BLACK WIDOW SPIDER |
Not Actual Size |
ABOUT. Black Widow is considered the most venomous spider in North America, and definitely here in Las Vegas, Nevada. An adult female, is black and hairless looking, about a half inch long (1.5 inches with legs spread) with two reddish inverted triangles that resemble an hour-glass on her belly. They are nocturnal and shy, and the female rarely leaves the web in which she normally sits belly up waiting for prey. Their webs are erratic in appearance, and the silk is stronger than almost all other arachnids. |
|
| WHERE.You will find that these spiders love to build their homes on the underside of ledges, rocks, plants and debris, wherever a web can be strung. Cold weather and drought may drive these spiders into buildings. They can also be found in badly kept yards and occasionally by the water meter pipes or corners that are rarely visited or disturbed. |
|
| WHAT TO DO. Keep your garden as free of insects as possible. That's what Black Widows eat. Getting your home serviced by an exterminator on a regular basis will not only eliminate the spider’s food supply, but also kill any existing spiders in your home and in your yard . Keep tidy. Speak to your neighbors to do the same to keep their property in decent condition. If bitten, seek immediate medical attention. |

BROWN RECLUSE |
Not Actual Size |
ABOUT.The name itself describes its color and its habits. The Brown recluse is one of the most dangerous spiders in the valley. The venom from this spider can cause tissue to die called “necrosis”. Color ranges from light tan to dark brown, and is covered with numerous fine hairs that gives a velvety appearance. The long, thin, brown legs also are covered with fine hairs, but not spines. Adult brown recluse spiders have a leg span about the size of a quarter. |
|
| |
| WHERE.The web is often in an undisturbed corner where the spider spends time in the day and roams at night. A brown recluse can be found indoors and outdoors. Indoors, they may be found in attics, basements, crawl spaces, cellars, closets, and ductwork or registers. They may seek shelter in storage boxes, shoes, clothing, folded linens, and behind furniture. They also may be found in outbuildings such as barns, storage sheds, and garages. Outdoors, brown recluse spiders may be found underneath logs, loose stones in rock piles, and stacks of lumber. |
WHAT TO DO.Tidy or not the brown recluse likes dry dark undisturbed places. Be mindful when going into your attic, or the unused part of storage rooms and closets. These spiders can multiply fast in a favorable environment. Getting help from an exterminator can help eliminate these dangerous problems. If bitten, seek immediate medical attention. |

DESERT SCORPIONS |
Not Actual Size |
| ABOUT. There are several species of scorpions in the United States. The more common in the valley is the Desert Scorpion. The bite of this scorpion is not deadly, but can be potentially dangerous if you are allergic. They are very aggressive and always ready to sting. |
|
| WHERE. Scorpions tend to hide under wood piles, rocks, firewood and other construction debris that may be left in the yard for a long period of time. This is where they hide in the day and they come out at night to eat. |
|
WHAT TO DO. (RESEARCHED FROM www.desertusa.com) Scorpions are difficult to control with insecticides alone. Therefore, the first control strategy is to modify the area surrounding a house. If bitten, seek immediate medical attention.
- Remove all trash, logs, boards, stones, bricks and other objects from around the home.
- Keep grass closely mowed near the home. Prune bushes and overhanging tree branches away from the house. Tree branches can provide a path to the roof for scorpions.
- Store garbage containers in a frame that allows them to rest above ground level.
- Never bring firewood inside the house unless it is placed directly on the fire.
- Install weather-stripping around loose fitting doors and windows.
- Plug weep holes in brick veneer homes with steel wool, pieces of nylon scouring pad or small squares of screen wire.
- Caulk around roof eaves, pipes and any other cracks into the home.
- Keep window screens in good repair. Make sure they fit tightly in the window frame.
