Summary: This is set after TMR, about a year after to be exact, and the O'Connells are about to have a new addition added to their family. Isn't what you may think so read and hope you like it.

Note: I got a request to do this idea from Evy, and to her, its very doable, and I thank you for giving me another idea to write. To my reading Audience: I've read the Mary Sue reviews, and yeah this might be one of those so if you don't like them then go else where. I am going to do as good a job as I can in adding this Character to the family, and not focusing to much on her, but if I do its

part of the creative process.

Prologue

It had been a year since the events of Ahm-Shere, and life for the O'Connells had fallen into a more normal pace. Evelyn was the Curator at the British Museum, and successful at making that museum very popular, with new exhibits, and the like, to bring in as many people as possible to learn about times past.

Jonathan had sold his Diamond, and opened up his own Resort Casino, very classy, to attract the people with the most money. It was a joint venture, with he and Rick running things. Rick's presence was more on the sidelines to make sure the money flowed in the right direction per Evelyn's request. Aside from helping Jonathan with things, Rick was happy to be at home and take care of Alex, who

was now 9, and back in school. Life for Alex was better now that the dreams had finally stopped, though he was still afraid of the dark, so they left a candle burning on his bedside table to help with that. One could say that life was perfect for them, almost boring, and if fate had its way, things for the O'Connells would be getting shaken up very soon.

Chapter: 1 Thief in the night.

It was a terrible thing not to be loved, but Emma hadn't known love for a very long time. She had been left in an orphanage just outside of London. It wasn't a bad place to be, but the 13 year old girl longed to be free, and one night she left. She packed her rucksack with only the things she needed, and walked out.

Her orphanage was in a little Village 20 miles from London, and she felt like she had walked for and eternity, following one of the main roads that led into the large city. As she walked and looked around she noticed that there was a turn off of the main road, and decided to see where it led. It wasn't long before she came to a very large house. It looked like the Queen herself lived there. Emma ran up to one of the front windows and looked in, seeing allot of things that she could take and sell for money that she would need to survive.

She tried the front door, knowing it would be locked, and then went around to the side of the house, and tried the door there. It was also locked, which meant she would have to break a window, and she wasn't sure that was such a good thing. There had to be an easier way to do things. Then she heard a car pulling up the drive, and ran behind a stone pillar. The car was parked fairly close to the side door, and a man stepped out with a pretty lady on his arm. He lifted

the thatch rug and took out a key opening the door, and then set the key back in its spot. Emma waited for a while, then ran and got into the house fairly easy.

There were two ways to go, upstairs where she heard music playing, or down a dark hallway. She chose the dark hallway, and felt like she was in a maze, but she finally got into the main part of the house.

"Who lives here," she said softly. She went into the main parlor and to the chess table picking up one of the pieces which as made out of Ivory. Carefully she set her rucksack down, and opened it putting into it all of the chess pieces.

This was better than Christmas, she thought to herself. As she continued to put things in her sack. She didn't know that she had been discovered. Alex had decided to come down for a late nights snack, when he spotted her, only being dark he didn't know it was a her, and he ran back upstairs, to his parents room

"DAD wake up theres really bad people in here hurry dad." Alex was frantic now, and Rick sat up lifting him onto the bed.

"Alex, were safe," Rick told him. Then to contradict that statement, they heard a thump.

"I told you so," Alex said hiding his face against his mums side. Evelyn held him close, wanting to go with Rick, but right now Alex needed her most. As they snuggled, Rick dressed in his slacks and got a gun out of his cabinet that he kept locked, then went out of the room, down the hall, and out to the stairs. He spotted the intruder putting a vase into a rucksack. Carefully he descended the

steps, and when he got to the bottom he cocked his gun.

It was the click of a gun that got Emma's full attention. She turned and found a shadow standing there, then light came on and she hid her eyes. Rick was very suprised to find that Alex's "Bad people," was just a young girl. He put his gun down.

"I'll just go without your stuff," she said softly terrified by him. There was not much she remembered about her life before the orphanage, but what she could recall was that men had not been nice to her, and since, she had never trusted them. Rick took a step toward her and she screamed and ran behind a couch.

Upstairs Evelyn heard the scream.

"Alex can you sit here and let me go see what's going on?" He nodded and after a reassuring hug and kiss, Evelyn left. She hurried downstairs and found Rick looking at the couch.

"What's happening?"

"Our intruder is a young girl, and I'm thinking she isn't fond of men." Evelyn approached slowly.

"Stop," came the frightened voice. Evelyn did.

"I'm not going to harm you." She heard a heavy sigh, then the girl stepped out. She had blond hair, and the most deep blue eyes Evy had ever seen. She was also very dirty, wearing a ripped dress, and shoes that were tattered.

"I'll be going now," Emma said.

"Where will you go?" Evleyn asked, staying where she was.

"I have friends," Emma lied. That didn't do much to convince either Rick or Evelyn.

"I'm sorry, but we can't let you go like this," came Evelyn's soft reply.

"I don't want to go back to where I was. I was going to go on a ship maybe to America," she said trying to get out of this place. She noticed a young boy come to stand beside the man.

"She could stay with us," Alex said looking up at his father. For now Alex was right, there wasn't much to do in the middle of the night.

"Would you do that," Evelyn asked her. Emma thought for a moment. A nice bed to sleep in would make her feel better. She nodded, but backed up when Evelyn approached her.

"I'm sorry, if you'll follow me, I'll show you to your room." She nodded and was glad that the man and the boy went up before them. They went down a passage, and she watched the man and the boy go into a room on the right. The woman led her into a room across from the boys. It was very beautiful, with a four post Canopy bed, and elegant furnishings.

"My name is Evelyn," Evelyn said to her guest.

"This was my room when I was growing up, and if I'm right I should have a nightgown that will fit you. Evelyn went to one of the drawers and pulled out a long soft flannel nightgown, and laid it on the bed.

"There is a bathroom in there," she opened a door toward the back of the room and turned on the lights. Curios, Emma walked over to where Evelyn stood and looked it.

"It's very pretty here," she said shyly

"Thank you. Do you have a name?"

"Emma," she responded.

"Can I help with anything?" offered Evy.

"No I'll manage, thanks." Hesitantly Evelyn left her, not sure about leaving her alone, but they had to give her a the benefit of the doubt. Across the way she went into her son's room. Alex was asleep against his dad's chest.

"He was pretty frightened," Rick whispered as he got up. He pulled a blanket over his son's body, and he and Evelyn gave him a gently kiss before going out.

"So how is our company?" That was questionable.

"I'm not sure about trusting her," Evelyn admitted. Rick took her into his arms.

"I know, I could camp out here tonight." he suggested. She shook her head.

"We will have to trust that she will do the right thing." They went back to their room not knowing that Emma had heard every word. Before hearing them, she had planned to go with what she had taken, but then hearing Evelyn's response about trust, made her change her mind. Someone trusted her, and that was enough to put some warmth in her empty heart.

Note: Okay more to come. I just wrote, and this is what came out, I hope you guys don't pound me for adding someone into the main group, but I think Emma will be fun. You just have to get to know her some before you pass judgment on her and me.

Chapter 2: Friends and Family

It was the realization that last night was not a dream, that woke Emma from her goodnights sleep. She couldn't believe she had stayed, and now she wondered why.

As she pondered this someone knocked on her door.

"Come in," she said softly. The boy came in, still dressed in his Pajamas.

"I'm Alex," He said, staying where he was.

"I'm Emma," came her reply. For a moment nothing was said between either of them, then Alex started.

"It's still early, but I like getting up before everyone else. If you want too I'll show you around." She slipped out of bed, and walked over to where he stood. He was pretty much as tall as she was, but that wasn't saying allot, she was only 4'8, and had always been small. They walked out into the hall, and down the stairs to the kitchen.

"Do you want to have some breakfast?" Alex asked his new friend.

"Sure, I can make eggs you know." Alex got what she needed out of the Fridge, and then got out the skillet.

"Get some bacon, and ham and I'll fry that up too," She said. Alex did what she told him, and in a few minutes things were going pretty good.

"Where did you learn to do all this?" Emma smiled

"Well we took turns in the orphanage, and we used to have midnight raids for food." That sounded like great fun to Alex.

"We could do that tonight if you want too."

"I likely won't be here, I doubt your parents want to deal with me." Alex frowned at that. He was lonely, now that Uncle John was always at his Casino, and having Emma around might actually be fun. Neither were watching the stove to well, and grease splattered out, and the flame shot up.

"Oh my god," Alex said. Emma took a towel and hit at it, and smoke went all over the place, but she did get out the flame.

"So much for breakfast," Emma said sorrowfully. She didn't want to make them mad at her.

"We can clean it up before mum and dad get up." Alex got what they needed, and they cleaned everything up, then made Eggs and toast.

It was the faint smell of smoke that woke Evelyn first. She was laying against her husbands chest, comfortable.

"Rick I smell something burning." Rick sniffed and sat up. Both of them dressed in a hurry, and ran downstairs where the smell was worse. In the kitchen, they found Alex and Emma eating breakfast.

"What happened here?" Rick asked none to pleased. Alex knew he wasn't supposed to operate the stove himself. Emma's eyes got very big, afraid for her new friend.

"It's not a big deal dad, we made our own breakfast, and there was a fire, sort of, and well we took care of it," Alex said bravely. Rick closed his eyes and counted to ten.

"Alex you know your not allowed to use the stove alone, and just because you have company doesn't mean the rules bend. Go on to your room." He hesitated.

"But dad we really..." Rick cut him off

"Now!" He said firmly. Alex threw his napkin to the floor and ran out, and Emma got up and ran out as well. Evelyn came over to her husband.

"Rick don't you think you were a little hard on him?"

"He could have burned the house down," Rick defended. Evelyn hugged him, and he held her in his arms.

"He just wants to help, and they didn't burn the house down," she said softly. Rick kissed the top of her head.

"I know Evy, I guess sometimes I remember, still, when he got into my guns, and when he does something this careless, I have a hard time letting go." She understood his fears well. That time had been terrifying, to hear the shot of the gun, and for a split second not knowing if it had killed him.

"I'll go talk to him," Rick said. She nodded and set about making breakfast for them.

In his room Alex lay in his bed crying. He was mad, and frustrated. What was the big deal about using the stove anyway. Emma sat next to him not sure what to say to him, then the door opened and she jumped.

"It's okay. Evelyn is downstairs making more breakfast, and I need to talk to Alex," Rick explained. Emma nodded and ran out. Rick sat down on Alex's bedside, leaned back and gently pulled his son into his arms.

"Alex, I'm sorry I got mad at you." Alex was calming down now.

"Whats the big deal about me operating the stove?" came his shaky response.

"I guess I've always been protective of you, more than I should be. Do you know why I keep most of my guns in the trunk of my car?" Alex shook his head.

"When you were three you found one of my guns in my closet and it went off. Thankfully it didn't hurt you, but you did put a big hole in our wall."

"Wow what did you two do to me?" Alex asked, looking at his dad.

"We told you how dangerous it was, but the point was, then, it really wasn't your fault. I should have put those gun's outside, or someplace you would never have gotten to them. So I guess every since then, is why I'm careful where you are concerned." Alex hugged his dad tight.

"Dad?" Rick kissed the top of his son's head.

"Yes son."

"Can Emma stay with us? She said she was staying in an orphanage, and I don't think thats a good place for her." Rick chuckled.

"I don't know Alex, I'll have to see what mum thinks. Now get dressed, and you two can go out and play." Alex nodded and after a final hug and kiss Rick went downstairs thinking about what Alex had said. The fact that she was an orphan hit close to home for him, and her being 13, and wanting to leave and go in to the big world alone was just like him. When he arrived in the Kitchen Evelyn and Emma were sitting at the table.

"Did you talk to him?" Evelyn asked.

"Yes." Alex ran in then.

"Hey Emma go get dressed and we can go bike riding." He stopped realizing she really didn't have anything much to wear, and looked at his mum for advise.

"Come on Emma, I think I can put together something for you to wear." Emma went willingly with Evelyn, and a few minutes later they returned. Emma had on a soft shirt that was Evy's, and some pants that were Alex's. Her hair was also put up, and the two ran outside racing.

"So what do you think of our guest?" Rick asked wanting to get Evelyn's feel for things.

"She's a sweet girl, frightened. I'm not sure I can imagine what her life is like, not knowing from one day to the next where she will be." Then she realized it was allot like what Rick had been through.

"I guess you know what thats like?" she asked him. He nodded.

"Yes I do. She said she wants to run away, and I'll be truthful with you. There were times after I met you, when I was out on my own that I didn't think I would live to see my next day, and I was a pretty tough kid. I'm not so sure she will survive." Evelyn smiled

"Then maybe she should stay with us. Alex seems to like her, and I don't think it would be hard for us to adopt her," Evelyn said. They both agreed, and as they were finishing breakfast, Alex and Emma came in laughing.

"All right you two settle down," Evelyn told them.

"We need to talk to you both," Rick said. They all went into the parlor.

"Emma, Evelyn and I discussed your situation, and if you will have us, we would like you to be a part of our family." She was totally shocked.

"Say yes Emma," Alex told her.

"Really?" she couldn't believe it.

"Really," Rick said. She nodded and Alex jumped up and down.

"This is so totally cool," Alex said to her.

"Does this mean I have to go to school?" she asked suddenly not so sure. Evelyn came over and sat next to her.

"Not right away. How much schooling have you had?" She shrugged.

"Not very much I'm afraid" Evelyn hugged her.

"Thats all right, we will help you learn what you need to, and maybe at some point you will be ready to go," Evy said looking up at Rick who nodded. So it was settled.

Epilogue

A few months had passed, and Emma was now an official member of the O'Connell family. She had gotten used to Rick fairly quickly, and used to having a mum and a dad. Jonathan she wasn't all that sure of, but time would teach her that he too was harmless and quite funny. For Evelyn, who never thought she would have a daughter, spending time with Emma was treasured. She loved both Alex and Emma

fiercely and would do everything in her power to keep them safe. Now life for the O'Connells was complete, and at least for a while things were blissful, until World War 2 came, but that is another tale.

Note: I hope you guys liked this. yeah its short, and if I get good responses I'll do more Emma Alex stories. As far as World War 2 goes, I know that it hit London pretty hard, and really everyone was effected, but I'm not going to do any fics on that, Anyone else interested in Using Emma ask first please. Thanks.
