the attempt to make a rush for more VLs caused a disaster.  The inital attack was a push to the West after capturing the inner portion of the town in the East.  At the Western bridge the stuart managed to take out many of the enemy, but was itself ambushed by a shreck team.  Then the decision to charge North and center while under a state of low morale led to massive collapse of FM along with the surrender of at least one whole team!  Then the FM award gave the center of the town to the Germans, in the computer's freakish wisdom.
Here is the consequence of attacking when your FM is wavering!  An entire BAR team gave it up!  Can't say I blame them.  They just saw another team get roasted alive.  Damn you, Ima the Hun!

The huge St. Sauveur map, showing the effect of swapping BGs.  Although the enemy does not control areas in the light shaded portion, the Americans will have to race against the enemy to regain them.  A stupid move, in retrospect.  No screenshots of the battle are available.  The tactical goal of the Americans was to capture the central buildings while neglecting the Northern area.  They also attempted to capture the Southernmost edge of the map.  Both tactics failed.  A brief capture of two VL's, IIRC, failed due to collapse of FM from loss of a Wolverine and ferocious fire from LMG's and Schweres which decimated the infantry.  A counterattack nearly succeeded in wiping this BG from the map altogether.
