Summary: This is the Triplets a little older, um three to be presise,
and of the impact of the coming war on the O'Connells, and where it
will take all of them. I know Dylan is doing something to this
effect, and I had intended to do this but trust me when I say mine is
going to be different, and shouldn't be anything like that story.
Changing Times
Chapter 1: Talk of a Move
Monday mornings were universal for being slow days, and with any
morning, the first one's up in the O'Connell home were the girls.
Elizabeth woke first, still sucking on her thumb. After laying in
bed letting herself wake up, she sat up in the big girl bed she
shared with her sisters stretching. All of their lives they had
shared a bed, not sleeping well separate. She rubbed her eyes, then
turned to look at Louisa, who had slept beside her this time.
Carefully Elizabeth lay beside her again and kissed her nose.
"Up now," she said. After another kiss Louisa roused and
opened her
eyes.
"Go get Awek up," she said. They giggled, then Elizabeth
moved away
from Louisa, and crawled on the other side of Rebecca, laying behind
her. Louisa who was facing her, gave her a kiss, while Elizabeth
rubbed her back, and after a little bit she also woke up.
"Comen waken Awek," Louisa told her.
"Up Awek," Rebecca said, and they all three crawled to the end
of
their bed. Elizabeth turned on her belly, and slid feet first until
she was on the ground, then waited for her sisters. When they got
down, all three walked across the hall to big brothers room. All
three of them still looked like Evelyn, and had their hair put up in
little fabric pieces too keep their hair in curls. They had on their
long flowing nighties, Louisa in a light blue one, Elizabeth in a
light pink one, and Rebecca in a light yellow one, all with short
sleeves that puffed, and had lace around the edges of them. The
fronts of their nighties had embroidered animals. Louisa's had
kittens on it, Rebecca's butterflies, and Elizabeth's had little
Ducks. Once in brother's room, Louisa climbed on the bed first from
the bottom, crawling up to lay next to him with her face facing him.
Elizabeth lay on the other side of him, and Rebecca crawled on his
back as he was laying stomach down.
"Awek up got cool," Louisa said giving him a kiss on his
nose. Alex
mumbled something and then opened his eyes.
"Louisa, brother doesn't have to get up for school this early,"
Alex
said.
"No cool, pay wif us," she said and kissed him again. Try
as he
may, Alex couldn't get mad at them, and after a little more coaxing
got up with them. He knew it was early because the sun wasn't even
up yet, and he had plans to take them in to his parents. He did love
them, but he wanted sleep, and Mum and dad were better about getting
them to go back to sleep than he was.
"Come on let's go wake mummy and daddy," Alex said.
"No wan you pay if us," Rebecca said. The other two
nodded, and
Alex had to think of a way to get them to leave so he could get their
parents up.
"Okay we will play hide and seek. You go hide in your room and I
will come find you." he said. They all ran out, and once they
were
gone Alex went down the hall to the end room, and listened. He
didn't hear any noise, and walked in. Fortunately they were asleep,
however not for long.
"Mum?" Alex said going to her side of the bed.
"What's wrong?" Evie said sitting up, waking Rick.
"Their up," Alex said yawning.
"Are they in your room or theirs?" Rick asked as both he and
Evelyn
got out of bed.
"Theirs," Alex said, then headed back to his room.
In their room, Louisa, Rebecca, and Elizabeth hid under the covers of
their bed, though on the floor, and giggled when they heard the door
open.
"Evie do you see the girls?" Rick asked.
"Noooo," Elizabeth yelled as she crawled out from under the
blanket.
"Awek pay us," she said crossing her arms over her chest, looking
like a mini version of Evelyn.
"Elizabeth the sun is still in bed," Rick said trying to make
her
see, but she didn't, and started to run out of their room. Rick
caught her and tossed her in the air and she screamed. Rebecca and
Louisa crawled out from under the blanket and also tried to make a
get away and in a moment all three of them were screaming. Rick lay
Elizabeth in bed and she started to cry, and so did Louisa and
Rebecca when Evelyn laid them down, until she crawled in with them,
then they all cuddled against her.
"Mummy not go back seepen," Louisa said putting her fingers in
her
mouth. Rebecca crawled to the side of the bed wanting daddy, and
Rick lifted her off, and carried her to the rocking chair. She lay
cradled in his arms, sucking on her bent middle finger, and her eyes
fluttered shut before too long. He smiled as Evelyn slipped out of
the bed. Then he stood and carried Rebecca to her bed and placed her
where Evie had been laying. They got the cover off of the floor and
put it over them, then hand in hand went back to their own bed.
Though most of his time was spent at home, Rick still ran the
shipping business with Sam, and knew things with the war were getting
serious when the British forces contracted with their company for
Destroyer ships to be built. When Rick went in later that Monday
morning, Sam was waiting for him.
"Have you heard?" Sam asked.
"What?" Rick responded back, as he settled in his chair.
"The British forces have been put on high alert because the Nazis are
going to start bombing.
"I heard, and I don't think it will happen, not for a while at
least," Rick said though he was starting to get nervous for a great
number of reasons. One was Alex, though he was only thirteen right
now, he would be fifteen in a few years, and Rick worried about him
having to fight in the war. The other was for himself. His business
with the legion was done, but he could still be asked to fight, and
it terrified him to leave Evie, and his kids without him there to
protect them.
"Hey you okay?" Sam asked.
"Yeah sorry just thinking is all," Rick responded.
"Me too. I think Amy and I might head back to the
States," Sam
said. Rick nodded, still in thought, and Sam left him.
On the home front, Evelyn and the girls were in the kitchen baking a
cake for Rick's birthday, which was in a few days. Evelyn still
worked at the museum, but not as much, wanting to spend time with her
family especially with all that was going on in the war. Growing up
as a child she remembered all the talk of the first World War, and
guessed now that it was for that reason, that her family spent so
much time in Egypt during those times on digs.
"Mummy eat now," Louisa said, her face spattered with dust from
the
flour. Rebecca and Elizabeth had flour on their face, and their
hair, and Evie smiled.
"We have to let the cake bake first my angels," Evie said as
she
poured the batter into the two pans. The girls watched as she put
the cake in the ovens, then Evelyn got a washcloth and wet it with
warm water, and walked over to her girls realizing she needed more
than just the washcloth to get them clean.
"Why don't we got take a bath." They all agreed to that, and
ran up
the stairs with Evelyn moving fast behind them. Marie, she knew,
would watch the cakes, and that would give her time to wash the girls
and herself. In her bathroom, Evelyn got the bath running.
"Mummy got to have bubbles too," Rebecca said.
"You are right," Evie said as she got out her bottle of
lavender
scented bubble bath. She poured in what she needed, then got the
girls out of their dresses. They all had on matching dresses today,
all light purple flowing gowns that had short sleeves and little
pressed on flowers all over the material. Evie got them all
undressed and into the tub, then got her own cloths off and stepped
in behind Elizabeth.
"Mummy why got those?" Elizabeth asked pointing to her breasts.
"All mummy's have those," Evelyn said as she got a cup and started
to wet Elizabeth's hair. While Elizabeth got washed first, Louisa
and Rebecca sat facing one another playing with their rubber ducks.
"Quack Quack," Louisa said as she bumped her duck into
Rebecca's.
"Uh oh," Rebecca said and made it turn over, which made both of
them
laugh.
"I want to play too," Elizabeth said pouting as Evelyn stood
her up
and began to soap down her body.
"You may in just one moment," Evie reassured as she got her
baby
clean. Once she was, Rebecca was the next one to be washed, and
Elizabeth took her place playing house with the Ducks, and her sister.
Lunch time at school was always time for talk, and Alex sat with Max
and Byron discussing the war.
"Do you think you will fight when you're old enough?" Byron asked
both of the boys.
"Yeah I say we defend our country of the Nazis, they are already
working to take over all of Europe, we can't let them take over our
lives," Max said. Only Alex didn't answer. While the
Nazis were a
threat to reckon with, he could think of foes far worse, and he had
no desire to fight.
"What about you Al?" Max asked. To go along with them, he
agreed
that he would fight, and then the be rang for them to go in and start
the last few classes of the day.
When Rick arrived home for lunch the Kitchen had been cleaned, and
the cake was hidden in the back of the refrigerator. Marie had stew
waiting, and Evelyn stood from the table and kissed him.
"Where are my girls?" he asked.
"Down for their naps I hope," Evelyn said settling back in her
seat.
"How was work?" she asked. Rick sighed, and after serving
them,
Marie left to sit upstairs with the girls in case they woke up.
"I haven't told you this yet, but the British forces have contracted
with us to build war ships, numbered in the thousands," Rick
informed. Evelyn had known something like this would happen, but she
didn't think it would be so soon.
"What do we do?" Rick reached out and took her hand.
"Evie I love living here, but with Hitler moving through Europe like
a plague, I just don't think it's safe for us to stay, not with three
babies, and not with Alex nearing the age of getting asked to
fight," Rick said. She rubbed his hand in hers.
"Where do you think we will go?" she asked almost in tears.
Rick
stood then and walked over to her chair, pulling her into his arms.
"I talked to Jake today, and he told me he never sold my fathers
land, I know its not England but Montana at least for the time being
seems like a pretty safe bet," Rick said kissing the top of
her
head.
"Then I want to take all of our things with us. I don't want someone
to come in here and take our things," she said and started to
cry.
Rick scooted her chair out and sat down then settled her on his lap.
"We'll be all right baby, I swear it," Rick said. After a
few
moments she composed herself.
"Then I guess I have some packing to do. Are we going to build a
house?" she asked.
"I think thats a good idea. I'll get Jake to Hire out some
men. DO
you want a big place?" She nodded.
"And room for the horses," She said not willing to leave
anything
behind. Rick knew he had a great deal of work to do to get passage,
and to get things in order at the his business. He had been offered
a great deal of money from the British forces for their business, and
now he was ready to sell
