Title: Let Me Sleep

Author: Dani_Oconnell

After taking 6 1/2 month old Alex O'connell for a walk in the garden, Rick & Evy went to put him to bed. Rick gently layed his son in his crib. "Night, Buddy." He whispered as he kissed his forehead and left the room.

On the way back to their bedroom, next door, Evy stopped.

"Rick, maybe we should let him sleep with us again tonight....."

"Evy, he's a big boy now," he grinned. "He can sleep on his own."

As they got into bed, Rick closed his eyes, ready to get a decent night of sleep without Alex or Jonathan waking him.

"Rick?" Evy asked, "Where's Jonathan?!"

Rick groaned and turned on his side. "I don't know and right now I don't really care...............look, he's probably out partying like he usually does."

"Exactly." She answered, worried.

"Jonathan can take care of himself, stop worrying."

"Yes, I guess your right."

She tried to go to sleep. 5 minutes had passed when she heard Alex cough. She shot up and started shaking Rick.

"Rick, Rick!!!" She exclaimed.

"What is it?! Mummies?! Pygmies?! Scarabs?!" he asked, panicked, as he sat up.

"Alex coughed!"

"Is that all?!"

"He's never done that before."

"Well.....your right. We better check and make sure he's alright."

The concerned parents climbed out of bed and into the baby's room.

Evy leaned over and felt his forehead. "Oh my God! He has a fever!"

Rick looked surprised, "A fever? He hasn't had one of those before......has he?"

"No." She said as she picked Baby Alex up. "But we gotta do something."

She headed downstairs, with Rick following closely behind.

When they reached the living room, Evelyn asked, "Now......what do we do?"

Rick looked around, making sure she was actually talking to him. "I donno! You're the smart one!"

She sighed.

"OK, OK," he replied, "I say, he needs cough medicine."

"Oh! Yes, medicine, that's it!" She quickly walked to the kitchen. She set Alex in his highchair and brung out the medicine.

"Open wide, Alex!" She smiled as she tried to feed it to him, but he didn't budge.

"He's not that stupid, Evy." Rick teased.

"Then what do you supposed I do?" She asked.

He shrugged. "Maybe you should make him laugh? To get him to open his

mouth......"

"Great Idea!" Evy watched him.

"Wait, you don't expect ME to make him laugh, do you?!"

"Why not?!"

"Well, I don't know - arg! Forget it, I'll do it."

Rick made a weird face at Alex. He made no reaction. Evy looked at him. "Rick, you wanna make him laugh, not scare him." She kinda laughed.

"Sorry...." He mumbled.

"Here, let me try." She picked up the spoon and sang, "Choo-Choo! Open the tunnel for the train!" Alex just sat there.

"That's the oldest trick in the book." Rick told her.

He began to sing, (to the tune of 'Hush Little Baby') "Alex, baby, you better laugh, or Daddy's gonna feed you to Imhotep - "

"Rick!!!" Evy scolded "Don't say that!!!"

He tried not to laugh. "I'm sorry.....you know I don't mean it or anything...."

"Well, still - oh, forget it. We need him to take his medicine!!!" She complained.

Rick then kneeled on the floor and started quacking like a duck and waddling in circles. Evy couldn't believe her eyes. She burst out laughing, along with Alex. With tears running down her cheeks, she fed him the medicine.

"There." She turned to Rick who was now standing and started laughing again. He just stood there, humiliated.

"Can we go to bed, now?!" he asked trying to change the subject.

"Yes, please!" She agreed, and took Alex back up to his room.

Rick layed back in bed. "NOW I can sleep."

As both parents started to drift off, Alex started to cry. Rick and Evy jumped and fighted each other for the door. When they were by Alex's side, he stopped crying.

"Well,......... he just wants us. Let's just let him sleep with us." Evy insisted.

"He's gotta learn to sleep on his own...... we can just stay here until he falls asleep."

(2 hours later)

Rick and Evy had fallen asleep on the chair in Alex's room. Evy stirred and looked over at her son.

"Rick! He's asleep!" She whispered.

Quietly, they both headed for the door.

"Hello Everybody!!!" Jonathan came barging into the room, making Baby Alex wake and cry.

"Jonathan!!!" They yelled at him with angry faces.

He ignored them and walked over to his nephew. He started pulling his crib out the door.

"Come, Big Al, you can stay in my room. Let your parents sleep."

"Oh thank you, Jonathan!" Evy exclaimed.

(Later, in Jonathans room)

"Look, Al," he was telling his nephew, "It's already 12am. GO TO SLEEP!"

Alex just laughed.

His uncle got down on his knees in front of the crib. "Please!!! What do you want from me?!"

This made the baby laugh harder.

Jon got back up and took Baby Alex in his arms.

"A warm bath always helps me sleep."

(In the downstairs bathroom)

Jonathan had Alex in the tub, covered with bubbles.

He picked up the toy off the counter.

"Here, Big Al, here's your rubber ducky."

The baby took the duck, and splashed it against the water, splashing soap in his uncle's right eye.

"AHH!!!" Jonathan screamed as he clutched his eye with both hands. He started to run around in circles, screaming at the pain in his eye.

He reached and filled the sink with water, while jumping up and down. He reached down and put his face in the water.

When he came back up, he was gasping for air.

By now, Alex was laughing hysterically.

"What's SO funny?!" Jon asked him as he picked him up in a towel. The tiny tot wrapped his arms around his uncle's neck and kissed him on the cheek.

Jonathan smiled. "Well, for that, I forgive you."

After struggling getting on Alex's diaper, which the little one thought was really amusing, Jonathan plopped down on his bed. It was already 2am and he was exhausted.

"What does your parents feed you?!" Jon asked the baby. "I don't think you ever sleep."

Rick walked into the room the next morning and found his brother-in-law sprawled across the floor on his stomach, asleep, along with his son sitting on his back. Seeing his Dad, he crawled over to Rick.

"Come on, Buddy." He said as he picked him up. Before leaving he turned around, laughed at Jonathan, and left the room.
