The Next Great Adventure

Prologue:

After the events of Ahm-Shere, the O’Connell family had been ready to settle down to a more normal life. However fate had made different plans, and in late June of the next year, Evelyn gave birth to three tiny daughters. No one had expected three at once, and now the family was preparing for their arrival home. The doctor had requested Evelyn to stay at the hospital for a week to make sure the girls were healthy, and after a week she had put her foot down about going home, and the hospital finally granted her wish.

Chapter 1: Three Peas in a Pod

It was an exciting day, because Rick was bringing home Evelyn, and the new babies. Alex had helped Nanna prepare for their arrival, folding nappys the way she had taught him, and cleaning the Parlor of all his toys he had played with during the week of his parents absents. Now he sat at the kitchen table watching Nanna prepare bottles.

“I thought Mum would feed them herself,” Alex said as Nanna got the last bottle prepared and put in the refrigerator. Nanna looked at her young charge and smiled.

“I think your mum will do the best that she can, but three hungry babies to feed at once is a task difficult even for someone as determined as your mum. She hasn’t gotten much rest, and for the next few days she will do just that, so we need to help out,” Nanna explained.

“Will I get to feed them?” he asked. Nanna smiled

“I think we can teach you how to do that,” she replied, which brought a smile to his face. Alex got up then, deciding to wait outside until they arrived. It was another hot summer day, and he chose to wait for them on the front porch petting Cleo who was taking a siesta on the wall surrounding the porch.

“Well girl we get to have three babies, so perhaps you should go hide for a few years because we are going to be extremely busy,” Alex said. Cleo slept on, even when Alex saw the car pull up. Quickly he descended the few steps to the drive and ran to his fathers side of the car as Rick stopped in front of the house. In the back, Evelyn sat asleep and next to her was a basket bed.

“Hey pal,” Rick whispered as Alex opened the door for him.

“Mum doesn’t look good,” Alex said, not used to seeing her in such a fragile state.

“She just needs to sleep in her own bed. After you were born, we had to get her to rest for a few weeks before she finally began to be herself,” Rick replied. Alex got the back door open on his fathers side, and watched as he lifted his mum out which woke her.

“I will walk,” she said softly resting her head against his chest.

“Why don’t you let me do the walking,” he said smiling as Nanna came out of the house ready to asssist. Once she was at the car Rick took Evelyn inside.

“How will we get all three of them inside?” Alex asked, then watched as Nanna put a blanket over the basket bed and lifted it out with all three girls snug inside.

“Will you get your mum’s satchels?” she asked. He did that without a second thought, and followed his Nanna inside, then upstairs to his sisters room, and watched her put the basket bed in one of the three cribs that had been purchased after the birth of the girls.

“Let’s let them sleep,” she said softly. Alex nodded and they left.

“What do we do now?” Alex asked, He had expected to be doing more with them, like feeding them bottles or changing nappys.

“For a while Alex, they will sleep most of the time, though your father tells me that Elizabeth wakes up more at night. We just have to give them time to adjust,” she explained as the two of them went downstairs. Rick was there at his desk writing something.

“Hey dad,” Alex said going over to him. Rick looked up from his writing, and put his pen down.

“I’m sorry mum and I haven’t been around much,” he said feeling guilty for hardly seeing his son the previous few days. Alex nodded.

“Don’t worry dad, Nanna and I have had a great time. I showed her how to play poker, but you can’t tell her I said, or she will ground me for a month,” Alex whispered. Rick chuckled and ruffled his hair.

Upstairs, Evie came awake hearing one or more of her daughters crying, and painfully managed to get up. She hadn’t had any problems having them, but the fact that she had delivered three babies had taken a great deal out of her, and she was still sore. After taking a moment to let her body adjust to standing, Evie walked down the hall to their room and opened the door. Only one baby was crying, and she quickly moved to the crib lifting Elizabeth out.

“Shhh, let’s not wake your sisters,” Evie said rubbing her back. Her cries continued as they walked out of the room, and as they approached the master bedroom, Rick came with Alex behind him.

“We should have listened for them,” he said feeling bad that she had gotten up on her own. Evie however would have none of that.

“You can’t be everywhere at once darling, and this little one is hungry,” Evie said as she settled down in the rocking chair. Elizabeth nursed and the cries stopped instantly.

“Will she stay awake once you feed her?” Alex asked. He knew what Nanna had said to him, but he still wanted to play with his sisters. Already Elizabeth’s eyes were shut, and Evie reached out moving his long bangs out of his face.

“You need a hair cut,” she said. Alex backed away into Rick.

“I want it too look like dads hair,” he said hoping his father would defend him. With Alex at a private school, and with school starting in another month, having his hair like Rick’s was not a possibility. The school had a dress code, and one part of that was short hair for the boys. Evie pointed that out as she lifted her now sleeping daughter against her shoulder for a burp.

“I’m not sure school would like that.” A frown creased his face, and he sighed.

“Just until school starts?” he asked. Evie smiled and nodded her head, and Alex grinned from ear to ear. Before anything more could be said Elizabeth gave a good burp, which made Alex laugh.

“She’s deffinantly and O’Connell,” he said. Rick chuckled at that and Evie caught the gleam in his eyes and shot him a look. He respectfully decided not to tell Alex how his mum had gotten so drunk one night at Hamunaptra that she did a few very un-lady like things. Once Elizabeth had been fed and burped, Rick took her to the cradle they had for all three girls close to their bed and placed her on her side.

“Mum when will they do more than just sleep?” Alex asked, disappointment evident in his voice. Evelyn took his hand and pulled him closer and he sat beside her in the rocking chair.

“It will be a while before they are ready to do more than sleep and eat, but not too long,” she said.

“I missed you.” Evelyn kissed the top of his head.

“I missed you too baby.” Rick left to check on their other two girls finding both of them still asleep. When he walked back in their room, Evelyn and Alex had fallen to sleep in the rocking chair. Carefully Rick carried them both to their bed then sat at his desk continuing to write out birth announcements to their family and friends.
