Title: Goodbye
Author: MBooker
"Thank GOD they made it" Evy
signed.
"Yes..." I shook my head.
I was glad Rick and Alex made it. I
would hate to lose my nephew. I don't know what Evy would have done if that
bracelet had sucked the life out of Alex. She would have lost it no doubt. Evy
loves him so much. And I do too. He is, after all, my only sister's only child.
He's a special little guy. He's my little partner in crime when Evy and Rick
aren't around. We get into all sorts of trouble but we have big fun. I taught
him how to play cards when he was only 5 and Evy was ready to put my head on
the chopping block. Alex was a fast learner and after a while he was beating
me! We played for candy drops since he hadn't come into his inheritance yet and
I had spent all of mine and my Hamunaptra treasure was stolen by that
unscrupulous fellow.
"Yes" my attention turned
from the former peril of Alex to the pyramid of gold that stood in front of me.
Ahhhh! I thought, I'm rich again! Yes... yes... yes... RICH, RICH, RICH!
Then I heard Evy. That black haired
wench was... argh! What?! OH No! That blasted cursed mummy... ut oh! Then I was
face down in the dirt. I heard Rick yelling and when I looked up I saw Evy
falling... oh my god! EVY!
"JONATHAN!" Rick yelled and I
leaped up. "JONATHAN!" I ran toward my sister. "Get him! Get
him! Take him!" Rick yelled.
"Come on Alex" I reached for
him and pulled him close. "Your mother's going to be fine. She's going to
be fine" I lied to my nephew. I lie to everybody. But this is one time I
wish I were telling the truth.
I looked at Alex, afraid to look over
at my sister. Sadness covered his face as he watched his mother. Then I looked
over to see Evy struggling... struggling to hold on to life. My god! My sister
was dying. I held on to Alex a little tighter hoping to hold on to her. I
didn't want her to leave me. She was my only sister. She was the only person
who knew all about me and loved me anyway. What would I do without her?
"Noooooooo!" Rick cried and I
knew. Evy was... Evy was gone.
I grabbed Alex and we held on to each
other. Evy was gone. Alex cried on my shoulder and I wanted to cry on his but
this time I had to be strong. Strong for Alex. I knew Evy would want it that
way. I don't know how long we held each other before Rick called Alex.
"Alex" he said in a grim
voice.
Alex lifted his head and looked at his
father. His eyes were red from crying and his face was wet from tears. Alex
went to his father and they embraced. I looked over at Evy and went to her. I
took her hand and held it tight. I didn't want to let her go. She looked so
peaceful and I knew she was in a better place. But that didn't help my grieving
soul. A tear slid down my cheek for my sister. I was missing her already. I
would have given that scepter back to Izzy if she would open her eyes. I would
have given that gold pyramid just to hear her nag me about all my shortcomings.
I would give anything for her to come back. I wanted to shake her and tell her
to wake up. We needed her - Rick, Alex and I. We couldn't get along without her.
She knew everything else so why didn't she know that?
"I love you Jonathan" I heard
Evy say.
She told me that on her wedding day
when I gave her away. It was hard to let her go that day. And it was hard to
let her go now.
"I love too you baby sister"
I said as another tear slid down my cheek. "Goodbye."
