Title: Alex's First
Adventure
Author: Eviefan
Disclaimer: They are not
mine they are Universal Studios and Stephen Sommers ideas, just borrowing them,
we all know the rest.
Summary: The basic plot is
that this is addressing when if at all did they take Alex on a dig. Was his
first time the movie, or did they take him when they lived in Egypt those first
2 years of his life. Read and find out.
Note: I try to follow the
time line that the movie, and the book sets between the first two. So basically
they met in 1925, and if you figure in Alex being 8, he would have had to be
born in that year, which would make the Wedding have to be in January February
or March. My birth story of Alex sets it in November. Sorry just jotting down
thoughts so you guys can get a sort of time line on how I set the stories up.
The book TMR says that the stayed in Egypt until Alex was
two, then went to London.
So while they were there did they go on anymore digs.
Thats the gist of my story.
Now on with the story.
Alex's first Adventure
Prologue
Since Alex's birth, two
years before, life for Rick and Evelyn had changed dramatically. She was still
Curator, at the Museum, able to take Alex with her most of the time. He was a
good baby, adventurous yes, but also content. Rick and Jonathan had set up a
playpen in her office, and when she was very busy, he would play in there with
no fuss. If there was a day when she knew she was going to be swamped, then
Alex stayed home with dad. Rick still went on digs, none of
the ones that would take
him away from Evelyn or their baby for more than a few days, but he still
needed that since of adventure. As for Jonathan, his life was spent at the
gambling halls, and much to his sister's dismay, he had almost gambled away all
of his gold. They did have one rule for him, now that Alex was here, and that
was, he could not bring girls into the house. That didn't seem to phase him,
and most nights he spent at one of the local hotels.
Today, Evelyn had left Alex
with his father. She had an important phone call coming through, and as much as
she loved having Alex with her, he always picked the days when she had a call,
to be the most noisy. Now she worked on a book she would eventually publish,
about Curses of the Pharaohs. Actually she was almost done with it, and would
be happy to have it published. She had already made good
with the Bembridge
Scholars. They had gotten over their strictly male policy, and had begun to see
what an asset she would be, to their organization.
One the home front, Rick
and Alex were in the parlor playing with his blocks. He loved to build, and for
a two year old, was actually pretty good at it.
"Need dat one,"
He told Rick, referring to the one next to his dads foot. Rick picked it up,
and placed it in Alex's hand, and watched as Alex decided where this would go.
"It fall over
now." Alex put it on the very top of the seven block high tower, and
indeed, it did topple to the ground.
"Should we make
another one?" Rick asked. Alex seemed to think that over.
"No, go see mum."
Alex missed her when she was away, and Rick knew that well, for he felt the
same way.
"I wish we could, but
mum is busy today."
"Unca John go?"
"He is still in his
bed, but I don't think he would mind if you went in to wake him up". It
was well past noon, and Rick had no sympathy for Jonathan if he slept that
late, as far as Alex was concerned. Alex ran out of the parlor and down the
short hall that led to Jonathan's room. The door was cracked and Alex ran in.
"Unca John up
now," He yelled. Jonathan who had been sleeping, peacefully, sat straight
up.
"Whats wrong partner?'
"Notting wrong, got up
now," Alex told him. Jonathan looked over at the door seeing his
brother-in-law standing there, arms folded, stifling a laugh.
"Thanks allot
O'Connell." Alex came to the bed and tugged on the covers, He wanted his
uncle to play with him and wasn't about to take no for an answer.
"Can I at least get
dressed in peace?"
"Come on Alex, lets
let Uncle John get dressed."
"No I tayin
here." Rick came, and lifted Alex into the air, flipping him upside down,
getting laughter.
"Dop me on me
head." As requested, Rick lowered him to the floor, until his head
touched, then laid him on his back.
"Ahem," Jonathan
reminded. Rick ended up having to carry Alex out who was not happy, and
screamed as they left. Once they were gone, Jonathan sat on his bed. Maybe he
should move out.
"Nah, they need
me." With that he got up and started what was left of his day.
It was later that evening
when Evy came home. Everyone was in the parlor, with Alex as always the center
of attention. She had come in through the kitchen, and set her things on the
table, before going in to greet everyone. As soon as she walked in, and Alex
saw her, he got up from his puzzle and ran to her.
"Mum home." She
lifted him into her arms noticing his wet hair.
"You already had your
bath, " she said.
"We would have waited,
but your son, being his creative self, decided to rub mashed potatoes in his
hair before I could stop him," Rick defended.
"Did you do
that?"
"I had ticky in me
hair." he hugged her laying his head on her shoulder.
"Are you ready for
sleepy time?" Evelyn asked rubbing his back.
"Not et," He
wanted down, so she put him back on his own two feet. Alex went back over to
where his uncle was starting to put away his toys.
"Not do dat, Me pay
more wif dose," he said, starting to pull the toys out. In all actuality
it was past his bed time.
"Alex, it's time to
pick up," Rick told him
"Not done et," He
said, tears threatening. He was not fond of bed time, and most times, tears
were shed, despite any effort on their part to make his bedtime pleasant.
"You can play with
them tomorrow," Evelyn said. "Nooo." He did start to cry then,
and Evelyn went to him, picking him up.
"Shhh, we can make
puzzles tomorrow." He rubbed his face against her shoulder not crying as
much. After giving his dad and his Uncle hugs and kisses, Alex was taken
upstairs for bedtime with mum. When they were gone, the guys cleaned up what Alex
had gotten out, which was pretty much every toy he owned.
"I don't think he has
enough toys," Jonathan said, when they finally finished about 10 minutes
later. Rick nodded in agreement. He went to the liquor cabinet and made
Jonathan and himself a drink. Rick had been almost as bad as Jonathan was as
far as drinking went, before he met Evelyn, then once they were together, he
didn't find any interest in that. However, he did find that a drink in the
evening wasn't bad.
"So are you two going
out to eat?" Jonathan asked.
"If you don't care to
stay here with him," Rick said.
"Not a problem, things
don't get going until later anyway." As Jonathan finished his statement,
Evelyn came downstairs wearing more comfortable attire. She had on a shirt and
slacks, and a lighter colored robe of sorts that draped around her shoulders,
and hung down past her knees
"Are we ready,"
She asked. Rick pulled her in his arms
"Not until I get my
kiss," He said. Jonathan groaned and left them to their kisses.
At a small restaurant, one
of their favorites, Evelyn told Rick about what the Bembridge Scholars had
proposed.
"They want us in
England in a month," She said
"Do you really want to
leave Egypt?" Rick asked, very surprised by this.
"You do forget that
London was my first home." That he had not forgotten, but he had the
impression that she had not liked living there in the past.
"So if we do go, do we
have to house hunt?" He asked, as he took a bite of his dinner. "No.
My father had two houses he left to us, so there is one in London, a rather
large house actually, on about 20 acres of land. Rick whistled.
"Don't worry, we also
had people to take care of the land, so thats not a problem." He nodded.
"Sweetheart if London
is where you want to go, then I'm right there with you." She smiled, glad
she had found Rick O'Connell.
"There is one more
little thing, and I'd really like to do this before we move. I'd like to take
Alex up to the Pyramids. They are doing a Renovation there, and we wouldn't
stay past maybe a day or two, but I'd like him too see they place where he was
born," She said not sure how Rick would take that.
"I don't think that
should be a problem." Rick knew she missed the digs, and since she had
gotten job as curator of the museam, there was little time for her to go. That,
and until now there was no way Alex could handle that sort of trip.
Once Dinner was finished
they went out into the streets hand in hand, just enjoying the cool evening,
and one anothers company.
Back at home Jonathan had
thought the evening would be quite, but he was very wrong. Alex had gotten out
of bed shortly after his mum and dad left, and so far he wasn't giving his
Uncle an easy time of things.
"Alex I promise we can
play tomorrow." That was not what Alex wanted, so he kept playing, and
anytime Uncle John would come near him he would scream. Jonathan loved his
nephew, but had no backbone, and Alex got his way with him.
"Oh well, can I play
too?"
"No bed?"
"No bed," and too
himself Jonathan added, 'Until your mum and dad come back.' Once Alex was sure
he wasn't going to have to go to bed, he was fine with Uncle being near him,
and they two played with his little toy trucks, then made puzzles, and chased
each other around, until both of them were so exhausted they fell asleep on the
floor, with Alex using his Uncle as a bed.
It was a little later that
Rick and Evelyn found them that way, amidst all of the toys. Evelyn shook her
head, then she went over to her brother and whispered his name. Jonathan woke
up fast.
"Shhh." Rick came
and lifted Alex into his arms, which woke him.
"Noo. Pay," He
said and started to struggle to be put down.
"Bedtime buddy,"
Rick said lifting Alex over his shoulder. Alex started to cry, but dad wasn't
giving in, and when Evelyn was ready, they both went upstairs into his room.
"Noooo," He
screamed when Rick laid him in his crib.
"Mum hold mum
hold," He cried over and over.
"Shhh." She
rubbed his back, and hummed a lullaby, and eventually he fell asleep. Evelyn
put a blanket over him, then came out of his room latching the gate that
Jonathan, and Rick had set up to keep Alex in his room. When she arrived in
their room Rick was waiting for her, and she closed the door behind her.
More to come
Note: I don't know if this
has been up once, but I've sort of had a change of plans, and revised this
original a bit, as you may have noticed if you read it already. If you didn't,
might be helpful to go back and re read this last part again.
Part 2 coming soon.

Chapter 2 The Start of the
Adventure
It was a busy day in the
Market, but then everyday was busy with different people buying fabrics for
clothing, or jewelry, food ,or other things sold there. Today Rick and Alex
were out among the masses, getting a few supplies for the trip they would make
to the pyramids in the morning. Right now Alex was in his father's arms, a safe
place to be among so many, but as with many 2 years olds his age, he didn't
want to be carried, and began to struggle.
"Down dad, down
now," he said.
"You have to hold my
hand then," Rick told him.
"Will. Down now."
Rick leaned over and set his little boy on the ground, and Alex took his hand,
and the two continued their walk. As they approached the area where various
food items were sold, Alex spotted many of the strays that lived among the
streets. He pulled away from his father, intent on going after them, but was
lifted back into strong arms.
"Alex, you can't run
off like that," reminded his father.
"See da Cats," He
said, anxious to be on his own two feet.
"I'm going to put you
down, but you have to hold my hand okay?" Alex nodded and when Rick put
him down, he didn't let go of dad's hand. They walked over to where a vender
had food and other such things, that he sold, and Rick bought some rice, and
some nuts of various sorts, keeping one hand out so Alex had him to hold on to.
When they finished there, Rick found a place where jewelry was hand-crafted,
and spotted a necklace he thought Evy would like. He let go of
Alex's hand, reminding him
to stay right beside him, and began to haggle a price with the dealer. The lure
of a cat running down the street drew Alex's attention, and without a second
thought he was gone. He ran all they way to the end of this particular section
of the market, then wandered around a bit. People watched him, but didn't hurt
him. Finally Alex found a place he liked. It was a
wood shop, with wood toys,
and he went in, and found a wooden camel that he could pull. When he tried to
touch it, the man who did the carvings, yelled at him. Alex looked up at the
man, and started to scream.
Back at the jewelry store,
Rick finally got the man to give him a good price for what he wanted, and after
paying for it, he turned to find Alex no where in site. Rick ran out into the
streets pushing people out of the way and yelled for his son. He got many
disapproving stares, but didn't care, his son was missing, and the streets of
Cairo were not a place to be, when you were two, and all
alone. After five minutes
of frantic searching Rick stopped to get his breath, and that's when her heard
the scream. He thanked what ever gods were watching over him and Alex this day,
and followed the screams to a little wood shop. To his relief Alex was safe,
holding onto a toy of some sort, crying. Rick ran to him, and picked him up,
paying the man for his toy, and left.
"Want pay wif
dis," Alex said sniffing.
"Not till we get home.
You scared me Alex. You can't run off like that." Alex rested his head on
Rick's shoulder, and after getting his bags, and Alex situated, he headed back
to their house.
At home, Evelyn was packing
for the trip. She had Alex's things together, and was starting on theirs, when
she heard the door open downstairs, and Alex's cries. She hurried down finding
Alex over his dad's shoulder.
"Looks like you had a
tough time," She said coming over to them.
"He decided to run
off," Rick said, setting Alex down. Alex sat down and continued to cry,
which meant he was tired.
"Are you ready for a
story." Alex pouted
"Not seepen." He
crossed his arms in front of him. He knew that story time either meant a nap
was in the works, or bed time.
"We can lay in mum's
bed," Evelyn tried.
"No, want pay wif me
toy." He got up and pulled it into the Parlor. Rick came, and pulled her
into his arms.
"I hate having to
force him to do things, " she admitted.
"I do to, but he has
to have his nap." If Alex didn't have a nap, he was generally a wreck by
the end of the day, having several temper tantrums. They walked in to the
Parlor ready to do battle, and found a sweet sight before them.
Alex was laying on the
floor with his new toy tucked under one arm, fast asleep.
Evelyn went to the Sofa,
and picked up a afghan, and took it to Alex, carefully draping it over him. He
sighed but stayed asleep, and both were relieved to have some quite time.
Dinner included everyone,
even Uncle John, who at the moment was keeping Alex in good spirits. They had a
rule with Alex, and that was he had to stay in his highchair until one of the
adults was finished with their dinner.
"Unca John eat
dis." Alex had a green bean in his hand which Jonathan ate it right out of
it, making the little boy laugh.
"You silwe Unca
John."
"I am not silly."
Alex threw a bean at his Uncle, and got mum and dads attention very quickly.
"Alex, you don't throw
your food," Evelyn told him in a stern tone of voice.
"I silwe," He
said.
"Not when you do
that," she said. He pouted then.
"Want down now."
He said softly. Jonathan, who had finished with his dinner, took him out of the
highchair, and into the parlor to play, leaving mum and dad to a more private
dinner for two.
"I got new toy. Alex
ran over to the carved camel and pulled it around.
"I say, that is a
spiffy new toy" Alex nodded.
"I see da cats an run
got scared daddy," he said all in one breath. Jonathan, not really
understanding ,just nodded.
"Should we build a
tower." Alex thought that over a moment.
"I see cats," He
said. Alex had a love for cat's, and even though they had one of their own, who
his mom had adopted before he was born, Alex always wanted to see the others.
Their cat, Cleo, didn't like him all that much, and always hissed at him if he
got too close.
"I don't think tonight
Alex, its a little late," Jonathan said.
"I goin self." He
ran to the door, and tried to open it, and could, but Rick and
Jonathan had it locked up
so he couldn't get out.
"I want out," He
screamed, tugging at the door with all he had. That was Uncle Johns Cue to let
mum and dad handle things, and in a moment Evelyn came in to get him ready for
bed.
"Mum out see cats
now," He was starting to cry, tired.
"Shall we go find
Cleo," Evelyn suggested.
"Nooo I see out
cats," Came his very loud reply. Evelyn tried to pick him up, but he
pulled away and lay down on the floor balling up.
"Who should I
tickle." She tickled under his arms ,and despite his best efforts,
Alex laughed. Then she
picked him up and carried him upstairs for bath and bedtime.
A little later that night
when, everything was quiet, Rick and Evelyn sat outside on their little patio
of sorts, on a wicker couch. She was snuggled against him enjoying being in his
arms.
"So are we ready for
our little journey to the pyramids?" He asked.
"I think so. I feel
like I've packed all of Alex's belongings, she admitted. Rick could tell she
was tired and stood, turning, and pulled her to stand with him. Gently he took
her into his arms.
"I love you."
They shared a brief kiss before Jonathan told them that Alex was awake, and for
now any sort of romantic moment would have to wait.

Chapter 3: The Pyramids
It was early in the morning
when Rick and Evelyn got up to get ready for their trip. Both of them got
dressed in comfortable cloths for the desert travel, then while Rick went down
to fix them some breakfast, Evelyn went in to get Alex up. When she entered she
found him already awake, playing with his Camel, pulling it
around his room.
"See me toy mum,"
He said as she walked in.
"I do. Are you ready
to go on a trip?" He nodded and came over to where she was getting out his
cloths, a short sleeved cotton shirt, and little overalls, as well as a hat,
that he would wear once the sun started to rise. Once she got him dressed, they
went downstairs where breakfast was waiting for them. As she started to put him
in his highchair, Alex protested this.
"No sit wif oo,"
He told her. Not wanting to start the day with an argument, Evelyn sat down
with Alex on her lap, and they had a fairly quiet breakfast.
"Unca John up,"
Alex said struggling to be put down.
"Baby he's going to
stay here," Evelyn told him.
"I go pay." She
put him down, and he ran out of the kitchen toward the parlor.
"I think we are going
to have our hands full on this trip," admitted Rick.
"I know we will, but
I'm still looking forward to this." He nodded. It was their first trip,
with him, away from Cairo, granted it wasn't to a tropical paradise, but being
able to take him to the pyramids would be interesting to say the very least.
Instead of going to play,
like Alex had said, he ran straight into his Uncles room. Jonathan lay spralled
on the bed, still dressed in the cloths he had worn while out at the bars.
"Unca John go wif to
pemids," Alex said running to the bed. Jonathan felt his head throbbing,
and bit his tongue. He loved Alex, but not when he was having a hangover.
"Alex, Uncle John not
feeling good," Jonathan managed. This did not register, and Alex pulled a
chair over to the bed and climbed on.
"Up seep head,"
Alex said giving him a kiss. Jonathan sighed. Dispite his frustration, Alex
really was a cute little booger.
"I guess I could
go."
"Go wif us."
Evelyn walked in then.
"Alex, let Uncle John
sleep," She said coming to the bed. Alex slipped off and crawled under the
bed.
"Evy, don't worry,
I'll come to just let me get up and packed."
"Are you sure?"
He sat up and felt the room begin to spin.
"Fix me some
coffee." She nodded and left him to get dressed.
Now they were at another
market, close to where they would enter the desert to get to the pyramids.
While Jonathan and Rick haggled over the price of three camels, Alex held mum's
hand looking around at all the animals. Aside from camels, there were horses,
and mules, and cats that actually didn't mind him. Alex held a little kitten up
by the neck, and Evy knelt down.
"You have to be
gentle." She helped him hold it, and he laughed as it licked his neck, and
mewed
"I have kitty,"
He said looking up at her.
"We have a
kitty." Alex made a sad face.
"Ceo not nice."
"Well we have to show
her that you can be gently, then she will be nice." Alex nodded and as he
put the kitten down Rick and Jonathan came with their rides, already loaded
with the things they would need. Rick gave the command for his Camel and
Evelyn's to lay down, and when they did she got on, and he lifted Alex on in
front of her. When she had a good hold on him, and Rick was on own they gave
the command, and the camels stood. Alex liked being on his and wanted to
hold the ropes that were
used to lead them.
"Alex listen to mum,
we have to be gently can you do that for me?" He nodded and the journey
began. Alex did well for almost 2 hours, then he got tired.
"Want off."
Evelyn reached behind them and pulled out a book for him to look at, but he
didn't want it. Rick noticed that Alex was getting restless and slowed down so
they were side by side.
"Hey buddy, do you
want to sit with me?" Alex nodded and when they were as close as they could
get, Rick reached over and lifted Alex onto his Camel. Evelyn gave him a bottle
with water in it, and Alex drank it and fell asleep.
It was close to lunch, when
they arrived at the Pyramids. There were workers there restoring it, and a
bunch that both Rick and Evelyn knew. Once they were of off their camels, Alex
was ready to play, so Uncle John chased him around the camp site.
"Big pemid," Alex
said looking at the one they were closest too.
"Yes they are big
aren't they."
"Me took it," Alex
said. Took meant touch, and before Jonathan could grab ahold,
Alex was off and running.
At the campsite, Rick and
Evy put up their tent, which was fairly large to accommodate the three of them.
They spread our a large bed role, one they would all sleep on, and then went
out of their tent finding Jonathan coming back with Alex who was not happy. He
came over to them, and Evelyn took her son in her arms.
"He wanted to go
inside, but I thought we should wait for you two." They both nodded, and
got someone who could show them all the restoration they had been doing, and
went for a tour. On the way Rick took Alex and lifted him on his shoulders, and
once inside Alex quieted.
"Dark," he said.
"Yes it is, but its
safe." It was safe, they would only stay in they main tunnels that they
knew were structurally sound. Evelyn was impressed with the work they had done.
The last time they had been here, two years ago, the walls had been covered
with dust and cobwebs, now you could see the hieroglyphs.
"Down dad," Alex
told Rick. Rick set him down and held his hand.
"Run?"
"Not in here,"
Evelyn said reading some of the hieroglyphs. The most impressive room was they
main chamber. It was clean, and some of the treasures were set up.
Alex let go of dads hand
and ran over to a mini statue of Horace, all covered in gold.
"Petty, " Alex
said about to touch it. Evelyn scooped him into her arms.
"Alex, we need to look
at it not touch, like when we go to the museum." Alex nodded, and she put
him back down. Once they had toured, they went back out to the camp, and had
lunch, which consisted of rice beans, and some bread they had gotten that
morning. Alex ate most of his lunch and wanted to go back into the
pyramids.
"We can go back after
you have a nap." Alex got up, and took off, and Rick went after him. Alex
ran around several of the tents, doing his best not to get caught. Rick figured
out his pattern and waited, and in a moment his little boy came around one
tent, right into his arms.
"Gotcha," Rick said
tossing him into the air. Alex laughed.
"Gain dad gain,"
He said. Rick did that three more times then carried Alex back to their tent.
After getting a clean diaper on him, Evelyn laid him down on the bed role, and
lay next to him.
"Want tory of
princess," Alex told her. Evelyn told him stories about a little princess
who lived in Egypt a long time ago, and her life in ancient Egypt. As it always
did, the story put him right to sleep. She was tired as well and fell asleep
next to him.
Their day went by quickly.
After Alex woke up from his nap, they went back into the pyramids, and let him
look around till his hearts content, then they took turns chasing him around
the campsite. Now it was past dinner, and in the tent, Alex was playing with
his trucks that Evelyn had packed, having fun driving them around in the sand.
While he did that, Evelyn got things ready for bed. They would be leaving again
early in the morning, and she wanted to be prepared. She didn't see Alex crawl
out of the back of the tent. He was behind the tents, and moved fast up to the
pyramids, going inside. Torches on the walls gave off light, and he walked
along familiar paths, then found some that were not that familiar, but kept
going. The workers had were not there, so noone knew where he was.
Back in the tent Evelyn had
finished what she was doing, and turned to get Alex settled down for bed,
finding him gone. She stood up and ran out of the tent looking around. That
caught Rick's attention., and he ran to her
"Alex got away,"
She said mortified. They both knew where he was, and very quickly teams were
set up to look for Alex in the Pyramids. Now they were off on their own.
"I shouldn't have
taken my eyes off of him for one minute," she said near tears.
Rick stopped her and pulled
her into his arms.
"Evy we can't always
watch him, and I know how you feel, but we will find him." He kissed her
and they continued on.
Now Alex was crying. He was
lost, and wanted his mum and dad. He walked over a spot and was suddenly
falling, then everything went dark. The search went on into the night, and it
was the man who headed the dig who found in one of the older passages a place
where the ground had caved in. He stopped his group and the knew they would
have to rig a way to look in without collapsing more of the
ground. As they worke they
heard Alex start to cry.
"Bring the
O'Connells." Alex had fallen about 8 feet into another chamber, with
snakes, though nothing too close to him. When the diggers saw this, they knew they
didn't have time to waste. Thats when Rick, Evelyn, and Jonathan arrived.
"I don't know how
badly injured he is, We will need to lower someone down to him," One of
the workers said. Since Evelyn was the lightest it was decided she should go.
"He's getting
up," Someone said.
Rick called out to him.
"Daddy, out," He
cried.
"Alex mum is coming in
to get you can you sit real still." Alex listened and sat still, and in a
moment Evelyn was lowered down enough to where she could reach him. She held onto
him tight as they were pulled up, and once they were out she sat with him
checking for any wounds. Amazingly all he came out with was a sprained ankle,
which one of the men bandaged up back out at the camp, then they
packed up and headed home.
A few days later Alex was
back to himself. Things in his house were being packed
up, and he didn't
understand what that meant, but didn't care, as long as they people he loved
the most were with him, then all was right in his world.
THE END
Note... I don't know if
they would have had pits but I thought why not this is my story. Hope you guys
