There are many organisations operating on the Internet as legitimate advertisers. However, there are a few which masquerade as such, while perpetrating all manner of sins upon an innocent community of Internet surfers. One such company is: GoHip!.

GoHip! offers a "free" movie viewer. You see a link to a (non-existant) clip, which then displays the text: "If no movie plays, accept the download prompt for GoHip's Movie Plugin". If you do, they attach their ad to all of your outgoing email, put a banner in your browser, reset your start page and add unwanted bookmarks or favorites. Trying to change any settings won't work. The only way to get rid of GoHip is by running the remover program.

Others are far less obvious, but no less inoccuous. They are usually installed like a virus, carried on the back of another program that you install intentionally. Their sole purpose is recording browsing habits in order to sell your profile to advertisers. There exists, however, an automated method of detection and removal, called Ad-Aware, from Lavasoft.
