blue dress with a matching
hat and jacket. Rick noticed her by her brownish-blonde hair and hazel eyes.
She was extremely pale, and looked as if she had not seen sunlight in years.
She was by herself, very quietly gazing across the hoards of people greeting
other passengers. Rick, Evie and Jonathan went up to this girl and asked her,
her name. "I'm Kat. Kathryn O'Connell." Evie stooped down and lifted
the young girl's chin. "I'm Evelyn. And this here is your Uncle Rick and
my brother Jonathan." "You're my Aunt Evie?" "Yes. I'm your
aunt." "Now lets go home, and we can get you situated."
Rick loaded Kat's suitcases into the
car and they all got in. Rick drove, Evie sat in the passenger seat and Kat and
Jonathan sat in the back.
"Uncle Rick." "Yes,
Kat." "Why hadn't I ever heard much about you from my father?"
"I left America when I was only fourteen. You were three. Joined the
legion, met Evelyn in Egypt and we got married and moved to her family
home." "I had no idea about any of that. Are you sure your home is
big enough for an other person. I see that there is already three of you and
soon four. My house was only three rooms. Two bedrooms and a kitchen-living
room. It was terribly small." "You won't have to worry about any of
that."
As Rick said this, he pulled up in the
driveway of the massive house of thick grey stone that stood looming over them.
"This, this is your house?! I had no idea." "Welcome home,"
Rick said as he helped Evie out of the car. Jonathan quickly got out of the car
and said, "Well Kat, what do you think?" "It's--it's a
mansion." "Yes, it sure is, isn't it?" Rick went to the trunk
and got Kat's suitcases. Evie said, "You may have almost any room you
like."
The quietly walked into the front
doorway and into the living room. "This is the biggest house I have ever
seen." Jonathan said, "It's not really the biggest. Many homes in
England are quite big. I'm sure there are some that are even bigger in
America." "Well, true. In maybe Marblehead, that's real close to
Boston. Near the ocean. I lived in the poorer section." Evie took Kat
upstairs to find her a room. Rick and Jonathan followed, Rick carried the
suitcases and Jonathan left with Evie's and Kat's coats. "Pick any room
you like in this part of the house. Kat finally came across a pretty blue one
and decided on that one. Rick put the two suitcases on the bed and Kat went
over to them to unpack. On top in the one suitcase was a pretty porcelin doll
with a white dress and a pink ribbon around her waist tied in a pretty bow and
golden curls and blue eyes. It was very old and rather tattered, but it was
very special to Kat. It was put on the dresser and Kat went back to her
suitcases. Next were three dresses. All of which were getting rather worn. Next
was a jacket a handknit scarf, cap and gloves. In the other suitcase was a pair
of boots, a nightgown and a little antique jewelry box that opened up and had a
little ballerina doll that spun as music played. Evie was already in her room
pulling out some dresses that she had bought Kat before she had come. There
were probably a dozen or more. Evie asked Kat to try some of them on and to
everyone's surprise they all fit.
They all headed downstairs and went
into the living room. Kat all at once headed up to the library. "I have
never seen so many books all in one place before." Evie smiled. "What
sort of books do you like? I'm afraid most of these are about ancient
civilizations and so forth. There are a few classics as well." "I
love ancient civilizations. I can read heiroglyphics you know. I taught it to
myself." Evie looked very impressed with the young Kat. "I'm very
impressed. However did you decide to study Ancient Egyptian? You don't find
many people in America that teach themselves a completely unused language just
for the sake of that they feel like it." "I don't know. It always
called out to me. Ever since I started to have these dreams. Awful dreams they
were, though the last time they came, everything turned out rather well.
Something about a lost city. Then a terrible monster. Oh I don't know. You'll
probably think I'm crazy." "Kat. I don't think you are crazy at all.
What happened at the end?" "The monster, yet he didn't look like a
monster, yet he was, died. Something happened. The room started to collapse.
But three made it out. One did not. The one that caused the collapse. The three
people that survived, it was like a fairy-tale. They rode off on camels. I
never saw anymore visions after that." "When exactly did you have
these visions?" "About three months ago. That's when they ended
though. I don't know what they were trying to show." "Were the people
in them, the ones that go off into the desert, two men and a woman?"
"Yes, I believe so. The woman was sitting on the lap of one of the men.
The other was also on a camel. A separate one." "Before they got on
the camels, did the woman kiss the one man?" "How did you know?"
"I have a feeling I know who the people are in your visions. I am that
woman, Rick is the one man and Jonathan is the other." "Oh my god.
You are them. I saw you. I saw all of you. Who was the monster then?"
"Imhotep. High priest of Osiris. A living mummy. What was the first thing
you saw in the first of your visions?" "A woman in a library. She
toppled down the shelves and was fired. Something to do with her brother. He
was sort of drunk. Found something." "Just what I thought. Did you
see everything that happened? Quite a bit. I remember that I woke up screaming
a few times." "I know exactly what you saw. You know our story."
"So my uncle was in a prison and that's where you met?" "I'm
afraid so." "Aunt Evie, I'm scared." "Oh don't be. Please
don't be." "I swore that I would never tell a single soul what I
dreamt. I was afraid that the person I told wouldn't believe me. At least you
know what I saw." "You can tell Rick, Jonathan or I--anything that
you see. We'll believe you. I promise."
A bit later:
"Evie, what was all that
about?" "Rick, your niece, well she knows everything." "So
she's smart then." "No, that's not what I meant. She knows about us,
Imhotep and everything. The whole nightmare." "Why'd you tell her,
she probably doesn't need to be thinking about that right after she lost her
mother." "I didn't tell her. She has visions." "Visions.
You said visions. Evie, I'm about to believe a lot of things that I never
thought existed, but visions...no. I'm sure you're mistaken." "Rick.
She's seen everything. Everything from the creature, to us riding into the
sunset. Everything." "Evie, maybe this wasn't such a good idea."
"Rick. She's your niece. A fourteen year old at that." "I'm
sorry to tell you this, but most fourteen year olds don't have visions of their
aunt, uncle and their aunt's brother battling the undead. Evie, a couple of
years ago I would have found this very strange myself." "Rick. I
think there was a reason she came here. I am sure of it."
"Well even if there was, I'm not
so sure about the vision bit. How about you just sit down and rest. You've been
on your feet all day." "I'm fine really." Rick even then sat
Evie down. Evie's stomach was now really starting to show quite a bit. "Oh
Rick, this whole thing is really starting to slow me down. Some of the things
that used to be so easy are getting harder to do by the day. I love our child
dearly, though I wish it would just hurry up." "Six months more.
Still waiting. I love this child just as much as you do." "I know
Rick. I know."
Evie of course could sense the life
that was growing inside of her. Rick was growing quite fond of the bulge that
was her stomach. He had never been happier in his life. It was one of the first
things that he had been able to be proud of. The first of course being that he
had the love of Evie; his life, pride and joy. Evie of course was just as proud
as Rick of the fact that she would soon have a child to call her own. Rick was
pretty sure it would be a boy, though she didn't really know. Rick loved to
spend as much time as he could just sitting with Evie on his lap. He especially
liked to press his ear against her stomach and rub it gently. Though kissing
Evie was even better.
"Evie, when we have this child,
how do you think everyone is going to take it. Jonathan so far is happy about
being an uncle, but we don't know about Kat. She doesn't know any of our
history, or at least the parts she hasn't seen yet. How do you think the people
we know will take it. My past history will not help any at all." "No
one will need to know will they." "Look, there is something that I've
wanted to tell you for awhile now." "What's that then?"
"Evie, I'm no goody-two-shoe innocent ruffian that just did a few little
hands of poker and blackjack. I'm wanted in almost every major city in Africa
as well as some in Europe. I was broke before I met you. I was a worse drunk
than your brother and most thought I was up to no good. I have a weakness. It's
pretty girls like you. Beni even told me, and it's completely true, i've got
more balls than brains. I've already promised myself that I will only love one
girl for the rest of my life. That is you Evie. I love you."
"Rick...that is the sweetest thing anybody has ever told me. I love you
too. You are not so bad as you think. You are the most loving man alive. You're
very smart too. I don't fall for just anybody, you know. You captured my heart.
I love you so much...without you, I wouldn't know what to do. You didn't just
save me from a living curse. You saved me from a life of loneliness. You
brought me into the world that I had never been apart of. I love you Rick. I
will tell you that as many times as you want. It's the three truest words that
I've ever spoken. I love you."
Later that night:
Evie suddenly awoke that night when she
heard screaming. Evie quickly woke up Rick who was deep asleep. Rick took a few
seconds to realize what he had been woken up for. He quickly pulled on a pair
of pants and ran as quickly as they could over to Kat's room, where the
screeches and screams were coming from. As Evie reached the doorway, she saw
Kat was in a terrible state. She had her eyes closed and she was holding on to
her bed posts and was kicking and screaming. Rick and Evie were soon joined by
Jonathan who had woken up from all of the commotion. Rick, Evie and Jonathan
quickly grabbed Kat by her limbs and tried to get her to stop. Rick finally
yanked her hands off the bed posts and shook her out of it. Kat awoke as if she
had been sleeping. Her eyes started a tidal wave of tears and sobs. Evie
propped Kat against a large pillow and sat down next to her on the end of the
bed. Jonathan handed Evie a handkercheif and Evie wiped Kat's eyes with it.
Jonathan had also gone downstairs to get some water to help Kat calm down a
little.
After sipping the water, Kat was calm
enough to tell what happened. "I had an other one of those...those..."
Evie helped Kat find the words and said, "Visions." "Yes,
visions...It was strange. It was like what I had read in those books. That
creature..." Evie helped again, "Imhotep." "Yes, that was
him...Imhotep was undergoing his trial before the gods. That god...the one that
sort of is like a dog with a crocodiles head and sort of a piggish body...the
devourer." "Ammit." "Ammit, that's right. When
Im--Imhotep's heart was weighed against the feather, his heart was almost too
heavy for the scale. Imhotep was taken to the devourer who sits behind Thoth.
Oh, it was so vivid! That's when I started to scream. Ammit, he devoured him
and suddenly he was in hell. Flames engulphed him along with all these hands
and mummy-like creatures reaching out towards him. He was pulled into the walls
of this pit after he seemed to have been ripped apart. Oh, it was so scary.
I've never seen anything so horrifying." "Do you realize, Kat, that
you have seen the next world...? What you saw was something that most people
have to be dead to see. Kat, you have a gift."
Rick of course was trying to understand
to the best of his ability, to get all of this information about postmortum
technicalities. The Devil/Diable/Diablo (actually Diabla since it's a girly
devil and Spanish is anal about that kind of stuff)/The Barbara Streisand of
Evil/Satan/Lucifer/Bielsabob/The Prince of Darkness...well the Princess of
Darkness anyway (hmm...would that be...Elizabeth Hurley?!). She herself
couldn't have said it any better,"All that everyone wants to know about is
Him, like he's so bloody fascinating." Lets just say a very close relative
of O'Connell's had a little run with a very devilish devil.
Since the run through with Imhotep, the
O'Connell/Carnahan family had been very aware that the Ancient Gods of the
Egyptians did exist.
