Getting Started with Mapping

Once you have downloaded the newest version of quark and python. First thing is to install python first and RESTART YOUR MACHINE!!! Then install quark if it does not recognize that you just installed python then you need to remove and reinstall them both or try the minipython then quark (don't forget to restart after you install minipython). Once you have them installed properly you'll need the compiling tools (see left side of the page using link under downloads) that we discussed earlier. Download them and unzip them to a folder in your Q2 directory (create one if you want). Then open quark and you will see an icon on the top of the window that if you move your mouse over says new quake2 map. Click on that and a new window will open. You will see a toolbar near the top and you want to select options and go to configuration. Here is where you want to tell quark the location of the tools that you just unzipped they are qrad.exe (makes the map file a bsp file, timvis.exe (creates the dynamic lighting affects) and arghrad.exe (compiles the finallized map and direct lighting) Click on the browse button and find the directory of each program so that quark knows where you put them. Hit apply and you are ready to start. You'll notice your new map has already been started for you it is a room with four walls a sky floor and light and info_player start. You can change the textures of the polys/brush (aka walls floor ceiling sky door etc) by right clicking on them and choose texture and select one from the list that appears. Make sure you are not highlighting with your right click only one side of the poly or you will change only that side you have selected. Before you begin resizing by dragin or adding new polys by right clicking on an open area the most important thing to remember is that you must make sure your map is entirely sealed from the outside world. If a light or ammo or health can see into the outside world your map will leak and you will not be able to complile it. So take your time and make sure you fit your polys properly. There is a feature in quark that is called tag side. This will allow you to select the top side of your floor for example and right click on that side choose tag side and then you can select your walls and right click on the bottom of them to select the bottom side and choose glue to tagged. This will assure that you have sealed them properly. Make sure you do this to tie things together properly. Use this technique as needed for all edges. TAKE YOUR TIME and CHECK OFTEN FOR LEAKS OF HOLES. This will save you the trouble later of the tedius task of finding and fixing one after another after another... that sucks trust me. You can right click on an open area and select new item and add some new things. Try different things and see how they work for you.
