| Jack London was born in San Francisco on January 12, 1876. Deserted by his father, William Henry Chaney, Jack was raised by his mother, Flora Wellman and stepfather, John London. When he was growing up he was very poor so at the age of 10 Jack got a job as a newspaper boy. At the age of 14 Jack graduated from grammer school. Since Jack's parents where so poor they couldn't afford for Jack to go back to school so he got a job. |
| It was very rough at first were he woked at a cannery, a jute mill, a laundry, and shoveling coal at a power station for only 10 cents an hour. He often worked 13 to 14 hours a day and 6 to 7 days a week. He lived a lonley childhood and the first person fo culture to enter Jack's life. Often Jack would go to a local saloon and get drunk. One day he met a man of the sea and an oppertuity fell upon him, he would become an oyster pirate. After about 3 monthes Jack went back to San Francisco and became a sailor. Once again he enjoyed his time at sea then when he returned back to Califronia he traveled around the U.S for almost a year. When Jack was 19 he dicided to go back to high school. He know didn't only had to study but also work to make a living. Jack wanted to go to the revolutionary movement but instead dicided to finish school first, including collage. He then gets kicked out of school for his involvment in the Socialist Labor Party. So he studies on his own for the enterance exams to the University of California at Berkley. He was accepted but after just 4 monthes he was dropped from the University. He began to write again. Jack's big greak came when he published a book in 1900 named "An Odyssey of the North". Later that year he met a woman named Bessie Maddern and got married. A while later, Jack and Bessie had a daughter named Joan. In 1902 Jack a Bessie had another daughter and he began writing Call of the Wild. In the comming year Jack traveled a lot and met many people. He also had many extramarital arrairs. When Bessie found out she filed a divorce. Jack then marries Charmain, who would be his mate for the rest of his life. By the age of 20 he was already known around the world for books such as "Call of the Wild","The Sea Wolf" and other literary and journalistic acomplishments. Jack was enjoying life and while his ranch and barn were under reconstrution he dicided to take a journey. So he built a ship and he and Charmain set out on a voyage set to last 7 years. In fact it lasted 27 monthes and only took them as far as the South Pacific and Australia. Although Jack achieved success he always felt as if he didnt quite belong. Then on November 22, 1916, at the age of 40 he died from gastrointestinal uremia. |
