The chase for 62 came to an end on this September '98 night in St. Louis, as Mark McGwire connected off Steve Trachsel in the fourth inning for an uncharacteristically short longball, but nevertheless it counted as #62 on the season as he was congratulated by his fiercest competitor in the home run chase, Cubs outfielder Sammy Sosa (who had 58 HRs at that point). As for the game, St. Louis lit up Trachsel for five earned runs in the sixth inning as the Cards defeated the Cubs, 6-3. On another note, this game also marked the debut of former college phenom and current Braves outfielder J.D Drew, who went 0-for-2 after replacing Ron Gant in left field.
