Two intrepid young leaders from Skerries Sea Scouts recently undertook the international scouting challenge in the French/Italian Alps. The two leaders had to complete fourteen projects while on the ten day challenge, which entailed researching the local industry, farm produce and tourism in addition to linking up with the local scouting groups in the area. The two leaders experienced the hospitality and generosity of the local people as they hiked a total of 200 km through the Alps. They had to survive this ordeal on the equivalent of 3 per day. The climax of the trip was a Celtic festival in the town of Courmayer in Italy, where the girls were the only real Celts present, and thus contributed to the authenticity of the event. After four days of rest and recreation with the other teams on the challenge the girls returned home with the prestigious explorer belt award. |
