1. Steve Yeago “On Stemcell research.” Sept. 10, 2001. <http://yeago.net/apercu/schools/stemcell.html>.

This article explains how stem cell researched progressed by its speakers and researched proof. Talked about the scientific and nature debates over this topic. Then it went into spiritual explanations, which were supported with lots of examples from religious view. They went into a deep explanation about how stem cells are gotten and researched on. Later on this article ended with government decisions and funding for this research. We used this article’s strong descriptions on the two sides on stem cell research.

2. “Australia Set to Give Green Light to Embryo Research.” November 10, 2002. <www.sunherald.com/mld/sunherald/news/breaking_news/4489785.htm> The Australia governmental houses are set to say yes to stem cell researching in their country. Even though many argue about thus decision, the likelihood of it not passing is very small. One group that opposed stem cell research was the Do No Harm group. Citizens state that stem cell research will not be successful. But Australia wants to attempt to regenerate organ tissue. We used this article’s descriptions on how people are unsure about stem cells.

3. McGraw, Marvin “Stem Cell repository coming to Baton Rouge.” October 23, 2002.  <www.wbrz.com/stories/102302/new_cells.shtml>

This describes how New Jersey Company is teaming up with Louisiana State University hospital system. Because of this they will be considered the nation’s largest repository of stem cells. Then it said that the bioengineering company Anthrogenesis would harvest the stem cells from the human placenta. This is a new discovery because scientists found out that the human placenta holds the most stem cells. Due to this extraordinary discovery, they will be closer to cures for diseases. A congressman really though what they are doing is very unique. We used this article’s descriptions on how stem cells can be extracted from other parts of the human body.

4. “Bush calls for study of embryo protections.” October 30, 2002. <www.theolympian.com/home/news/20021030/frontpage/29710.shtml>

This article talks about how the Bush administration has set up an advisory panel to revise what protections embryos and fetuses have in experiments. They think that federal officials may be using so called “back door” methods to get abortion rights. And with abortion rights they can have more fetuses to research on. The panel hopes to get rid of all the methods and to keep the pregnant women in research safe. We used this article’s descriptions on how scientists can trick people into making women abort their fetuses.

5. Black, Richard. “Stem cell may repair hearts.” November 18, 2002. <news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/2487033.stm>

This useful source describes how heart doctors think stem cells can help repair damage from heart attacks. Some doctors who spoke at the meeting of the American Heart Association in Chicago said that they used stem cells from bone marrow in their patients and they had encouraging results. Scientists from UK injected bone marrow stem cells in the hearts of some of their heart attack patients and said that the patients’ hearts were able to pump blood around the body much better. We used this article’s descriptions on how stem cells can help the heart recover from heart attacks.

6. “Playing God…what’s so bad about it? ~Pinky and the brain.” February 27, 2002. <www.unsolvedmysteries.com/usm223695.html>

Is cloning playing God? This was one question this person asked. He then continued to describe that its not because when we clone we are playing man and not God. Many people also get confused with that term, but this person took it literally and made a point. This person also said that if President Bush didn’t slow stem cell research down we might of gotten major results this year. We used this article’s descriptions of how other think about stem cell research.

7. Fake, Dan. “Stem cells- what lies ahead?” July 27, 2001.

<http://groups.google.com/groups?q=stem+cells+-+what+lies+ahead%3F&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&selm=Zmk87.22669%24gj1.2162239%40bgtnsc05-news.ops.worldnet.att.net&rnum=1>

This person describes how stem cells research is at times a failure and an expected breakthrough. Scientists are people who expect that they will find an answer to their questions. Then he talked about sites that will have articles about diseases with little therapies, which lure stem cell research. But he continued to explain a breakthrough may be tomorrow or in years. We used this article’s descriptions about how stem cells can be a failure.

8. Jane E. Henney. “A Teachable Moment for Academic Medical research.” <www.aamc.org/newsroom/reporter/may2000/view.htm>

She discusses how scientific research helps us get steps closer to cures. She then emphasized how medicine is important for research. She then described the partnership of NIH and FDA who research stem cells. All in this entire article was mostly concentrated on the importance of research. We used this article’s descriptions on the importance of research.

9. Stafford, Ned. “Germany’s strict new stem cell law takes effect.” October 7, 2002. <www.wellspan.org/Healthnews/reuters/NewsStory0710200236.htm>

Germany finally started to allow stem cell research. But the Koch Institute was in charge of the stem cell researching in Germany. The new law was passed in April. They were given specific guidelines to follow while researching. One was that embryos are only to be used for research and nothing else. If they don’t they will be penalized. We used this article’s descriptions on how other countries have strict laws on stem cell research.

10. O’Mathuna, Donal. “Cloning and Stem Cell Research.” Fall, 2000. <www.cbhd.org/newsletter/002/002omathuna.htm>

If Great Britain’s parliament agrees to have stem cell research practice, England will be the first country in the world to allow cloning. Describes how stem cells will benefit the patients. Some plan to follow guidelines of NIH. NIH says to use private funds to destroy and use embryos and use public funds for research. Using aborted fetuses for research is very cruel and playing God. We used this article’s descriptions on how England may become the first country to allow cloning.

11. Lenoir, Noelle. “Europe Confronts the Embryonic Stem Cell Challenge.” <groups.google.com/groups?q=rights+and+responsibilities+of+stem+cell+researchers&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&selm=20000304175634.02601.00000044%40ng-fa1.aol.com&rnum=1>

Embryonic research is making a medical revolution. All major monotheistic religions have different views on stem cell research. Many Europeans believe that the human embryo should be left alone. Some European countries prohibit research on aborted fetuses. Only 7 of the 15 in the EU (European Union) allow embryonic research. Other European countries are still deciding if they should allow the research. We used this article’s descriptions on how embryonic research is making a medical revolution.

12. “Stem Cells.” April 12, 2001. <www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/health/jan-june01/stemcells_4-12.html>

This article says how stem cell research has had lots of medical breakthroughs. Describes they way stem cells work (turning into cell it is surrounded by). Stem cells revitalize organs. They also patched up mice’ hearts. Most stem cells come from the human embryo. Some come from the adult body. President Bush doesn’t support stem cell research from “aborted” fetuses. UCLA has claimed that they have isolated cells that act like stem cells from adult fat. Those cells can act like stem cells with the help of chemicals. We used this article’s descriptions on how stem cells can revitalize organs.

13. Berger, Eleni. “Research avenue adds fuel to stem cell controversy.” July 11, 2001. <lacelula.udl.es/cnn.pdf>

Bush has limited funding for stem cell research. Embryo limits have been spurred on by the abortion debate. Scientists in Virginia have created human embryos for the use of stem cell research. Stem cells are cells that are “blank” (as stated in the article), and they are used to mimic or become any cell in the human body. Scientists plan to grow tissue with the use of stem cells and to use them to replace damaged tissue in the human body. Adult stem cells that are found in bone marrow may become an alternative instead of human embryos. We used this article’s descriptions on how stem cells are blank and mimic their surroundings.

14. “The Stem Cell Research Foundation Seeks To Protect Vital Research Through Therapeutic Cloning.” January 2003. <www.stemcellresearchfoundation.org/WhatsNew/January_2003.htm>

In president Bush’s address to the U.S.A. he said that he wants to ban all types of human cloning. The Stem Cell Research Foundation agrees to put a ban to human cloning but wants congress to allow therapeutic cloning. The foundation wants therapeutic cloning to be allowed because it holds the key to cure many dreadful diseases. The foundation plans to join a numerous amount of stem cell research facilities so they all can let the search for cures to move forward. The article states that lots of states agree with therapeutic research. We used this article’s descriptions on how Bush wants a ban on all human cloning.

15. Cohen, Elizabeth. “Stem cells help heal paralyzed rats.” August 3, 2001. <www.cnn.com/2001/HEALTH/08/03/stemcell.research/>

McDonald is the director of the Spinal Cord Injury Unit at Washington University School of Medicine. His patient is the actor Christopher Reeve who is paralyzed from the neck down. McDonald gave lab rats an injury similar to Reeves, and then injected stem cells into them. In a couple of weeks the rats legs functioned again. The reason Reeve isn’t receiving the treatment is because the stem cell debate is going on and the doctors cant use them on humans just yet. The stem cells would be used to make the outer coating of Reeves’s vertebrae. We used this article’s descriptions on how stem cells can heal paralyzed parts of the body.

16. Herper, Matthew. “Cloning People Easier Than Profits.” 12/30/02. <www.forbes.com/2002/12/30/cx_mh_1230clones.html>

A company called Clonaid claims that they have cloned a 7-month year old baby named Eve. Many skeptics doubt that the baby exists because when a baby is cloned it goes through life threatening side effects. Last summer cloning was very popular topic because many thought it could be used to regenerate human organs and tissue. Cloned animals may be used to be sold as food. The companies that research with stem cells for animal cloning are not telling anyone about their progress in cloning. We used this article’s descriptions on how cloning/stem cell research can be a controversial subject.

17. Robinet, Jane-Ellen. “Pittsburgh scientists vie for piece of stem cell research pie.” December 13, 2002. <Pittsburgh.bizjournals.com/Pittsburgh/stories/2002/12/16/story2.html?t=printable>

Magee-Womans Research Institute are planning to become one of the major stem cell research industry. They plan to receive some federal funding and also plan to do some private investment. Stem cells are a hot topic these days die to their way of being capable of curing harmful diseases (Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease). Most of stem cell research is conducted from aborted embryos. Dr. Huard on his quest to perfect stem cell research opened up his own company called Cook Myosite. We used this article’s descriptions on how stem cells are “hot topics” die to their capabilities.

18. Friedman, Lisa. “Cloning spurs Senate sparring.” Thursday, February 06, 2003 – 4:01:49 AM MST. <www.oaklandtribune.com/Stories/0,1413,82~1865~1161889,00.html.>

Senate has been arguing over a bill that “prohibits scientists from using fertilized eggs or conducting research on eggs past 14 days.” The house has passed two bills that prohibits stem cell research, but there are lots of “rival bills” to settle. Many scientists claim the claim of the company Clonaid cloning twins is a hoax. A bill exists now that is called “Feinstein’s bill.” This bill would sentence anyone who does human cloning to 10 years in prison and a 1 million dollar fine. The actor Kevin Kline is for stem cell research. He believes stem cell research has massive potentials. We used this article’s descriptions on how people can be penalized for cloning in the U.S.

19. “Transition Completes Acquisition of Stem Cell Therapeutics Inc.” Wednesday February 5, 2003 – 9:34 am ET. <biz.yahoo.com/prnews/030205/to287_1.html>

SCT provides therapies for strokes and Parkinson’s disease with stem cells (said as claimed). Prolactin stimulates the brain. SCT has some of its patients on Prolactin and says it helps to treat diabetes and stroke. The company says that they have made such prosperous discoveries because of their research groups. Information that is stated in the article is true up to the date it was printed and released to the public. Data stated in this article may be changed when SCT has succeeded at their statements and goals. We used this article’s descriptions on how stem cell therapies are being developed.

20. “N.J. Assembly Panel Approves Stem Cell Bill.” February 4, 2003 8:00 A.M. EST. <www.wnbc.com/news/1954271/detail.html>

A bill that allows stem cell research has caused arguementive controversy in Trenton, N.J. The majority that argued will this bill was religious and anti-abortion groups. An assembly committee finally approved the bill after four hours. They fancied how it would give a successful advantage to stem cell research, and that this bill will take cures to the next step. Con groups stated that this bill will allow cloning and such. “The bill must now go before a full assembly.” When this bill gets passed and then becomes a law The state of New Jersey will be claimed the second state to approve stem cell research. We used this article’s descriptions on how N.J. may become the first state to allow stem cell research.

21. Johnson, Jeff. “Congress Debates Bush Call for Ban on Human Cloning.” January 30, 2003. <www.cnsnews.com/ViewCulture.asp>

Congress had strong debates on if they should propose a bill that will ban all types of human cloning. This was Addressed by President Bush. Bush claims that life is a precious and that humanity does not need human cloning. Arlen Specter says that many have been taking the simple word cloning and have been manipulating it into different meanings. The major meaning is obviously human cloning. But Specter says that ‘cloning’ is a “misnomer.” He said it technically is a “nuclear transplant.” Many agree to take advantage of our knowledge to prevail cloning. The reason is because cloning helps grow tissue for human organs. Sam Brownback claims that “all cloning is reproductive.” We used this article’s descriptions on how words can be thought of differently then what they really mean.

22. Betterhumans Staff. “Diseased Brains Can Repair Themselves with Adult Stem Cells.” January 29, 2003. <www.betterhumans.com/News/news.aspx?articleID=2003-01-29-6>

New Zealand researchers claim that a diseased human brain contains adult stem cells that may help repair them. Only if they are “associated with neurodegenerative conditions.” The adult stem cells are said to replace damaged neurons that are damaged from the disease the brain carries (Alzheimer’s). The adult stem cells help heal and reestablish the brain from its disease over a period of time. Sometimes they might even cause the brain to go back to normal. The two major diseases this is aimed upon is Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. The scientists claim that there is a numerous amount of research to still be done to totally make this successful. We used this article’s descriptions on how adult stem cells can help the brain regain itself.

23. Tait, Victoria. “Actor Reeves Says Stem Cell Research Inevitable.” January 29, 2003 01:58 PM ET. <www.reuters.com/printerFriendlyPopup.jhtml?type=healthNews&storyID=2134321>

Reeves states that in the near future stem cell research limitations will be taken over by the states. Christopher Reeves says that he hopes that the Bush administration says opposed to stem cell research. Reeves says that since California has passed a law for therapeutic cloning, little by little states will follow “the lead of California.” Bush wants a law against human cloning. Reeves is for stem cell research but totally against cloning. He is holding research groups in Sydney and hopes to find a cure. Reeves say that cloning and stem cell research shouldn’t be confused together because they are two totally different things. We used this article’s descriptions on how actors can also help to make stem cells a success.

24. McKibben, Bill. “A Threat to our Coherent Human future.” Monday, January 6, 2003.<www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn/A15010-2003Jan5?language=printer>

Many find that what the Raelians claim is all a lie. The claims of cloning a baby are totally fake and unrealistic. Many scientists say that is they really did clone a baby, then it will have either minor or dramatic effects. Like disease or genetic defects. Many agree that cloning is a huge threat our future. Many say that the children Rael wanted to clone must have been damaged in some sort of way. Many called the Raelian announcement “appalling,” “irresponsible.” Lanza and West Research plan to only do stem cell research and not cloning. They plan to find a cures for Parkinson’s and other harmful and life threatening diseases. We used this article’s descriptions on how cloning is a threat to our future.

25. “Questions About Stem Cell Research and Cloning” <www.liferesource.net/stemcell.htm>

Human life is supposed to begin by an egg being fertilized. Stem cells can divide at certain times. Under the right environment, stem cells can turn into other cells in the human body. They can also turn into “mature cells” and also to perform specific functions that that cell performs. When stem cells are mature they can help repair certain damaged tissue in organs. Stem cells can also be found in umbilical cord blood and fat. Stem cell treat are still being experimented with. Many believe it isn’t bad to get stem cells from an embryo. Many scientists at clinic analyze the stem cells in a fetus to see if the stem cells are strong or weak. They then replace the weak ones and then transplant them into the woman’s womb. This helps to make more successful births. We used this article’s descriptions on how fat carries stem cells.

26. Eberle, Bruce. “Stem Cell Research.”  <www.lifeisprecious.org/unborn/stemcell.php>

Many don’t want to use discarded embryos for a cure. China harvests embryos for organs. A bill exists that helps pay clinics for the cost of human embryos. “The legislation will serve to increase the number of abortions in our country.” A majority of people think that abortion is a terrible thing. Umbilical cords contain stem cells, and there is an “abundant” amount of them…but no one uses them. Instead of abortion women should put their babies for adoption. Many should “protect human life.” In order to continue stem cell research, scientists should study its “unknowns.” There are web sites that gather supporters to put a ban onto stem cell research. We used this article’s descriptions on how other parts of the body should be used for extracting stem cells since more of them are in more abundant amounts.

27. “Stem Cell Research.” <www.cqnet.com.au/~user/dancasy/Bioethics_stemcellresearch_cloning.html>

Stem cells are cell tissue from embryos. Stem cells can make a limitless supply of cells for an organ. When stem cells are taken from their original place in an embryo, it causes the embryo to die. The NIH has stated that spare embryos are going to be used from clinics for research. Many people against embryonic research say that the umbilical cords can be used for research. Adult stem cells are better than embryonic stem cells when it comes to treating diseases. Scientist have discovered how to harvest stem cells from surgically removed fat from cosmetic surgeries. Umbilical cords contain more stem cells than embryos. We used this article’s descriptions on how more and more people believe in extracting stem cells from other parts of the human body.

28. Powell, Kendall. “Stem and cancer cells have something in common.” 30 December 2002. <www.nature.com/nsu/021230/021230-2.html>

A new study has shown that a certain protein can control the “proliferation of stem cells and cancer cells.” This study helps scientists learn about the two cells dividing abilities. There is some trepidations on the high risk this causes of “seeding cancers.” Scientist plan to “manipulate” stem cells so they can have lots for drugs and medicine. Many hope that stem cell therapy will exist in the near future because of its potentials to help damaged tissues in the body. In order to make all of these goals come true, scientist must learn how to control the proliferation from seeding cancers. Cancer cells steal stem cells ability to divide indefinitely, causing tumors to grow. We used this article’s descriptions on how stem cell therapies have a big potential for the future.
