Chapter 2 : A Major Discovery
After another few weeks of not feeling
good, always tired, Evelyn decided to go see her doctor. She had been to see him a week ago, and was
back in his office for a follow-up visit, to discuss the results of a blood
sample he took. Now she sat waiting for
him to finish with another patient.
Here eyes were closed as she sat on the small couch, and she sighed. One thing she had noticed lately is that she
was gaining weight, and she had been
walking during lunch with Rick, and after dinner, but was always exhausted
after that. The door opening from the
examination room caught her attention, and she opened her eyes as a young woman
walked out. The woman smiled at her,
then left, and Dr. Ignatus greeted her.
"Have you been resting as I asked
you to?" he asked, as he led her
back into the examination room.
"I've been trying. I still feel very drained," she said, as she sat upon the table. He nodded and sat down on his wooden stool.
"I took the sample of your blood
and ran a few tests. Among them was a
pregnancy test, which came out positive."
Her eyes got very big, and she opened her mouth then shut it. That was definantly not what she had expected to hear.
"From what you have told me about
your cycle being late, and light the last time you had it, and from the
knowledge of your marriage, I would guess that your at least 3 months
along," he told her as he marked a
few things down on her chart. She just
sat there not able to form words. When
he asked her, she lay back on the table, and he felt over her stomach pressing
in, then sat back and wrote more on her chart.
"You will need to rest
Evelyn. It is important for you, and
the health of the child you carry,"
he instructed. She nodded and
managed a thank you, then left his office and headed for home. She had planned to return to work, but with
this kind of news, she wanted to go home and be in Rick's arms. As she walked, she thought about what she
had been told. She and Rick were going
to be parents. That was mind boggling,
and frightening. She herself had
baby-sat a little when she was younger, but never for any child under the age
of two, and having a baby she knew would mean things in their lives would have
to change. She sighed and wiped away
the tears that had started to fall down her cheeks.
When she arrived home, and walked
through the door, Rick called out her name.
"Yes it's me," she managed. He walked in a smile on his face, until he saw the tears running
down her cheeks, then he gathered her against him.
"Hey," he said as she began to cry. He led her into the parlor where Jonathan
was sitting having his lunch. At her
entry, he started to say something, but Rick shook his head, and he left
without a word. Rick settled on the
couch pulling her to sit on his lap.
"Oh Rick I never thought about
it. When we made love, it was so
perfect, and I just didn't think like I should have," she sobbed against him. His hand stroked her hair and she took in a
few deep breaths and looked up at him.
"I'm pregnant," she said, and watched him. If he rejected this she knew she would
die. His reaction was much the same as
hers was. His mouth opened then shut,
then he pressed her head against his chest, and his hand reached down to cover her
slightly swollen stomach.
"I get to be a daddy," came his astonished response, and that
brought a smile to her face. She nodded
against him and he lifted her head and kissed her.
"I'm not sure about this
Rick. I've never been around babies,
and this means a lot in our lives has to change. I won't be able to work once the baby, arrives, and we won't be able to go on digs," she said and she sobbed out that last part.
"Shhh. Evie why won't you be able to work?" he asked.
"I'll need to stay here with the
baby," she said softly.
"Or I could do that," he offered.
She lifted her head again, and was very surprised.
"Do you know how to take care of a
baby?" she asked.
"I haven't the foggiest idea how
too, but you and I will learn that together," he said ,kissing her lips
once again.
"And as for us going on digs, we
might have to wait for the baby to get older, but once it is, we can go. Your parents did that when you and Jonathan
were little." That was true, but
she remembered how lonely she had been when they went away.
"I missed them allot, when they
did, I'm not sure I would want to put our baby through that," she admitted.
"Then we will find a way to take
digs that are not risky, and just take it with us," he said.
She sighed feeling better.
"What happens if we mess things
up?" she asked, still not sure
about all this. He grinned at her.
"Evie, as long as we love this
baby, and put its needs ahead of our own, we will be fine," he said feeling fairly certain that they
could handle things. Once she was
feeling better, they headed into the
kitchen and she helped him get lunch started.
To be continued.
