Summary: This is the big move from
Cairo to England. What will Alex get into this time?
A New Home.
Chapter 1 : Last days in Cairo
Things were happening fast for the
O'Connells, and for Jonathan. In less than 3 days they would board a ship that
would take them to London England. It was a new adventure for all of them. They
had decided, not to sell their house, and most of the things that were being
packed were smaller things. The house, or manor in London was already
furnished, and Evelyn was sure there would be allot of cleaning that would have
to be done, but she intended to get some help for that. Right now she and Rick
were in their room packing, now that Alex was down for a nap, they could get
more done.
In his room, Alex was not asleep, and
had gotten out of his crib. Now he was getting things they had taken great care
to pack in crates, back out. He completely cleaned out one crate, and was
working on another one when Evelyn passed by.
"Alex no," She said. He
looked up.
"I want me toys out mum," He
told her as she came over to him.
"You are supposed to be
asleep," she said, tired. All of this packing business was for the birds,
and she hoped once they moved to England they would stay put, at least for a
little bit.
"I not seepen," he said
defiantly.
"You most certainly are." She
picked him up, and he started to scream as she laid him down in his bed. Alex
continued to scream, and Evelyn left him shutting the door. When he figued out
she was gone, he started to cry for her, and in a few minutes she came back.
"Come here baby." She picked
him up and he lay his head on her shoulder.
"This is pretty confusing isn't
it?" She sat down with him, and rocked him until he was asleep. After
laying him in his crib, she repacked all of this things, which is where Rick
found her.
"We need to put these down with
the other crates," she said softly. He lifted one, and had her set the
other on top, then they left Alex to sleep.
For Jonathan getting out of Cairo was
sad. He loved his life here, going out until the wee hours of the morning,
gambling, the belly dancers were all his life. Now he sat in a bar having
another shot of bourbon. He had already taken three shots, and for Jonathan
that was enough to make him very happy. He stood up and bumped into a man
making him drop his drink.
"Hey watch yourself."
"I was, " Jonathan said, and
started away, when the man grabbed him and punched him. Jonathan swung and
missed, then one more punch and he was out cold.
At the house everyone was asleep when
the phone rang. Rick got it before it could wake Alex and answered. There was a
girl on the other end, who told him that Jonathan had been in a fight, and need
a ride home. Rick hung up, cursing silently. Evelyn sat up.
"What was all that about?"
"Your brother got beat up, so I'm
going to get him. I won't be long. He came to her side of the bed and kissed
her, then went out of their room, and heard Alex crying. If Jonathan hadn't
have been beat up Rick seriously considered adding to his wounds. He opened the
door and went to the crib.
"Hey big guy go back to
sleep."
"Mum hold," He said. Rick
lifted him out, and carried him back into their room, laying him in the bed
where he cuddled with mum, and went back to sleep.
It was a half hour later when Rick and
Jonathan arrived home. Jonathan was pretty drunk, and stumbled as they walked
inside. Evelyn was there with coffee, waiting, and Rick left them.
"Honestly Jonathan why do you do
this?" She came and rubbed some aloe on the cut over his eye and he
flinched.
"Don't need to yell," He told
her in a slurred voice. She helped him take some sips of coffee, then helped
him into his room where she got his shoes, and socks off, and helped him lay
down in bed. She pulled the covers over him, standing there for a moment.
Sometimes it was like she had two children to raise. As she walked out, she
turned off the light, then went upstairs finding Alex's door open. She heard
Ricks voice and smiled.
"Did princess happy," Alex
mumbled.
"The princess is always the one
who lives happily ever after" Rick told him leaning in and kissing his
little nose.
"Now go to sleep." Alex
nodded and rolled onto his tummy, already asleep. When Rick turned, he jumped,
not expecting Evelyn to be standing there. He came over to her and lifted her
into his arms.
"Is Jonathan all right?" Rick
asked as he carried he back into their room.
"He will be in the morning. I'm
not sure he really wants to go, but he doesn't seem to want to stay here alone
either." Rick silenced her with a kiss, and for now nothing more was said.
They last day in Cairo was a Sunday,
and Jonathan had offered to keep Alex, as a sort of pay back for them coming to
bail him out at the bar the other night. Now at home, Alex was pulling his
camel around the room,. around all the crates, while Jonathan picked up his
blocks. They were trying to keep things in order, as best they could, for the
big move tomorrow, and with Alex it was not an easy task. He got tired of
playing with his camel and spotted Cleo, their cat, going under one of the
chairs.
"Ceo." Alex ran to the chair,
and lay on his belly looking under at her. She would be going with them, and
was terrified of things right now.
"Out now," he said reaching
for her. She swiped at him and Alex kept poking at her, so she bit his finger.
It was not hard enough to break the skin, but enough to get his attention. Alex
didn't cry, but he did leave her alone.
"Unca John out now," Alex
demanded. Jonathan who had just finished picking up the last of the blocks was
sitting on the couch.
"I say Alex, why dont we read a
story."
"No go out." he came over and
tugged on his Uncles hand, and Jonathan sighed.
"Where should we go partner?"
"See da cats." So after
locking the house the two set out to find the cats.
At their favorite Cafe, Rick and Evelyn
shared a nice lunch together.
"So are you ready for life in
England," Rick asked her. She took a sip of her tea, and nodded.
"I think it will be a good change
for us." She had been saying that since they had decided to move, and Rick
guessed it was to convince herself.
"Because you know we could just
stay here." It was tempting to do so, but the change really would be good
for all of them, and now that Alex was here proritys had changed for both of
them. In England, when Alex was older, he would get a better education there,
and that was a big reason for both of them to go. Once they had finished their
lunch, they headed off for the market for one last jaunt.
Alex had gotten away from his Uncle,
who was chasing him through the crowed. He wasn't watching where he was going and
bumped into his daddy who lifted him into the air.
"Are you giving Uncle John a hard
time?" Alex struggled to be put down, but Rick wouldn't do that.
"Alex, you have to hold either my
hand or your mum's hand."
"No don't got to do dat," He
said.
"Then you get to stay up
here." Alex tried to kick, but Rick held him still, and finally he gave up
and settled down.
"I hold hand?" Rick set him
down, and before he could get his hand, Alex took off again, this time with
three adults after him. The little boy, being little, ducked through the crowds
thinking this was a game. He ran and stepped on a slick spot and fell sliding
and skinning his knees and arms. Alex screamed and cried, and Evelyn got to him
first picking him up.
"Your all right, I know it
hurts" He held onto her and cried as though his heart would break. As she
stood, Rick and Jonathan caught up to them.
"We need to get him a
harness," Jonathan muttered. Rick agreed, and they set off for home.
Night fell, their last night in Cairo.
Alex had fallen asleep on their bed, and they decided to let him stay there.
Right now Rick and Evelyn sat on their little patio.
"I can't believe its
tomorrow," Evelyn said. Rick held her closer.
"I know. In a way I'm going to
miss this old place." She looked up at him., surprise showing on her face.
"I thought you hated it
here." He smiled down at her.
"I did once, then one day you
walked into my life and that all changed," He said. She snugged against
him, and they stayed that way for a while before going up to bed, to sleep
their last night in Cairo.

Chapter 2: The Trip to England
It had been two days since the ship had
left Giza Port, and everyone was much more relaxed. Rick had gotten them two
suites, one for he, Evelyn, and Alex, and a smaller one for Jonathan. Both of
the suites had an adjoined balcony, where they would have their meals each day.
Right now it was early morning,, and as he had for the past two days on the
ship, Alex was the first to get up. He slept in his playpen at night, and for
his naps, and could get out of it just as easily
as he could his crib. Now he was up,
and after climbing out of his playpen, he ran over to where Cleo was laying, on
one of the couches. The cat looked up at him watching, and waiting. Alex
reached out a hand, and her ears went back and she hissed at him.
"Shh not hurt oo," He said.
She relaxed a little and Alex pet her head, and she started to purr. This was
exciting to Alex, and he ran to his parents bed.
"Mum up Ceo like me," Alex
said pulling on Evelyn's hand.
"Is it really morning," Rick
mumbled. She opened her eyes, finding light filter through the shutters on the
window.
"I believe that it is."
"Mum up now, " Alex demanded.
"Alex can you say please?"
Evleyn said, trying to teach him not to be so demanding.
"Pease up now pease" Evelyn
reached down and lifted Alex on to their bed, and he snuggled up with them. He
looked at daddy's sleeping face and reached out touching his nose. Rick
growled, and Alex giggled. When he did it again Rick nibbled his fingers.
"Daddy funny," Alex said
through his laughter. Alex snuggled closer to his father and yawned, which made
his daddy open his eyes.
"Are you still sleepy."
"No not," Alex said.
Generally he would get up but he lay in his fathers arms quietly. Evelyn who
had gotten up to get him a bottle came back to the bed noticing her husbands
concern.
"What is it." Alex rolled
over then.
"Mine," He reached for his
bottle, something he only got at night or when he was in bed. The rest of the
time he used a cup.
"He's just being still, thats not
like him," Rick said. Evelyn lay down with them.
"It's been a long week for all of
us," She had kissing her son's forehead. He wasn't hot, and as he drank
his bottle he closed his eyes. Rick had a point. Alex was never this still, and
when he fell asleep, both of them were a little worried, and hoped that it was
just the fact that his sleep schedule had been knocked of kilter.
It was a little later when Jonathan
walked out on deck, finding noone out, which surprised him. He walked to his
sister and Rick's door and gave a light knock, and in a moment Rick answered.
"Whats wrong?
"We think Alex is coming down with
something," Rick said. That was news, because aside from getting teeth in,
Alex had not been sick a day in his life.
"Do you want me to bring a
doctor?" Rick shook his head.
"We don't know for sure, he may
just be tired. Will you bring breakfast?" That Jonathan did with no
problem, and Rick closed the door going over to the couch where Evelyn was
writing.
"How is your volume coming
along," he refereed to the book she was writing on The Curses of the
Pharaohs. Evelyn looked up.
I hope to have it finished by the time
we get to England. They had another 5 days of sailing to endure. A knock at the
outer door alerted them, that Jonathan had arrived with breakfast. Rick let him
in, and he set it on one of the tables.
"Well I'll be on deck if you need
me." Rick thanked him, then he and Evelyn sat down to a quiet meal.
"So what should we do today?"
Rick asked.
"Mmm, I was thinking another day
on the deck would be good. Alex had a good time playing with those little boys.
Rick smiled. Yesterday they had met a family with four boys all under the age
of six. Rick couldn't imagine having that many children, but Alex had the time
of his life, chasing after them, and playing games. When they finished Evelyn
went to the bed and knelt down and kissed Alex's cheek. He stirred and opened
his eyes.
"Mum hold," he said in a
sleepy voice. Evelyn lifted him on to her lap and rocked.
"Dink,"Alex said. He saw dad
with a cup, and in a moment Rick came over and placed it in his hands. Alex
took a sip, then pushed it away, laying is head back against his mum's chest.
"Do you want to get dressed so we
can go play?" Evelyn asked trying to coax him into a more wakeful state.
"No," He said
"Rock." She wished for the
life of them that they would have brought at least one of the rocking chairs,
but made do without one. He went back to sleep. After she put him back in their
bed, she went over to Rick
"I think we need to have someone
come look in on him," She said.
"I'll go find the ships
doctor." She nodded, trying not to worry. There were so many things Alex
could get, the biggest two fears were Smallpox and Polio.
At lunch Jonathan had run out of money,
out of luck. He really needed to practice up, so he could start winning things
back he had lost. As he passed Rick and Evy's suite, he decided to check in,
and knocked on the door. This time
Evelyn answered.
"How's Alex?"
"He has an ear infection,"
She said softly.
"Not a good thing." She shook
her head.
"The doctor game him a shot, so I
hope that will make him feel better." Jonathan nodded.
"Listen why don't you and Rick get
out and go, let me sit in here with him," Jonathan offered. She let him
in, and Rick who was sitting on the couch reading, looked up as she came over
to him.
"Shall we go for a walk. Jonathan
said he would stay here," She told her husband. Rick stood and after
getting her sweater, she and Rick left. It was dimly lit in the room, and
Jonathan sat down pulling a table close to where he sat, and got out a deck of
cards, dealing out two hands for poker, and practiced his game a bit. Then he
heard Alex start to whimper, and went over to him.
"Hey partner," Alex opened
his eyes.
"Where mum?"
"She and your dad went out for a
little walk.
"Want mum," he started to
cry, and Jonathan felt bed. He slid into bed with Alex and comforted him as
best as he knew how.
"Did I tell you the story about my
pony when I was little." Alex had snuggled against him.
"Pony fowed oo oer da fence,"
Alex said.
"Yes he did, and I got right back
on him, and then made him ride for a very long time for that.
"I on camel," He told his
uncle softly.
"I remember. Did you like that
Camel?"
"Bumped," Alex said, through
a yawn. He soon went back too sleep, and Jonathan went back to his cards.
It was a beautiful day out, and getting
cooler the closer they came to England. Up on the top deck, Rick, and Evelyn
stood at the railing watching below, as some children played a game of tag.
"Just think that will be Alex one
day," Rick said pulling her closer.
"I know," she said. He could
tell she was thinking about something
"You've been quiet today. She
leaned her head back
"I'm sorry. I guess I just
realized that our baby isn't a baby anymore. I miss when he was little."
Rick turned her to face him and they kissed.
"We could always have more."
"But we haven't," she said.
"Maybe because we haven't been
trying enough." She smiled.
"No, I think Alex is plenty for us
right now, and if one day we have more, then that would be good, but I like how
things are now." They kissed again, and decided to get back to Jonathan,
and Alex
When they got back Alex was awake on
Jonathan's lap listening to a story.
"There's my baby," Evelyn
said. She came over and Alex wanted her to hold him. When she did he lay his
head on here shoulder.
"He was crying up until just
before you came in, I think his ear is sill hurting him," Jonathan said.
Rick offered to go get the doctor again, but Evelyn shook her head.
"He said it would take time for
the penicillin to take affect. She was sitting on the bed, rocking him gently
until he fell back to sleep, then she laid him in the bed, and Rick came and
they both took a nap with him.
The next day Alex was feeling more
himself. He was up at the crack of dawn again, and this time didn't want to
snuggle in bed with his parents, so they got up with him, and all got dressed
in time for one of the ships servants to bring them breakfast. Rick carried the
trey out onto the deck, and in a moment, Jonathan came out looking very tired.
"Unca John sit me sit me."
Jonathan came and took a seat settling Alex on his lap.
"Are you feeling better?" He
nodded and took a bite of eggs that his Uncle had scooped onto their plate. The
wind blew and Alex covered the ear that had been infected. Evelyn excused
herself, and in a moment came back with is little camp and put it on his head.
It covered both of his ears, and then Alex was fine.
After breakfast they all went up on
deck and found the little boys playing. Alex ran over to them ,and they began
to chase each other around. While they played, Rick and Evelyn chatted with the
parents of the boy's who were from America.
"We come to Egypt as often as we
can, the father explained. It was evident that the woman was Egyptian, and
Evelyn spoke to her in her tongue which got her immediate response.
"Where do you live," Rick
asked curiously.
"We live in New York at the
Current moment, though we are trying to get permanent passage to stay in
Egypt," explained the man. Over by the rail one of the oldest boys was
hanging over it. Rick took notice and as the father was about to yell, Rick
silenced him, guessing if the boy got frightened he might fall off. Quickly,
and quietly ,Rick got to him lifting him back to the safe side, then the father
came and took him away. The mother called her other three boys and they left,
and Alex cried
"Hey buddy, they will be
back," Rick said hoping he hadn't made them mad by doing things his way.
"Nooo...See finns." Evelyn
came and picked him up, knowing he was tired, so they went back to the cabin
for rest and relaxatioin.
The days passed quickly, and then about
midday, on the fifth day, they arrived at the main port in London. They stood
on deck watching as the ship docked at the harbor, then it stopped, and it was
time to get off. It was cold here, and rainy. Evelyn explained to Rick that the
rain was constant this time of year. He held Alex in his arms, and had draped a
thick blanket over him for added warmth.
Once they were off, Jonathan went in
search of some Cabs, and given the amount of luggage they had, they guessed two
cabs would do the trick.
Now on the road, they passed several
historical sites, and Alex who was seated on his mum's lap, in the back of the
1st cab was watching things as they passed by. He saw a man with a hat and
stick, and other cars zooming past them. The drive to the Manor was about a
half hour away from the city itself. It was nestled in the countryside, and
despite the rain, it was a big change to see trees and grass growing instead of
sand, and very few plants. When they pulled
up to the Manor Rick was totally
unprepared for how big it was.
"I don't think we have enough
room," He said looking over at his wife. She smiled.
"It is rather large, but it will
be a nice change, " She said. It would be. Their house in Egypt had only
one bath upstairs, and then three bedrooms. Downstairs had been the kitchen,
the Palor and Jonathan's room, and that was about all they had. When they got
out of the car, and Alex saw the house he made them laugh.
"Musem," He said.
"No baby, this isn't a Museum,
this is our new home." She carried him inside, and Jonathan and Rick, and
the two cab drivers unloaded the crates. When the guys came in, Evelyn had just
gotten Alex's sweater off of him, and again Rick was amazed at how big this
place was.
"Would you like to have a
tour?" Evelyn asked her husband? He nodded speechless.
There were two halls on either side of
the front entryway, and Evelyn who still held Alex, took him to the right hall,
down a short distance, to a huge parlor, elegantly decorated, despite all of
the dust covers over the furniture. When he looked up Rick saw the Library on
the second floor, then looked at his wife.
"So this is why you wanted to come
back." She smiled back at him.
"Well it will be nice to have all
of father's books," She said in her defense. She led him over to the
stairs and passed down a short hall that had one entry to the right, and an
entry in front of them. The room was magnificent with a solid Redwood Dining
room table, and plush chairs going all around. There was a China Cabinet with
elegant China, and other things around the room which livened it up. The most
beautiful part, was a huge chandelier, which hung over the table. It was made
out of fine Crystal, and even though it was dusty, it was
still impressive. Rick noticed that
Alex had fallen asleep against his mum's shoulder and offered to take him. As
he did, Alex came awake, just to see who had him, the went back to sleep. They
walked through the huge room into an equally huge kitchen which had another
table, and chairs that were for everyday use. The tour lasted almost a half
hour by the time they got back down to the parlor. Rick removed one of the dust
covers on a sofa, and gently laid Alex there who didn' even make a move.
"So what should we do?"
"I think we need to get our food,
and some other supplies. In the morning I'll call various agencies to hire some
help. We will need a grounds keeper, and some people to come in and
clean," Evelyn said taking charge.
"Should we get someone to take
care of Alex?" She came over to where Rick was sitting on the couch, and
took a seat on his lap.
"What do you think?" She
asked.
"Might be good, just until we get
things fixed up here." She nodded, and put that on her list of things to
do. The rest of the day was spent in their rooms. Their room, and Alex's, was
in the same hallway, and Jonathan's was on the other side of the house. Right
now as Evelyn cleaned the room that was now Alex's, Rick and Jonathan were
putting up an old crib she had said would be up in the attic. While they did
that, Alex played with his toys. He had out his blocks, and his trucks pushing
them through the blocks, content while everyone else got things ready for him.
It took almost an hour, but with the three of them, the room was ready by then.
"Home now," Alex said
standing, and walking over to his mum. Evelyn was sitting in the rocking chair
and lifted her baby on to her lap.
"This is your home baby, our new
home." He yawned.
"So should we all go out to
eat?" Jonathan asked. They all agreed, and went out for a night in their
new city.
More soon.....

Chapter 3: Life in London
After a long night of nearly no sleep,
due to Alex not liking his new home, Rick and Evelyn woke up fairly early in
the morning, still tired. Their baby slept between them, and was sound asleep,
so they got up with care, trying not to wake him. Alex rolled onto his back,
stretching his arms over his head, but remained asleep. Gently, Evelyn put the
covers over him, then she and Rick got dressed,
ready to do the days work. The first
line of business was to get people hired, to come clean up around the house.
Evelyn knew what she needed to do, so Rick steered clear, and went back up to
their room. He was quite, but started to work on getting their things unpacked.
Time passed, he wasn't sure how much, but a knock alerted him to someone's
presence, and an older gray hair woman opened it.
"Mrs. O'Connell sent me to
help," She said. Rick stood and introduced himself.
"Actually, this room is pretty
much completed. There are other rooms." She nodded and left, closing the
door a little too loud, which woke Alex, who cried.
He wasn't much for someone getting him
up, and Rick came and held him., swaying.
"See mum," He said to his
dad, still resting his head on Rick's shoulder. They went downstairs, and found
Evelyn in another Library, more of an office, talking on the phone. Rick put
Alex on her lap, and she kissed the top of his head
"That would be fine, thank
you." Evelyn hung up the phone, and cradled Alex in her arms so she could
see his face.
"Did you have a good sleep?"
he nodded.
"Mum, I hungy now," He told
her.
"Then we need to get you something
to eat," She said kissing his chubby cheek. After she put him down, he ran
out, then stopped not really knowing where to go, so she led him into the
Kitchen where another woman was making breakfast.
"Rick this is Marie, she is going
to help with the routine cleaning, and the cooking." Rick greeted her,
then she knelt down to Alex.
"You must be Alex."
"I hungy," He told her. She
picked him up ,and got him in his highchair, then served him his breakfast, all
without any sort of fuss which was a big change. Rick whispered in Evelyn's
ear.
"She stays," Evelyn smiled
and nodded. As they were getting ready to eat, the front door knocker got their
attention, and Rick left to get it. He opened the door and a young girl,
perhaps in her late teens, greeted him.
"My name is Elaina, my mum sent me
over with a basket for you." Rick invited her in, and Evelyn came with
Alex.
"Elaina, its very nice to meet
you," Evelyn said.
"You want see me room?" Alex
asked. Both Rick and Evelyn nodded, and Alex looked up at his mum. "His
room is up the stairs. The first door on the left leads down a hall, and his is
the first door on the right." She took Alex's hand and they left.
"I guess we don't have to find
anyone to watch over him," Rick said, happy at how this was all working
out. They got through breakfast, and as they were finishing Elaina brought Alex
who wanted to eat his.
"I must be going now," She
said unsure of staying any longer.
"If you don't mind to stay, my
wife and I need to go to some of the stores." She agreed, and after
calling her family, and checking, she was ready to stay and help out.
The first few weeks were busy. Elaina
came over every morning, and stayed until past dinner, to help with Alex who
loved her. The rest of the house was finally clean by the start of the third
week, and the gardens around the house were weeded, and new plants were put in
place. Evelyn got a job at the British Museum, as head of the Egyptian section
without any problem. The Bembridge Scholars were all greatly empressed by her,
and life in England settled into a
nice pace. For Rick life consisted of
time with Alex, and Evelyn. He started going down to the Museum to help out,
and on those days Marie or Elaina kept Alex. Jonathan didn't take long to find
his favorite places to gamble, and drink, and meet lively young woman. He
thought coming back would be a curse when in all honesty it was really quite
wonderful.
Chapter 4: Megan.
It was a warm Saturday afternoon, and
spring arrived bringing with it the growth of fresh flowers, and the chirping
of birds to wake up by. In the Parlor, Alex road around on his Hobby horse, a
wooden horse with wheels, which he loved . Rick and Evelyn had no plans for the
day, and were sitting on one of the couches reading books, of various sorts,
according to what interested them. It was a knock at the door that alerted
them, but Marie called out that she would get it, and when she opened the door,
she found a woman standing at the door with a little girl Alex's age.
"Yes?" Marie asked.
"I came to introduce myself, and
Megan," she said. Marie smiled and let them in.
"Right this way." In the
parlor, Evelyn and Rick stood hearing the voices then their guests arrived.
"I'm sorry did we come at a bad
time? Megan and I were just curious who had moved in." Evelyn smiled and
introduced herself, and Rick.
"May I play witt toys," Megan
asked, seeing Alex's stash in the middle of the parlor floor.
"Of coarse you may," Rick
said going with her.
"I'm Megan's Nanny. We have never
had anyone her age to play with," The woman explained. In a moment Alex
came in and saw someone with his toys.
"Nooooo! He ran over and grabbed
his truck away from Megan.
"Mine," he said forcefully.
She just went to playing with something else.
"Mine." Rick stopped him from
taking the next toy, and this made him mad.
"MINE My toys dad" He hit at
his dad, which was a big no no. Rick stood and excused himself and carried Alex
into the dining room sitting him in a chair which got his attention.
"You do not hit me. That hurts
daddy."
"My toys," Came his soft
response.
"You have to share, Megan came to
play with you, like Elaina does." That seemed to make since to him, and
after that there were no more problems. Alex and Megan chased each other around
the house while Rick kept watch, and Evelyn talked to Catherine. Right now the
two toddlers had managed to get away from Rick's mindful eye, and Alex led
Megan up to the library.
"See books, Alex showed her. They
pulled some of from the bottom shelf, and Alex took her hand, and led her to
the railing.
"Book fall down." He shoved
one through.
In the parlor, Rick came in looking for
his two little run aways, about to say something, when out of no where a book
thudded to the floor. They looked up as two more came down. Rick took the
stairs two at a time, and reached Alex as he was about to shove another one
through.
"Alex no," Alex stopped and
looked back at his dad, then the book, and back at his dad, trying to make a
choice. Megan who was three ran downstairs to her Nanny not about to get into
anymore trouble.
"Give daddy the book please."
Alex seemed to make a desition, because the book joined the others on the
floor. In one swift move, Alex was lifted over his dads shoulder and placed in
a chair close by.
"You have to listen Alex. Books
are to read, not hurt by throwing them off of the balcony." Alex tried to
get down but Rick put him back in the seat.
"You have to sit here for a
moment. What you did was wrong." Alex started to cry, and Rick let him up
after a minute had passed. Then Evelyn came with the books.
"Did they leave?" Rick asked
rocking Alex.
"She felt terrible that Megan
would participate, but I told her they were just being children." Rick
nodded and gently pulled Alex away.
"Do you want to go for a walk with
Daddy and Mum?" He nodded, so they got their coats on, and went outside
where the sky was beginning to darken. They held hands, and Evelyn told Alex,
and Rick about the various plants she had helped to plant a when she was a
little girl. Their life was complete now, and for now normal with no walking
dead guys or plagues to worry about.

Note: Watch for new set of stories of
when Evy and Jonathan were growing up. Might take a while, but hopefully not.
