When i was asked to contribute something to SFAS i planned on writing
a really positive piece telling you all about myself and my crew and all
the good stuff there is going on in my life. The idea of Skinheads using
the Internet sounded a bit weird but i thought what the fuck, even a complete
traditionalist like me has to move with the times. So i went round a mates
house and demanded she show me what it was all about and before long i
was surfing the net or whatever you boffs do. The number of Skinhead sites
is phenomenal! I was half expecting to be bombarded with a load of racist
bollocks but i felt proud to find the white power shit shower were outnumbered
by non racists.
Which is all very impressive but i also realized just how distorted
Skinhead has become. There's some weird and wonderful ideas out there and
i'd love to know where they come from. I'm beginning to wonder if Skinhead
really exists at all or if it's just something people read on the back
of an old album cover.
For instance, why is it so many of the sites i visited go out of
their way to say they are none political? Why not just say 'I am a Skinhead
and i stand for nothing. I believe in nothing. I will fight for nothing.
I am nothing more than a fashion victim. I am nothing more than the clothes
that i wear' Why not say all that and then fuck off and listen to the spice
girls or some other mindless bullshit?
I'm not joking. There has to be more to this than a Fred Perry
T- shirt, a pair of Doc Marts and a tattoo on yer arse saying Skingirl.
Forgive me if i seem angry but since when was being a skinhead about cowardice?
Whether you're a lass or a lad, it makes no odds, a Skinhead is someone
who stands up for what they believe in. Not someone whose happy to say
they believe in nothing and let the world go by while it spits in your
face. Skinhead is about passion and pride. Pride in yourself and pride
in your class. There's more to being working class than beer, chips and
football. We are working class rebels, rebelling against shit jobs and
schools that turn out factory fodder. We are enemies of the state, the
police and the courts that make our lives hell and send us to overcrowded
jails. Skinhead is us and them and they never forget it, so why do we?
Politics is not the problem - apathy is and the only people who benefit
from it are the racists.
There's nothing the Nazis like more than street tough youth, angry
and lost and looking for someone to blame. Don't lower yourselves and say
skinhead is about nothing. Skinhead is about everything.
